SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Weili Shi
DESCRIPTION:Weili Shi is an artist who designs through the media of digital technologies. He creates unconventional experiences with the aim of provoking people’s consciousness. In his most recent work\, Shan Shui in the World\, he transformed the information of the buildings in Manhattan\, NY\, into traditional Chinese shan shui (landscape) paintings by a custom algorithm. This project revisits the ideas implicit in Chinese literati paintings of shan shui: the relationship between urban life and people’s yearning for nature\, and between social responsibility and spiritual purity. With generative technology\, Shan Shui in the World has the ability to represent any place in the world—including the city where the audience is—in the form of a shan shui painting. DESCRIPTION:Alena Graedon’s first novel\, The Word Exchange\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and Paperback Row pick\, and selected as a best novel of 2014 by Kirkus. It has been translated into eight languages. She has twice been a MacDowell Colony Fellow\n(2012 and 2017)\, and has also received fellowships at Yaddo\, Ucross\, The Virginia Center for the Arts\, The Vermont Studio Center\, and Jentel. Her nonfiction has been published in The New York Times Book Review\, newyorker.com\, The Believer magazine\, Guernica\, and Post Road among other publications. A native of Durham\, NC\, Graedon is a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s MFA program\, and she is an Assistant Professor of English at Monmouth University. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.

The opening panel will feature Geoffrey Anderson\, the CEO of Smart Growth America\, a leading national organization on land use headquartered in Washington\, D.C.\, and Dr. Lisa Sturtevant\, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Urban Land Institute Terwilliger Center for Housing in Washington\, D.C. \nDr. James W. Hughes\, the Dean of the Bloustein School of Planning at Rutgers University and Timothy Evans\, Research Director at New Jersey Future\, will discuss their research on the demographic shifts in New Jersey that are impacting the housing and economic activity in the suburbs. \nJosh Burd\, the Editor of Real Estate-NJ\, will moderate a panel of developers currently working on redevelopment of the suburbs including Ralph Zucker of Somerset Development who is creating the Bell Works reuse of the Bell labs facility in Holmdel\, New Jersey\, Carl Goldberg from Mack-Cali Roseland\, developers of many large suburban campuses\, Jenny Bernell from Kushner Companies\, owner of the Monmouth Mall and other properties\, and David Fisher\, from K. Hovnanian Companies\, who are redeveloping several large office campuses. \nThe final panel will include local officials who will provide their response to the earlier panels and discuss activity in their suburban municipalities. SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald.  \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: Liz Moore
DESCRIPTION:Liz Moore is a writer of fiction and creative nonfiction.
Her first novel\, The Words of Every Song (Broadway Books\, 2007)\, centers on a fictional record company in New York City just after the turn of the millennium. It draws partly on Liz’s own experiences as a musician. It was selected for Borders’ Original Voices program and was given a starred review by Kirkus.Roddy Doyle wrote of it\, “This is a remarkable novel\, elegant\, wise\, and beautifully constructed. I loved the book.”

After the publication of her debut novel\, Liz obtained her MFA in Fiction from Hunter College. In 2009\, she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania’s ArtsEdge residency and moved to Philadelphia\, where she still lives. She is now an Assistant Professor of Writing at Holy Family University.

Her second novel\, Heft\, was published by W.W. Norton in January 2012 to popular and critical acclaim. Of Heft\, The New Yorker wrote\, “Moore’s characters are lovingly drawn…a truly original voice”; The San Francisco Chronicle wrote\, “Few novelists of recent memory have put our bleak isolation into words as clearly as Liz Moore does in her new novel”; and editor Sara Nelson wrote in O\, The Oprah Magazine\, “Beautiful…Stunningly sad and heroically hopeful.” The novel was published in five countries\, was long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, and was included on several “Best of 2012” lists\, including those of NPR and the Apple iBookstore.

Moore’s short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in venues such as Tin House\, The New York Times\, and Narrative Magazine. She is the winner of the Medici Book Club Prize and Philadelphia’s Athenaeum Literary Award. After winning a 2014 Rome Prize in Literature\, she spent 2014-15 at the American Academy in Rome\, completing her third novel. \nThat novel\, The Unseen World\, is forthcoming from W.W. Norton. in July 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Feb. 2\, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in  Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Friday\, Feb. 2\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nDrones are in the news. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. In 2010 she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail\, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial (2010)\, where she exhibited work from her project\, Memories of Development. In 2015 she was awarded a Fulbright grant and a Jerome Foundation Grant to produce “The Perilous Journey of Maria Palacios”\, a performance based film that will premier in 2016 at the Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador. Artist in Residence programs she has participated in include: Office Hours\, at El museo del barrio\, NY\, NY; LMCC Workspace\, NY\, NY; MacDowell Residency\, NH; Smackmellon\, Brooklyn\, NY and others. Skvirsky is an Associate Professor at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA and an MFA faculty member at the The New School\, Parsons School of Design\, NY\, NY. DESCRIPTION:For its fourth annual Ink & Electricity event\, Monmouth will host the lecture “Up from Middlebrow” by Jonathan Rose\, a William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of History from Drew University. Taking the title of his talk from Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery\, Rose will survey the recent historiography of American middlebrow literature—from nineteenth-century black Shakespeare clubs to Oprah. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: Gerald Stern
DESCRIPTION:Gerald Stern was born in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania in 1925 and was educated at the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University.  He is the author of 16 books of poetry\, including\, most recently\, Divine Nothingness (Norton\, 2014) and In Beauty Bright (Norton\, 2012)\, as well as This Time:  New and Selected Poems\, which won the 1998 National Book Award and a kind-of memoir of a year in 85 sections titled Stealing History\, was published by Trinity University Press in the spring of 2012.  Stern was awarded the 2005 Wallace Stevens Award by the Academy of American Poets\, was the 2010 recipient of the Medal of Honor in Poetry by the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, he was inducted into the 2012 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the 2012 recipient of the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress.  He was the 2014 winner of the Frost Medal. Stern has two books coming out in 2017\, a poetry collection from W. W. Norton called Galaxy Love and a book of non-fiction titled Deathwatch\, to be released by Trinity University Press.

SUMMARY:Jerry Zolten: We Were What We Laughed At! An American Cultural History through the Art of Stand-Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Jerry Zolten\, educator\, author\, musician\, roots music historian and producer\, also counts among his credits a stint as a stand-up comic. He will give a presentation on the history of stand up comedy that is richly illustrated with rare video performance clips. The talk will explore comedy as it relates to issues including ethnic stereotyping\, freedom of speech\, social injustice\, and race and gender disparity. \nMotivated by his love of comedy and the power of the best comedians to shake up thinking on a range of significant social issues\, Zolten dug into the history of American stand-up and over the years interviewed and published profiles of luminaries including Carl Reiner\, Steve Allen\, Dick Gregory\, George Carlin\, and Woody Allen\, to name a few. \nHis collaborations on roots music projects with noted satirists Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar have led to guest appearances on public radio’s American Routes and as a featured speaker at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame. \nHe is the author of Great God A’Mighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds: Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music (Oxford University Press)\, co-editor of Bruce Springsteen\, Cultural Studies\, and the Runaway American Dream (Ashgate)\, and contributor to The Cambridge Companion to the Beatles (Cambridge University Press). \nZolten contributed to two 2015 Grammy-Winning projects\, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records\, Volumes 1 & 2 (Revenant/Third Man) and The Fairfield Four’s Still Rockin’ My Soul!. \nHis most recent work includes an article on the centennial of the iconic Martin Dreadnought Guitar for the C.F. Martin Guitar Company’s Martin Journal of the Acoustic Guitar along with a featured on-screen appearance in the documentary film “The Ballad of the Dreadnought” produced by C.F. Martin & Co.

DESCRIPTION:Hip-Hop is the largest youth culture in the history of the planet rock. It has produced generations of artists who have revolutionized their genre(s) by applying the aesthetic innovations of the culture. \nThe BreakBeat Poets features 78 poets\, born somewhere between 1961-1999\, All-City and Coast-to-Coast\, who are creating the next and now movement(s) in American letters. This is the first poetry anthology by and for the Hip-Hop generation. It is for people who love Hip-Hop\, for fans of the culture\, for people who’ve never read a poem\, for people who thought poems were only something done by dead white dudes who got lost in a forest\, and for poetry heads. This anthology is meant to expand the idea of who a poet is and what a poem is for. \nThe BreakBeat Poets are the scribes recording and remixing a fuller spectrum of experience of what it means to be alive in this moment. The BreakBeat Poets are a break with the past and an honoring of the tradition(s)\, an undeniable body expanding the canon for the fresher.

DESCRIPTION:Help is here!! Janice Wolfe is an internationally known behaviorist who specializes in rehabilitating fearful dogs. She has rehabilitated more than 25\,000 dogs as well as written and co-authored many books on animal behavior. \nJanice has so kindly offered to provide a seminar to teach us all how to help\, work with\, and ultimately understand how fearful dogs think! Shelters and rescue groups will always have frightened\, scared dogs – that’s a given. The recent Howell dog hording case of close to 300 dogs\, and a more recent case in Jackson where 17 large dogs were living in horrible conditions\, made us realize dogs from circumstances such as these need professional help. We reached out to Janice so we could all learn how to help them together. Rooted in the Expanded Cinema tradition\, his work explores the relationship between composition\, interface\, performance\, score\, and synesthetic audiovisual systems. \nEric Barry Drasin’s website \nPhillip David Stearns is also based in Brooklyn. His work is centered on the use of electronic technologies and electronic media to explore dynamic relationships between ideas and material. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated author Erik Larson will speak at Monmouth University on Monday\, March 28\, 2016\, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. \n \nErik Larson has written five books that have appeared on the New York Times‘ bestseller list\, including such critically acclaimed works as In the Garden of Beasts: Love\, Terror\, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin and The Devil in the White City. Mr. Larson’s most recent book is  Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania\, which deals with the implications of the sinking of the Lusitania by German torpedoes in May 1915 and will be the subject of his talk. \nThis event is the inaugural lecture in the Department of History and Anthropology’s Charles Mayes World War I Lecture Series. \nMr. Larson’s talk at Monmouth University will be his first public appearance since the release of Dead Wake in paperback. DESCRIPTION:Jane Hirshfield’s poetry speaks to the central issues of human existence—desire and loss\, impermanence and beauty\, the many dimensions of our connection with others and the wider community of creatures and objects with which we share our lives. Demonstrating with quiet authority what it means to awaken into the full capacities of attention\, her work sets forth a hard-won affirmation of our human fate. Described by The New York Times as “radiant and passionate” and by other reviewers as “ethically aware\,” “insightful and eloquent\,” and as conveying “succinct wisdom\,” her subjects range from the metaphysical and passionate to the political\, ecological\, and scientific to subtle unfoldings of daily life and experience. Her book of essays on the “mind of poetry” and her several collections presenting and co-translating the work of poets from the past have become classics in their fields. SUMMARY:GUERRILLA GIRLS ON TOUR: Act Like A Feminist Artist
DESCRIPTION:Aphra Behn shares her experiences as a feminist activist and artist for almost 20 years as a member of Guerrilla Girls (1997-2001) and Guerrilla Girl On Tour! (2001 – present). Revealing the inside workings of the grassroots groups\, she discusses the successes (protests; fax blitzes; speak-outs and street theatre); the struggles (hate mail; death threats; backlash) and the downright defeats (sabotage; infighting). Act Like a Feminist Artist 
is a 60 to 90 minute interactive talk\, audience members will be challenged to rethink the concepts of what it means to be an “activist\,” “artist\,” and “feminist.” The talk is framed with readings from Aphra’s upcoming memoir\, “UN/MASKED\, My Secret Identity Revealed” (Skyhorse Publications\, October 2016.) A lively Q and A will follow the talk.

DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University presents a talk “The Fifth Beatle: The Untold Story of the Jew Who Made the Beatles” by Vivek J. Tiwary the #1 New York Times bestselling author\, a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer\, and the founder of multi-platform arts and entertainment company Tiwary Entertainment Group. \nVivek’s graphic novel The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story\, based on the untold life story of Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein\, received worldwide critical acclaim and won a number of prestigious literary awards including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Reality-Based Work and two Harvey Awards including Best Original Graphic Novel. It is a Lambda Literary Finalist for Best LGBT Graphic Novel\, an American Library Association Great Graphic Novel for Teens\, and has been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives Permanent Collection. They include such groundbreaking work as Green Day’s “American Idiot\,” “A Raisin In The Sun\,” and Mel Brooks’ “The Producers”. SUMMARY:ART NOW: Coco Fusco- Observations of Predation in Humans\, A Lecture by Dr. Zira\, Animal Psychologist
DESCRIPTION:The Chimp psychologist from Plant of the Apes is back! Zira travelled back in time to visit us 20 years ago and narrowly escaped death at the hands of the paranoid humans who could not tolerate the idea of other primates as equals. After living in seclusion for 20 years and conducting ethological studies of our species from her hideout\, she has emerged in order to share her findings relating to aggressive behavior in members of the home genus. Her lecture is introduced by esteemed posthuman cultural theorist Donna Haraway and is followed by a question and answer session with human audience members. Dr. Zira draws on the cutting edge research in the fields of neuroscience\, primatology and evolutionary biology to interpret the predatory activities of human beings in postindustrial societies around the world. \nCoco Fusco is an interdisciplinary artist and writer and MIT’s MLK Visiting Scholar for 2014-2015. She is a recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship\, a 2013 Fulbright Fellowship\, and a 2012 US Artists Fellowship among other prestigious awards\, and her performances and videos have been presented in two Whitney Biennials\, BAM’s Next Wave Festival\, as well as numerous international Biennials and festivals.  Her works have appeared at the Tate Liverpool\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. 

Fusco is the author of English is Broken Here: Notes on Cultural Fusion in the Americas (1995) and The Bodies that Were Not Ours and Other Writings (2001)\, and A Field Guide for Female Interrogators (2008). She is also the editor of Corpus Delecti: Performance Art of the Americas (1999) and Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self (2003). She is currently working on a new book entitled Dangerous Moves: Performance and Politics in Cuba. 

Fusco’s work combines electronic media and performance in a variety of formats\, from staged multi-media performances incorporating large scale projections and closed circuit television to live performances streamed to the internet that invite audiences to chart the course of action through chat interaction. 

Fusco received her B.A. in Semiotics from Brown University\, her M.A. in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University\, and her Ph.D. in Art and Visual Culture from Middlesex University. \nMore information on Coco Fusco here

SUMMARY:Visiting Writer: Ed Hirsch
DESCRIPTION:Edward Hirsch\, a MacArthur Fellow\, has published nine books of poems\, including The Living Fire: New and Selected Poems (2010)\, which brings together thirty-five years of work\, and Gabriel: A Poem (2014)\, a book-length elegy that The New Yorker called “a masterpiece of sorrow.”  He has also written five prose books\, among them A Poet’s Glossary (2014)\, a complete compendium of poetic terms\, and How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry (1999)\, a national bestseller.  He has received numerous awards and fellowships\, including the National Book Critics Circle Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature.  He taught in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston for seventeen years.  He now serves as president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. \nMore information: www.edwardhirsch.com
