SUMMARY:Reproductive Justice 2019: Perils and Prospects
DESCRIPTION:The personal is the political has been a part of the American vocabulary since at least the 1960s. Initially this argument was a source of identity and politics-making in the male public arena\, not the female domestic space. Recently\, this personal has been targeted in both Western Europe and North America where varying nationalist resurgences have resulted in anti-choice legislation. In response\, some American states have passed reproductive-specific protections through legislative acts of their own. Against the backdrop of culture war\, what does this renewed attention to female agency and their bodies say about our broken\, polarized present? What prospects lay ahead for women? And more importantly\, what perils? \nClick to Print Flyer\nOpening Remarks\nDr. Nancy Mezey – Dean of the Honors School \nModerator\nDr. Rekha Datta – Interim Provost \nHost and Organizer\nDr. L. Benjamin Rolsky \nPanelists\nAnne C. Deepak – Associate Professor of Social Work \nSasha N. Canan – Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education \nLazara G. Paz-Gonzalez – Adjunct Professor of Nursing and Health Studies \nSponsored By:\nThe Provost’s Office\, The School of Humanities & Social Science and the Department of History & Anthropology in conjunction with the Program in Gender and Intersectionality Studies\, The University Library\, The Leon Hess Business School\, The School of Education\, The School of Social Work\, and The Honors School.

SUMMARY:Uber Whistleblower and Time “Silence Breaker” Susan Fowler to Speak at Monmouth University
DESCRIPTION:The Leon Hess Business School Presents the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: \n“The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley”\nUber whistleblower Susan Fowler will give the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: “The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley” on Wednesday\, April 11\, at 3 p.m. in Pollak Theatre on the Monmouth University campus. \nSusan Fowler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in physics. Following jobs at two startup companies\, she was hired by Uber as a site reliability engineer. She resigned after one year and published a blogpost detailing the harassment and discrimination she had experienced as a result of rejecting her manager’s sexual advances. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigned and 20 employees were fired. Under Ariana Huffington’s supervision\, Uber’s Board of Directors hired former attorney general Eric Holder and his law firm\, which conducted an investigation and proposed sweeping changes. \nIn 2017\, Fowler was recognized as the Financial Times Person of the Year and one of Time magazine’s persons of the year: “The Silence Breakers.” Her Uber adventures are the subject of an upcoming movie. \nThis free event is open to the public. RSVPs are not required for the lecture. Questions may be directed to Trish LaMarca at plamarca@monmouth.edu or 732-571-3423.
