SUMMARY:Climate Change and Mental Health: Fostering Hope and Connection
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Climate Crisis Teach-In 2025\nThis presentation explores the growing mental health impacts of climate change\, with a focus on community-level strategies that promote resilience\, hope\, and collective agency. Drawing on emerging research and best practices\, it highlights how climate anxiety and ecological grief—particularly among Gen Z—are shaped by systemic inequities\, uncertainty\, and disruption. The session emphasizes the importance of intergenerational dialogue\, mutual aid\, and relational care in fostering emotional support and wellbeing. Participants will be introduced to tools\, resources\, and evidence-informed approaches for creating communities of care where climate-related emotions are validated and shared. Together\, we will envision how interdisciplinary groups and diverse professionals can build climate-responsive mental health systems grounded in justice\, connection\, and collective action. \nRachel Forbes\, MSW (’11M)\, is the community outreach and engagement specialist at the Urban Coast Institute at Monmouth University. Forbes’s current research and teaching examines the impacts of climate change on mental health and protective factors at the community level. Her work has been published in environmental justice and human rights journals\, and has been funded by the CSWE Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work and the Hispanic Access Foundation. She is editor of the award winning book “Ecosocial Work: Environmental Practice and Advocacy” (NASW Press 2023).

SUMMARY:Regional Sustainable Economic Development around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University and the McMullen Family invite submissions for the first annual workshop on “Regional Sustainable Economic Development around the Globe”\, on June 6–7\, 2025. The workshop is co-organized by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission\, the Institute of Global Business and Society at TH Köln\, and CED (Center for Economic Development & Social Change). \nClimate change\, and the responses in both the public and private sector have led to an increasing presence of sustainability in all parts of the economy. Much attention is given to the analysis on the global and national level\, while also at the regional level these challenges need to be addressed. According to the OECD (2023)\, “quality regional development policy is essential for inclusive economic outcomes\, well-being\, environmental sustainability\, and resilience. Regions\, cities and rural areas play a crucial role in responding to megatrends including climate change\, digitalization\, demographic shifts\, and globalization.” The workshop aims to bring together academics\, policymakers and industry representatives to discuss these challenges and to learn from each other.

SUMMARY:Hernan Diaz\, Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is Hernan Diaz’s Trust. \nWINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION\nA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER \nEven through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s\, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together\, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds\, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit. \nHernan Diaz’s TRUST elegantly puts these competing narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction. The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Organized Crime and Abortion (Works in Progress Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Katherine Parkin\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Department of History and Anthropology; Jules Plangere\, Jr.\, Endowed Chair in American Social History \nOrganized crime played a role in the experience of many securing\, providing\, and paying for abortions before they were legalized. The high rates for the procedure made illegal abortion in the 1960s the third largest moneymaker for organized crime. However\, most studies by historians\, criminologists\, and sociologists have not considered how\, where\, and when organized criminals and their accomplices profited from abortion. This study of organized crime includes those providing abortions and lending money nationally\, including relatives of Frank Sinatra and Drea de Matteo (“The Sopranos”) who provided illegal abortions in New York City.

SUMMARY:Pysanky: Learn the Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Tuesday\, April 15 | 6 – 8:30 PM\n\n\nCome celebrate the spring at Monmouth University with this unique opportunity to learn the seasonal ancient art known as Pysanky. Pysanky\, also known as Ukrainian eggs\, is an ancient folk tradition that has been passed down for thousands of years. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come. This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky\, a demonstration\, and independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs\, dyes\, and tools. Participants will turn real eggs into works of art using a wax resist method similar to batik. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg\, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off. In-person attendance will be extremely limited.\n\nNo prerequisite skills are required. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. Ages 18+

SUMMARY:Jean Rhys\, Wide Sargasso Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea. \nWide Sargasso Sea\, a masterpiece of modern fiction\, was Jean Rhys’s return to the literary center stage. She had a startling early career and was known for her extraordinary prose and haunting women characters. With Wide Sargasso Sea\, her last and best-selling novel\, she ingeniously brings into light one of fiction’s most fascinating characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. This mesmerizing work introduces us to Antoinette Cosway\, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Mr. Rochester. Rhys portrays Cosway amidst a society so driven by hatred\, so skewed in its sexual relations\, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:STEMming from Punk Rock (Works in Progress Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jeffrey H. Weisburg\, Ph.D.\, Specialist Professor\, Department of Biology \nPunk rock usually conjures images of teenagers or young adults (you know\, the dregs of society) with spiked\, colorful hair\, tattoos\, piercing\, wearing ripped jeans\, Doc Martin combat boots\, dancing violently to bass-pounding music in a hot and sweaty\, small music venue. Ph.D. in the sciences\, engineers\, and pre-med students are the furthest thing that comes to mind. Three lead singers of landmark punk bands have Ph.D.s in biology; Milo Aukerman of the Descendents (Biology)\, Greg Graffin of Bad Religion (Zoology)\, and Dexter Holland of the Offsprings (Molecular Biology). Several other punk rock artists also have graduate degrees in biology and engineering. This leads to the scientific question that needs to be examined and answered: What is the connection between punk rock and science? Is there something in the water? Is it genetics? Is it a chemical reaction that occurs when two people in the circle pit collide? All possibilities for this question will be investigated.

SUMMARY:Louisa May Alcott\, Little Women
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is Louisa May Alcott\, Little Women. \nNominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read \nIt is no surprise that Little Women\, the adored classic of four devoted sisters\, was loosely based on Louisa May Alcott’s own life. In fact\, Alcott drew from her own personality to create a heroine unlike any seen before: Jo\, willful\, headstrong\, and undoubtedly the backbone of the March family. Follow the sisters from innocent adolescence to sage adulthood\, with all the joy and sorrow of life in between\, and fall in love with them and this endearing story. Praised by Madeleine Stern as “a book on the American home\, and hence universal in its appeal\,” Little Women has been an avidly read tale for generations. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Producing the Beatles
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – March 6 & 13 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nBased on his acclaimed podcast\, Producing the Beatles\, Jason Kruppa explores the music of the Fab Four from the perspective of the one person whose point of view has never been properly and thoroughly examined: their producer\, George Martin. Using innovative techniques to break down their recordings\, we’ll discover how the Beatles went from learning their way around the studio to becoming masters of the art of recording\, with their producer working side by side with them each step of the way. And finally\, with re-recordings and detailed recreations of Martin’s orchestral scores that allow us to hear individual instrument parts\,\, we’ll learn how his arrangements enhanced and shaped the Beatles’ music. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:What Does it Mean to Teach Right Now - Social Justice Academy Professional Development Series
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the current climate regarding equity in education\, the Social Justice Academy will host Cornelius Minor\, a well renowned Brooklyn-eased educator.\n\nSpring Distinguished Speaker \n\n \n\n“My job as a teacher is not to merely teach the curriculum or even to just teach the students; it is to seek to understand my kids as completely as possible so that I can purposefully bend and remix curriculum to meet them.”\n\n \n\nCornelius Minor is a Brooklyn-based educator and part-time Pokemon trainer. He works with teachers\, school leaders\, and leaders of community-based organizations to support equitable literacy reform in cities (and sometimes villages) across the globe. His latest book\, “We Got This”\, explores how the work of creating more equitable school spaces is embedded in our everyday choices—specifically in the choice to really listen to kids.\n\n \n\nMinor has been featured in Education Week\, Brooklyn Magazine\, and Teaching Tolerance magazine. He has partnered with the New York City Department of Education\, the International Literacy Association\, Scholastic\, and Lesley University’s Center for Reading Recovery & Literacy Collaborative. Minor was featured in the documentary “Out of Print”\, which made its way around the film festival circuit\, and he has been a featured speaker at conferences all over the world. He is a dedicated hip-hop fan\, and on some evenings\, you can find him online saving the universe with his PlayStation or on paper saving the realm in Dungeons & Dragons.\n\n \n\nMost recently\, along with his partner and wife\, Kass Minor\, he has established The Minor Collective\, a community-based movement designed to foster sustainable change in schools. Whether working with educators and kids in Los Angeles\, Seattle\, or New York City\, Minor uses his love for technology\, literature\, and social media to bring communities together. As a teacher\, Minor draws not only on his years teaching middle school in the Bronx and Brooklyn\, but also on time spent skateboarding\, shooting hoops\, and working with young people.\n\n \n\nThese days\, Minor is learning how to bake from his two young children\, searching for an elusive pair of Jordan IVs\, and is ritually re-reading all of the 1990s era comic books that he c

SUMMARY:The 1619 Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is The 1619 Project. \nA dramatic expansion of a groundbreaking work of journalism\, The 1619 Project: A New American Origin Story offers a profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present. \nThe New York Times Magazine‘s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work\, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression\, struggle\, and resistance. The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society\, from politics\, music\, diet\, traffic\, and citizenship to capitalism\, religion\, and our democracy itself. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.
