SUMMARY:William Close and the Earth Harp Collective
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM JAN. 23\, 2016 \n William Close and the Earth Harp Collective recently pushed the boundaries of the “performance experience” when they finished third on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent.” The group received massive praise and admiration from fans and all three judges. William Close is an installation artist and musician who has developed over 100 new types of musical instruments. He is the inventor of the majestic stringed instrument\, The Earth Harp\, the world’s largest stringed instrument. Featuring the Earth Harp at the center of the group and many other signature instruments designed by Close\, William and the Earth Harp Collective is the latest adventure in the innovator’s already outstanding career.  \nWilliam’s work explores the connection between architecture and music.  Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote “architecture is frozen music\,” Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument. When the group decides to partner with two young American\nentrepreneurs to open Rwanda’s first ever ice cream shop\, these remarkable women embark on a journey of independence\, peace and possibility. DESCRIPTION:Hip-Hop is the largest youth culture in the history of the planet rock. It has produced generations of artists who have revolutionized their genre(s) by applying the aesthetic innovations of the culture. \nThe BreakBeat Poets features 78 poets\, born somewhere between 1961-1999\, All-City and Coast-to-Coast\, who are creating the next and now movement(s) in American letters. This is the first poetry anthology by and for the Hip-Hop generation. It is for people who love Hip-Hop\, for fans of the culture\, for people who’ve never read a poem\, for people who thought poems were only something done by dead white dudes who got lost in a forest\, and for poetry heads. This anthology is meant to expand the idea of who a poet is and what a poem is for. \nThe BreakBeat Poets are the scribes recording and remixing a fuller spectrum of experience of what it means to be alive in this moment. The BreakBeat Poets are a break with the past and an honoring of the tradition(s)\, an undeniable body expanding the canon for the fresher.

September. 23\, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. \nBruce Dorfman has had fifty-three solo exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. His work has been presented in numerous museum and university collections and gallery group exhibitions worldwide\, including currently “Ways and Means: A New Look at Process in Art”\, July 18 – October 7\, 2016 at UBS Art Gallery\, NYC; June Kelly Gallery\, NYC and “Making/Breaking Traditions: The Teachers of Ai Weiwei”\, Art Students League\, NYC (2014). \nDorfman is the recipient of many awards\, grants and fellowships including: New York State Council on the Arts; Fulbright Fellowship; Rockefeller Foundation; U.S. Department of State; New York World’s Fair Invitational; National Academy of Design; Butler Institute of American Art and a major grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work has been written about in The New York Times\, Art in America\, ARTnews and City Arts. \nBruce Dorfman has taught at the Art Students League of New York since 1964. Dorfman also taught at the New School\, Syracuse University\, the Everson Museum\, and was Artist-in-Residence at the Norton Museum\, Fla. From 1993 to 1996\, he was a guest-artist at museums\, and art institutions in Venezuela\, Portugal and France. \nBruce Dorfman studied at the Art Students League of New York. SUMMARY:Andy Statman
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University. \nHad there been a planetarium in 19th-century Galicia\, or a kosher deli in Depression-era Kentucky\, Andy Statman’s music might have been playing in the background. Meandering through time\, geography and\nculture in a few passionate\, organic gusts of music\, neither the man nor his inimitable hybrid sound has a very clearly defined “before” or “after.” Statman\, one of his generation’s premier mandolinists and clarinetists\, thinks of his compositions as “a spontaneous\, American-roots form of very personal\, prayerful Hasidic music\, by way of avant-garde jazz.” \nThis modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art\, and seems not to recognize that his music\, like his story\, is extraordinary. It’s a story Statman rewrites with his trio every time they perform: “We’re creating an experience between the audience and us.” Statman performs his distinctive\, unconstrained meditations on jazz\, klezmer\, bluegrass and the human soul with bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle. “At a certain point\, we’re just talking\, just having a threeway conversation.” This “conversation” changes each time they have it on stage\, no melody sounding quite the same as it did before\, and none bearing the definitive stamp of the genre that spawned it. A totally unselfconscious performer\, Statman does not mind that many audiences leave slightly befuddled as to what kind\nof music\, exactly\, they have just heard.

SUMMARY:Intro to Celtic Music Workshop with Switchback
DESCRIPTION:Attendees are presented with traditional pieces of Irish music\, folklore and dance. Following the historic time-line of Irish emigration to the United States\, participants are made aware of the evolution of Irish music\, once immigrants reached America. They will  listen to the transformation of Irish music into today’s western\, jazz and bluegrass. The resurgence of Irish music\, dance and culture are also examined.  \nBrian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack of Switchback have been playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana music at sold-out concert halls\, performing arts centers and festivals for over 20 years. Featuring a mix of Irish music and original songs\, their concerts have been described as “breathtaking scenery for your ears.” With a mix of mandolin\, guitar\, and bass their harmonies have won comparisons to the Louvin Brothers\, the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel.  \nHeld in conjunction with the concert featuring Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill with Switchback on April 22 at 8 PM in Pollak Theatre

DESCRIPTION:Following the hugely successful broadcasts of Coriolanus and King Lear\, National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses to cinemas – broadcast live from the Donmar’s London home. \nDirected by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus)\, the cast includes Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey)\, Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire). \nIn 1782\, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex\, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later\, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board\, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary. \nFormer lovers\, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. The latest\, Borealis En Salon\, is both lush and elegant. \nThe Monmouth Winds\, formed in 2009\, features five\nmusicians from the Garden State: Jenny Cline\, flute; Nicholas Gatto\, oboe;\nRichard Grossman\, clarinet; Richard Sachs\, horn; and Linda Balavram\, bassoon.\nThey have been steadily building a following\, delighting audiences in the\ntri-state area with their entertaining performances of eclectic\nrepertoire.  Lately they have been busy commissioning new works for their\nensemble\, including works by Jeffrey Scott\, Gary Schocker\, Daniel Dorff\, David\nEvan Thomas and Laurence Dresner.  They have performed at the 2013 (New\nOrleans) and 2015 (Washington\, D.C.) National Flute Association conventions\,\nand they will be premiering their next commission\, a work by Eric Ewazen\, at\nthe Juilliard School this fall.

His work is centered on the use of electronic technologies and electronic media to explore dynamic relationships between ideas and material. Lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings\, Juber is a world-class guitar virtuoso solo artist\, composer and arranger. Laurence Juber has released 18 critically acclaimed solo albums\, including Guitarist and PCH. His solo CD\, Pop Goes Guitar\, includes the arrangement of Stand By Me that was heard nationally in the ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ commercial. His last release\, Wooden Horses\, showcases LJ’s compositions for solo guitar\, and his latest CD is LJ Plays The Beatles Vol.2\, a follow-up to Vol 1 which is one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten acoustic albums. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated author Erik Larson will speak at Monmouth University on Monday\, March 28\, 2016\, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. \n \nErik Larson has written five books that have appeared on the New York Times‘ bestseller list\, including such critically acclaimed works as In the Garden of Beasts: Love\, Terror\, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin and The Devil in the White City. Mr. Larson’s most recent book is  Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania\, which deals with the implications of the sinking of the Lusitania by German torpedoes in May 1915 and will be the subject of his talk. \nThis event is the inaugural lecture in the Department of History and Anthropology’s Charles Mayes World War I Lecture Series. \nMr. Larson’s talk at Monmouth University will be his first public appearance since the release of Dead Wake in paperback. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has\nnow grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. \nThis year\, the show features a twist of rock music and country music. The rock music\nis courtesy of Eric Bazilian\, founding member of the rock band Hooters. Bazilian is also known internationally for his efforts as a Grammy nominated songwriter\, as well as being an arranger\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer. \nSinging-songwriting duo Williams Honor will bring a bit of the country to Woods Theatre. The duo have exploded in Asbury Park’s music scene\, and features producer and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Brown and performer powerhouse Reagan Richards. The two previously have worked and toured with many national acts before coming together to form the Jersey Shore’s first ever country duo. DESCRIPTION:Aphra Behn shares her experiences as a feminist activist and artist for almost 20 years as a member of Guerrilla Girls (1997-2001) and Guerrilla Girl On Tour! (2001 – present). Revealing the inside workings of the grassroots groups\, she discusses the successes (protests; fax blitzes; speak-outs and street theatre); the struggles (hate mail; death threats; backlash) and the downright defeats (sabotage; infighting). Act Like a Feminist Artist 
is a 60 to 90 minute interactive talk\, audience members will be challenged to rethink the concepts of what it means to be an “activist\,” “artist\,” and “feminist.” The talk is framed with readings from Aphra’s upcoming memoir\, “UN/MASKED\, My Secret Identity Revealed” (Skyhorse Publications\, October 2016.)
