Bleu’s research\, documentation and musical illustrations stand alone in presenting the most comprehensive and at times unheard viewpoints and topics about this remarkable musician. Learn why almost 50 years after his death the iconic Jimi Hendrix is still incredibly relevant and named “The Greatest Guitarist of All Time”! \nLeonard J. SUMMARY:From Rock and Roll to Recovery and Everything In Between with Ricky Byrd
DESCRIPTION:Ricky Byrd is first and foremost – a man living in long term recovery. He also happens to be part of rock ‘n roll royalty. He is a well-recognized musician who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the lead guitarist and former original member of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Ricky played with Joan from 1981-1992\, and has also recorded or toured with Roger Daltrey\, Ian Hunter\, Southside Johnny and many other talented musicians since that time. \nRicky most recently has been combining his love for music with his passion and mission to help carry the torch of change surrounding the stigma of drug and alcohol use. He hopes to break down the barriers and spread the message of hope\, education\, awareness and addiction resources to his audiences. Using the healing powers of music as a touchstone\, Ricky likes to motivate those early in recovery or still struggling\, along with their family members. Whether it’s through his various speaking appearances\, concert events\, music outreach sessions\, small recovery music groups\, or prevention programs\, Ricky is dedicated to inspiring change. \nAs a songwriter\, who now often focuses on recovery lyrics\, Ricky moves people to laugh\, cry and think. He’s played his songs in the most intimate of rooms as well as to hundreds of thousands all over the world. He recognizes the power of the word and the music and often combines both into a message of hope and encouragement for sobriety. \nRicky can contribute to an event by sharing famous rock ‘n roll stories in a keynote address or by performing recovery music from his latest CD\, Clean Getaway. There is also a special place in his heart for smaller group settings where he can play acoustic guitar and clearly see the faces\, tears\, smiles and struggles up close. Ricky feels that music therapy and the open discussion that follows can lead broken souls to find that little bit of happiness – and encouragement they need to move forward. \nHe presents on the benefits of a sober lifestyle and likes talking to youth\, who are at that age\, where pressures and experimenting can often lead them down a crooked and deadly path. Ricky takes pride in also educating those individuals  in our communities that are somehow unaware and uninformed of the deadly drug and alcohol pandemic we are facing in this country. \nIn 2017\, Ricky received the Drug Free Heroes Award\, presented by Foundation For a Drug free World. As a result\, both Congress and the Supreme Court have attempted to place limits on the influence of the White House. Over 40 years later\, President Donald Trump is testing the limits of presidential power more than any president since Nixon. \nJohn W. Dean\, Nixon’s White House lawyer whose actions ultimately led to the former president’s impeachment and resignation\, and now a noted author and CNN contributor\, along with renowned presidential historian\, attorney\, and author\, James D. DESCRIPTION:Chris Clavio is an Electronic Artist and Entrepreneur living and working in Santa Fe\, NM. His work explores the sublime and perception using light\, sound\, and interactive environments. Currently he is the Director of IT and Electrical Infrastructure Systems for the artist collective Meow Wolf. \nClavio has shown work across the United States\, most recently in Pittsburgh\, PA\, with Energy Flow\, a project in collaboration with Andrea Polli that highlights the Rachel Carson bridge with wind-turbine powered LEDs. SUMMARY:Eleanor Hooker & Clodagh Beresford Dunne
DESCRIPTION:Two Irish poets\, Eleanor Hooker and Clodagh Beresford Dunne will read from their works. Eleanor Hooker is a poet and writer. In 2013\, her debut collection of poetry\, The Shadow Owner’s Companion was shortlisted for the Strong/Shine Award for Best First Irish Collection. In 2016\, she published her second collection of poems A Tug of Blue and she was included as one of Poetry Ireland Review’s ‘Rising Generation’ of Irish poets. In February 2016\, her flash fiction The Lesson was awarded 1st Prize in the Bare Fiction Flash Fiction competition in the UK. Her poetry has been published in literary journals internationally including: POETRY (Chicago)\, PN Review\, Poetry Ireland Review\, AGENDA Poetry\, The Stinging Fly\, The SHOp\, The Moth\, The Irish Times\, The Irish Examiner\, Crannóg\, POEM: International English Language Quarterly and Cyphers. \nClodagh Beresford Dunne was the recipient of the Arts Council of Ireland Emerging-Writer Award Bursary\, 2016. Her poems have appeared in Irish and international print and online journals\, including Poetry Ireland Review\, The Irish Times\, The Stinging Fly\, Southword\, The Moth\, The Pickled Body\, Spontaneity and Pittsburgh Poetry Review. She is the recipient of a number of literature awards from Irish Artlinks\, Waterford City and County Arts Office. Born and raised in a regional newspaper family\, her writing was first committed to print at age 8. SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING & FACULTY	LED DISCUSSION: REBIRTH OF A NATION BY PAUL D. MILLER AKA DJ SPOOKY
DESCRIPTION:To create his film Rebirth of a Nation\, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky\, remixed D.W. Griffith’s 1915 epic film The Birth of a Nation. His re-telling of this overtly racist story depicted in the Reconstruction-era United States hurtles Griffith’s images into the 21st century. The original film was based on a novel and theater play by Thomas Dixon entitled. By applying DJ technique to cinema\, Miller’s new film parallels\, deconstructs and remixes the original. He likes to think of it as “film as found object” in the same sense that artists such as Marcel Duchamp\, Jeff Koons\, Andy Warhol and David Hammons\, among many others\, have fostered creative investigations into the idea of found objects\, cinema and “appropriation art.” \nThe event will feature a discussion led by Monmouth faculty from a variety of disciplines. Including: Johanna Foster (Sociology)\, Walter Greason (History)\, Mark Ludak (Photography) and Brook Nappi (Anthropology). The first half of the film will screen starting at 4:30 p.m. Faculty will lead a discussion in the middle of the event\, and the second half of the film will follow until 6:45 p.m. \nPaul D. Miller\, aka DJ Spooky\, is an established composer\, multimedia artist\, and author. He travels around the world performing solo\, with chamber groups\, and with orchestras\, while giving talks at prominent universities\, museums\, and conferences. His DJ Mixer app has seen more than 12 million downloads and in 2012- 2013 he was the first artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He is also the executive editor of ORIGIN Magazine. He’s produced and composed work for Yoko Ono\, Thurston Moore\, and scores of artists and award-winning films. Miller’s work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne\, Germany; Kunsthalle\, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; and many other museums and galleries. He has been featured everywhere from CNN to SyFy. His new book The Imaginary App\, published by MIT Press\, was released in 2014. National Geographic named Miller a National Geographic Emerging Explorer for 2014/2015. \nNOTE: Miller will not be present for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Alicia Ostriker is a poet and critic\, author of seventeen collections of poetry\, most recently The Book of Seventy (winner of the National Jewish book Award)\, The Old Woman\, the Tulip and the Dog\, and Waiting for the Light.  She has received the Paterson Poetry Prize\, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Award\, the William Carlos Williams Award\, and has been twice nominated for the National Book Award\, among other honors.    As a critic she is the author of Stealing the Language; the Emergence of Women’s Poetry in America\, and other books on poetry and on the Bible.  She is distinguished Professor Emerita of Rutgers University\, teaches in the low-residency Poetry MFA program at Drew university\, and is currently a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. This event is part of the Jewish Cultural Studies Program.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Weili Shi
DESCRIPTION:Weili Shi is an artist who designs through the media of digital technologies. He creates unconventional experiences with the aim of provoking people’s consciousness. In his most recent work\, Shan Shui in the World\, he transformed the information of the buildings in Manhattan\, NY\, into traditional Chinese shan shui (landscape) paintings by a custom algorithm. This project revisits the ideas implicit in Chinese literati paintings of shan shui: the relationship between urban life and people’s yearning for nature\, and between social responsibility and spiritual purity. With generative technology\, Shan Shui in the World has the ability to represent any place in the world—including the city where the audience is—in the form of a shan shui painting. It has been translated into eight languages. She has twice been a MacDowell Colony Fellow\n(2012 and 2017)\, and has also received fellowships at Yaddo\, Ucross\, The Virginia Center for the Arts\, The Vermont Studio Center\, and Jentel. Her nonfiction has been published in The New York Times Book Review\, newyorker.com\, The Believer magazine\, Guernica\, and Post Road among other publications. A native of Durham\, NC\, Graedon is a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s MFA program\, and she is an Assistant Professor of English at Monmouth University. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.

SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald.  \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: Liz Moore
DESCRIPTION:Liz Moore is a writer of fiction and creative nonfiction.
Her first novel\, The Words of Every Song (Broadway Books\, 2007)\, centers on a fictional record company in New York City just after the turn of the millennium. It draws partly on Liz’s own experiences as a musician. It was selected for Borders’ Original Voices program and was given a starred review by Kirkus.Roddy Doyle wrote of it\, “This is a remarkable novel\, elegant\, wise\, and beautifully constructed. I loved the book.”

After the publication of her debut novel\, Liz obtained her MFA in Fiction from Hunter College. In 2009\, she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania’s ArtsEdge residency and moved to Philadelphia\, where she still lives. She is now an Assistant Professor of Writing at Holy Family University.

Her second novel\, Heft\, was published by W.W. Norton in January 2012 to popular and critical acclaim. Of Heft\, The New Yorker wrote\, “Moore’s characters are lovingly drawn…a truly original voice”; The San Francisco Chronicle wrote\, “Few novelists of recent memory have put our bleak isolation into words as clearly as Liz Moore does in her new novel”; and editor Sara Nelson wrote in O\, The Oprah Magazine\, “Beautiful…Stunningly sad and heroically hopeful.” The novel was published in five countries\, was long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, and was included on several “Best of 2012” lists\, including those of NPR and the Apple iBookstore.

Moore’s short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in venues such as Tin House\, The New York Times\, and Narrative Magazine. She is the winner of the Medici Book Club Prize and Philadelphia’s Athenaeum Literary Award. After winning a 2014 Rome Prize in Literature\, she spent 2014-15 at the American Academy in Rome\, completing her third novel. \nThat novel\, The Unseen World\, is forthcoming from W.W. Norton. in July 2016.
