Quantifying the 77- year-old’s significance is impossible\, but people try anyway. A 2017 Grammy win for TajMo\, Taj’s collaboration with Keb’ Mo’\, brought his Grammy tally to three wins and 14 nominations\, and underscored his undiminished relevance more than 50 years after his solo debut. DESCRIPTION:In this interactive\, multimedia talk\, Kenneth Womack traces the story behind John Lennon’s remarkable 1980 comeback album with wife Yoko Ono. In this virtual event\, Womack explores the powerful\, life-affirming story of the former Beatle’s renaissance after five years of self-imposed retirement. Lennon’s final pivotal year would climax in several moments of creative triumph as he rediscovered his artistic self in dramatic fashion. Womack’s presentation is drawn from his forthcoming book John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life.  \nKenneth Womack is one of the world’s foremost writers and thinkers about the Beatles. In addition to such titles as Long and Winding Roads: The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles (2007) and The Beatles Encyclopedia: Everything Fab Four (2014)\, he is the author of a two-volume biography of the life and work of Beatles producer George Martin\, including Maximum Volume (2017) and Sound Pictures (2018). DESCRIPTION:This semester\, Blue Hawk Records will be hosting their first ever virtual release show on the Blue Hawk Records Instagram page for their new album Sweet 16 on May 6 at 8pm.  \nOver the past few weeks\, student life at Monmouth University\, and everywhere\, has changed dramatically\, due to COVID – 19. Like all other schools and universities across the country\, Monmouth has moved to online instruction for the remainder of the spring semester. However\, despite the chaotic and tumultuous situation students found themselves\, Blue Hawk Records carried on with its plans to release its 16th studio album. They innovated and found a way to remotely produce\, promote and release the spring 2020 compilation EP\, “Sweet 16”. A first for the student-run record label\, as well as most major record labels. \nArtists on “Sweet 16” include Monmouth students\, Shadiyah\, featuring Gabriel Garza\, Nicole Totland\, Bruce Davis\, featuring Janae\, Mikey Sanchez\, Drew Fournier\, and Monmouth alumni\, Anya Schildge Angeloni ‘12M\, along with an ensemble of accompanying student musicians and producers. \nSweet 16 will be available for streaming on all digital platforms on May 8. \nYou can find and follow Blue Hawk Records at @bluehawkrecordsofficial

Originally based in Montana\, their award-winning original music and unique interpretations of American and Brazilian standards have taken them all the way to New York City’s Lincoln Center\, DC’s Kennedy Center\, NPR Mountain Stage\, Sundance Film Fest and Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival. Praised for her “impeccable vocal command” (PopMatters) and compared to a gamut of singers from Astrud Gilberto to Billie Holiday\, Glass’s voice is ultimately “one of a kind…you cannot confuse her with another artist” (New York Theatre Guide). DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guest artists Tom Chapin and Jen Chapin with an intro set by George Wurzbach. The show will also feature Monmouth University student openers. \nIn a career that spans six decades\, 26 albums and three GRAMMY awards\, Hudson Valley Troubadour Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concert performer\, Chapin has acted on Broadway\, as well as working extensively in television\, radio and film. As a music-maker\, the multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has maintained two long and productive parallel careers\, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children’s music. Chapin has established a reputation for insightful\, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances. Chapin’s infectious songs\, sterling musicianship and personal warmth consistently shine through\, whether he’s performing on record or in a concert hall\, an outdoor festival\, a school\, in front of a symphony orchestra or in an intimate coffeehouse. The New York Times called Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” \nJen Chapin has been celebrated for writing “brilliant soulfully poetic urban folk music” (NPR) for almost two decades\, beginning with her debut\, Open Wide\, in 2002. Nurtured in and around NYC by a large family of artists\, writers\, and musicians\, Jen’s “observant\, lyrically deft\, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) songwriting features both her “extraordinary voice” (De krenten uit de pop\, The Netherlands) and “astonishing jazz band” (popmatters). As much as an artistic legacy\, the roots of Jen’s upbringing have inspired her “potent\, jazzy\, layered folk” (Newsday) songs and a lifetime of passionate activism\, through ongoing work with WhyHunger (founded by her late father Harry Chapin)\, and teaching high school global history in Brooklyn. She has performed on stage with Bruce Springsteen\, on bills with Aimee Mann\, Bruce Hornsby\, and The Neville Brothers\, and her rendition of Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” was featured in an episode of the SyFy TV series “Defiance”. Jen Chapin’s 2013 release Reckoning\, produced and engineered by five-time GRAMMY© Winner Kevin Killen (U2\, Elvis Costello\, Kate Bush) was named among the best Americana albums of that year by Examiner.com and awarded First Prize\, Lyrics category by the USA Songwriting Competition (for the song “Go Away”). DESCRIPTION:One of Broadway’s most classic and beloved tales\, 42nd Street\, comes cinema screens in the largest-ever production of the breathtaking musical.  The musical\, set in 1933\, tells the story of Peggy Sawyer\, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway. \nPeggy arrives to New York City from her hometown of Allentown\, Pennsylvania and her talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh. She gets a spot in the chorus of the musical-within-the-musical\, Pretty Lady. Dorothy Brock\, the classic Broadway diva and star of the show\, takes a dislike to the new girl. When Dorothy is injured\, Pretty Lady looks like it will have to close\, unless a new girl talented enough to lead the show can be found — someone like Peggy Sawyer!) \nFilmed in 2018 at London’s Theatre Royal the production is directed by the original author of the show\, Mark Bramble. This eye-watering extravaganza is full of crowd-pleasing tap dances\, popular musical theatre standards (“Lullaby of Broadway”\, “We’re in the Money (the gold digger’s song)\, “42nd Street” and more)\, and show-stopping ensemble production numbers.

DESCRIPTION:Presenting the 25th Anniversary concerts of On A Winter’s Night from veteran singer-songwriters Christine Lavin\, John Gorka\, Patty Larkin\, Cheryl Wheeler and Cliff Eberhardt. These are among the brightest stars of the singer/songwriter movement for the past three decades. \nIn 1994 Christine Lavin gathered them together\, along with folk and Americana artists to showcase music of the Winter Season on the now classic On A Winter’s Night CD\, followed by several years of touring collaborations. These artists have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their touring days together. Now in 2019-2020\, the winter season is again celebrated by these unique and popular performers\, back together by popular demand.

SUMMARY:William Close and the Earth Harp Collective
DESCRIPTION:Concurrently primitive and futuristic\, The Earth Harp incorporates sculpting\, architecture and sound design\, standing at the crossroads of music and art. The Earth Harp was built and developed by William Close\, a New York native and alumni at the Art Institute of Chicago. William performs as part of The Earth Harp Collective – a team of musicians\, dancers\, aerialists and artists. \nWhile studying at the Institute\, Close realized in order to succeed he had to do something that no one else had done. An avid musician who played in garage bands as a teenager\, he started concocting then building his own instruments. His background as a sailor served as inspiration for the use of natural sounds – the wind whipping the sails\, the sound of the rigs flapping and being pulled tight. \n“I’ve always seen and heard the world as an instrument\,” says Close. “Just hearing nature’s tones inspires me.” \nThe body of The Earth Harp rests on the stage\, while the strings travel over the audience\, attaching to the back of the theatre\, concert hall and/or festival ground\, turning every space into an instrument. By using violin rosin covered gloves along the strings\, the Earth Harp’s bowed tones and overlapping ripple effect offers a dramatic cathedral-like sound effect. \nClose’s celebrated Earth Harp earned him a finalist slot on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and was recently named by the World Record Academy as creating and holding the record for the world’s largest stringed instrument. He has brought his Earth Harp to iconic venues like Rome’s Coliseum\, Washington\, DC’s Kennedy Center\, New York’s Lincoln Center\, Seattle’s Space Needle\, Shanghai’s Grand Theater\, Sao Paulo’s Theatro Muncipal\, Qatar’s Dhow Harbour\, as well as major U.S. festivals like Lollapalooza\, Coachella\, Bumbershoot\, Burning Man and Lighting in a Bottle. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guest artists Jeffrey Gaines and ERYN with an intro set by Mark Geary. The show will also feature Monmouth University student openers: Max Adolf and Kelli Misenheimer. \nThroughout his two-and-a-half-decade recording career\, Jeffrey Gaines has maintained an impressive standard for soul-searching\, introspective lyrics and catchy\, uplifting melodies. Since bursting on the scene with his self-titled 1992 debut album\, the charismatic singer-songwriter-guitarist has built a beloved body of recordings that’s won him a large and deeply devoted international fan base. Now\, after an extended absence from the recording studio\, Gaines returns with Alright\, his first Omnivore Recordings release and his first set of new studio material since 2003’s Toward the Sun. Street date is January 26\, 2018. DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years\, The Matt O’Ree Band has done what most area bands do. They’ve played their shows\, developed their sound\, released their records and very quietly built a massive fan base in the process. \nWhat makes this band different from all the others is that their local fan base includes Bruce Springsteen\, David Bryan and Steve Cropper\, all of whom have volunteered to perform on the band’s latest album\, “Brotherhood”. \nPrior to Brotherhood’s release\, Matt’s talent was recognized globally when he got the nod to join rock legends Bon Jovi as their guitarist/backing vocalist on their 2015 stadium tour of the Far East. \nIn addition to being a creative songwriter\, Matt was recognized by the industry as a guitar great after winning a national guitar contest hosted by BB King and John Mayer through Guitar Center and Guitar World Magazine. DESCRIPTION:Known for their harmony-laced take on alt-folk\, The Hunts are a Chesapeake\, Virginia-based band of seven siblings who’ve been playing music together almost their entire lives. Twin sisters Jessi and Jenni and five brothers Josh\, Jonathan\, Jordan\, Justin\, and Jamison\, now ranging in age from 26 down to 17\, learned to sing and play violin as young kids and spent much of their childhood performing in their community. After widening their following and playing at theaters\, festivals and universities around the country—and teaching themselves to play instruments like mandolin\, piano\, ukulele\, banjo\, and drums — The Hunts started experimenting with songwriting and soon brought to life a batch of songs that reveal their sophisticated sense of melody and undeniably dreamy innocence. \nInspired by shared memories\, The Hunts have created songs that capture heartache and wonder with a wide-eyed but wistful elegance. The Hunts hold true to a songwriting process that taps into each member’s unique strengths but remains intensely collaborative. That unified approach infuses their music with an irresistible richness of spirit. Their songs are artfully arranged yet instilled with a graceful simplicity. While getting seven strong-minded brothers and sisters to agree on every last note and lyric can sometimes be chaotic\, The Hunts note that the synergy born from that chaos is what makes the band so strong.

DESCRIPTION:Massenet’s enchanting opera Cendrillon\, based on Cinderella\, premieres at the Met conducted by Bertrand de Billy and directed by Laurent Pelly\, whose Met credits include staging Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment and Massenet’s Manon. Joyce DiDonato adds another role to her Met repertory as the title character\, a role she has sung to acclaim at the Grand Teatre del Liceu\, Santa Fe Opera\, and Royal Opera\, Covent Garden. The cast also stars Alice Coote as Prince Charmant\, Stephanie Blythe as the evil stepmother Madame de la Haltière\, Kathleen Kim as the Fée\, and Laurent Naouri as Pandolfe. Cendrillon is produced in association with the Royal Opera House\, Covent Garden\, London; Gran Teatre del Liceu\, Barcelona; Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie\, Brussels; and Opéra de Lille.
