SUMMARY:La Bohème
DESCRIPTION:With its enchanting setting and spellbinding score\, the world’s most popular opera is as timeless as it is heartbreaking. Franco Zeffirelli’s picture-perfect production brings 19th century Paris to the Met stage as Puccini’s young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life. Soprano Juliana Grigoryan is the feeble seamstress Mimì\, opposite tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the ardent poet Rodolfo. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts the November 8 performance\, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to the Pollak Theatre.

SUMMARY:History of Motown Records
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: November 6\, 13\, & 20\, 2025 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nIn Detroit in the 1960’s Motown Records produced hits as efficiently as the Ford Motor Company produced automobiles. It was the “Sound of Young America” conceived by Berry Gordy J and sung by performers like The Supremes\, The Temptations\, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Using audio and visual content\, we’ll trace the amazing musical journey from the power soul of “Dancing in The Streets” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” to the psychedelic soul of “What’s Going On” and “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” to the pop soul of The Jackson 5. Timeless music that moved us then and moves us now. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:The Beatles' Rubber Soul
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: October 28\, 2025 | 7:30 – 9:30 PM \nAt the mid-point of the 1960’s and after Beatlemania had hit America and the world\, The Beatles released their sixth album. SUMMARY:La Sonnambula
DESCRIPTION:Following triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette\, Verdi’s La Traviata\, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor\, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina\, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production\, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina’s fiancé\, Elvino\, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival\, Lisa\, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works\, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to Pollak Theatre on October 18. \n\nDue to wet ground conditions\, there will be no parking on the Pollack/Great Lawnfield tomorrow. Please park in the soccer fields or identify yourself to the football parking assistants as performing art patrons\, and the fee will be waived. \nThank you\, and enjoy the show!

SUMMARY:Disco Inferno!\, Part I
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: September 11\, 16\, & 18\, 2025 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nDance music had existed since at least the 1930s\, but the beat took on a new meaning in the 1970s. The four-on-the-floor beat\, wah-wah guitar\, horns\, funky bass\, and soulful vocals invited people from various backgrounds onto the floor.  The craze may have ended by 1980\, but the music never died; instead\, the genre transformed into other genres such as House and Electronic Dance Music (EDM).  Disco Inferno\, a two-part course\, will explore the history of disco\, from its origins through its heyday and beyond. \n\n\nPart one looks at the roots of disco\, from James Brown’s extended breaks to Philadelphia International’s groundbreaking\, lush productions.  New York and Africa played key roles in the development of disco\, as did a perfect storm of social and political issues: women’s rights\, gay rights\, civil rights\, the aftermath of Vietnam and Watergate\, and much more.  Students will learn about the rise of disco\, its characteristics\, and the key artists of its early years.  No prior knowledge of the Hustle is required! \n\nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Salome
DESCRIPTION:Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy\, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth\, one of Europe’s leading opera directors\, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive\, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine\, who demands the head of Jochanaan\, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather\, King Herod\, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife\, Herodias\, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series\, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

SUMMARY:Pysanky: Learn the Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Tuesday\, April 15 | 6 – 8:30 PM\n\n\nCome celebrate the spring at Monmouth University with this unique opportunity to learn the seasonal ancient art known as Pysanky. Pysanky\, also known as Ukrainian eggs\, is an ancient folk tradition that has been passed down for thousands of years. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come. This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky\, a demonstration\, and independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs\, dyes\, and tools. Participants will turn real eggs into works of art using a wax resist method similar to batik. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg\, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off. In-person attendance will be extremely limited.\n\nNo prerequisite skills are required. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. Ages 18+

SUMMARY:Producing the Beatles
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – March 6 & 13 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nBased on his acclaimed podcast\, Producing the Beatles\, Jason Kruppa explores the music of the Fab Four from the perspective of the one person whose point of view has never been properly and thoroughly examined: their producer\, George Martin. Using innovative techniques to break down their recordings\, we’ll discover how the Beatles went from learning their way around the studio to becoming masters of the art of recording\, with their producer working side by side with them each step of the way. And finally\, with re-recordings and detailed recreations of Martin’s orchestral scores that allow us to hear individual instrument parts\,\, we’ll learn how his arrangements enhanced and shaped the Beatles’ music. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.
