SUMMARY:Enter The Facilitatrix: Strategic Soft Power for Collaborative Artists
DESCRIPTION:Elliot Reed’s Enter the Facilitatrix outlines a select few performances and\, through the use of participatory exercises\, enacts some the process he uses during rehearsals. Rehearsal provides an invaluable tool for developing content\, building camaraderie\, and identifying the unique talents of each person in the room. Reed believes in play and respects “unscripted” studio time as a constant wellspring of potential. His role as director is to highlight\, edit\, and reassemble the material presented to him. This is only possible by treating the cast as individuals\, promoting a shared goal while developing trust between each other. A trusting cast is able to extend their limits and offer support\, because the fear of ostracism is greatly diminished. His objective is to share improvisational tools for generating ideas\, clearing creative muck\, and bringing people together—inspiration that extends to many collaborative\, creative\, and social disciplines. \nElliot Reed is a performance artist and director based in New York City. Working in realtime\, Reed creates solos\, ensemble performances\, and videos that center the live subject. His projects exist between people\, leveraging candid interaction among performers and audience. Utilizing a choreographic lens\, Reed assembles bodies\, movement prompts\, and narrative within exhibition spaces. As viewers move through his work\, the narrative arc moves through them\, unfurling itself in actual time. Reed is a 2019 danceWEB scholar\, 2019-20 Artist In Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem\, and recipient of the 2019 Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays –  January 28\, February 4 and February 11 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nIn 1959\, a young songwriter named Berry Gordy started a record company with an $800 loan from his family. That company\, Motown\, would not only become the first Black-owned label to reach widespread national success; it would substantially transform music and culture.  This three-week course explores the evolution of the label\, from its beginnings through its 1960s heyday featuring acts like the Supremes\, the Four Tops\, and the Temptations. The 1970s brought political statements\, youthful pop\, and disco\, while the 1980s ushered in funk and smooth R&B. Through multimedia presentations and discussions\, this three-session virtual course\, taught by Kit O’Toole\, will cover all these eras\, enhancing understanding of Motown’s history and enduring legacy. \nKit O’Toole\, Ed.D. is the author of Michael Jackson FAQ: All That’s Left to Know about the King of Pop and Songs We Were Singing: Guided Tours through the Beatles’ Lesser-Known Tracks. When\, in 1922\, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal\, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol\, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov\, an indomitable man of erudition and wit\, has never worked a day in his life\, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. SUMMARY:The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of microscopic photography\, it fell to the varying artistic skills of scientists to show the world what the invisible plants and animals in our oceans looked like. One of the most prolific and talented was Ernst Haeckel\, an 1800s German zoologist and marine biologist whose groundbreaking sketches of organisms such as zooplankton\, diatoms and copepods continue to capture the imagination of science enthusiasts and artists to this day. Count among them Monmouth University Professor Pat Cresson\, who recently created over 50 works highlighting both microscopic marine organisms and larger sea creatures. \nCresson will present her collection\, The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea\, in a free public webinar on Nov. 18. The session is being offered as part of the Department of History & Anthropology’s Research and Teaching Pedagogy Seminar Series \nIn an interesting twist\, Cresson’s focus on the deep sea started with the CDC. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Cresson was struck by the aesthetic beauty of models showing the virus and began investigating what other infectious diseases looked like. This research eventually shifted to imagery depicting the unicellular and microscopic life forms that are abundant in our waters\, as Haeckel had famously done before. \n“Art and science are very similar in some perspectives\,” Cresson said. “Both science and art are human attempts to understand and describe the world around us. The subjects and methods have different traditions\, and the intended audiences are different\, but I think the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same.” \nCresson’s first works in the collection were detailed black ink drawings on heavy white watercolor paper. She then began creating a series of illustrations on deep wood panels that were covered with glued drawings on paper. Then an epoxy surface was poured over these panels\, sometimes stained blue or green giving the appearance that they were submerged under water. She also created several collages on paper adhered to wood panels depicting ocean scenes. (Scroll to gallery below to view samples of her works.) Materials for the project were purchased through a faculty enrichment grant awarded via the Urban Coast Institute’s Heidi Lynn Sculthorpe Scholars program. \nBuilding upon her work\, Cresson assigned her Advanced Digital Imaging class to create first traditional collages (cut paper and materials) and then digital collages focused on marine ecosystems. Some of the student works will also be presented in the upcoming webinar. \n“I gave them different ideas – the food web\, symbiotic relationships\, the role of light in the ocean\, the health of the ocean and warming oceans\, corals reefs and how they’re being bleached out\,” she said. “They came up with some really interesting imagery. I was very happy with what they came up with.”

DESCRIPTION:With Mike Richison \nSpecial Guest: Patrick Murray\, Monmouth University Polling Institute \nARTIST TALK:\nWednesday\, October 7\, 6:00 PM \nWORKSHOP:\nWednesday\, October 7\, 7:30 PM\nAttendees who are planning to participate in the 7:30 workshop are kindly requested to download and install a demo version of max msp jitter. This is not required. https://cycling74.com/downloads\n \nElecto Electro 2020 is an interactive installation combining audience participation\, music\, news footage\, and politics. The project allows participants to remix videos from political rallies\, debates\, and news in a structured sixteen beat loop. The touchscreen design is a parody of the system employed by the Accuvote\, a voting system that is difficult to audit and susceptible to hacking. The parody continues into the format of the installation itself which will resemble a polling station. There will be an artist talk at 6:00 followed by a Max MSP Jitter workshop at 7:30 pm. \nMike Richison is a multimedia artist and an Assistant Professor at Monmouth University in New Jersey where he teaches motion graphics. He employs a variety of approaches including sculpture\, graphic design\, and interactive video. His work utilizes found objects such as turntables\, voting booths\, and scavenged video clips as well as the Max MSP Jitter programming environment. Mike has exhibited at Autonomous Cultural Centre Medika (Zagreb\, Croatia); Figment NYC and Art in Odd Places (New York); and Peters Valley School of Craft and Morris Museum (New Jersey). His projects have received attention in outlets such as Leonardo\, Noisey (Music by VICE)\, FACT Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, WABC-TV Channel 7 News New York\, and The Washington Post. Before moving to New Jersey in 2007\, he lived in the Detroit\, Michigan area for several years. \nThese events are FREE and open to the public\, but please register if you plan to attend.\nThey are virtual only. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a zoom discussion of the film Salt of the Earth (2014)\, a riveting documentary about the Brazilian social photographer Sebastiao Salgado and his mission to document the destructive impact of unfettered industrial exploitation of natural resources and human relations from the late 1960s on\, and his own recent efforts to regenerate the rain forest in his native land. The film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Amazon Prime and YouTube (for rent or purchase). \nThe virtual discussion of the achievements and implications of Sebastiao Salgado’s life and work will be led by Professor Mark Ludak\, Specialist Professor of Photography in the Art and Design Department; and Professor Randall Abate\, the Rechnitz Family Endowed Chair of Marine and Environmental Law and Policy in the Department of Political Science and Sociology\, and the Director of the Institute of Global Understanding. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.
