SUMMARY:The Woods - A mixed-reality\, two-player cooperative game
DESCRIPTION:“The Woods” is a mixed-reality\, two-player cooperative game that addresses the perils of social isolation by promoting connections between people and actively engaging them through play. Using  Augmented Reality (AR) and 4-channel audio spatialization panning\, players choreograph their movement in real-world space while interacting with birds\, clouds\, and other objects in virtual space. In pursuit of a shared goal\, players experience an immersive sonic narrative of rumbling storm clouds and disconnected voices that culminate in stories of hope and reconciliation. Kyoung teaches computer animation at ACCAD/The Ohio State University and specializes in cinematography for games and animation. Her current research focuses on creating games and animation for collaborative play\, using various emerging technology\, and practicing transdisciplinary collaboration. Her award-winning projects have been shown (inter)nationally at ACM SIGGRAPH\, IEEE-GEM\, Unite Berlin\, GDC\, Montreal Independent Game Festival\, and Bucheon International Animation Festival\, and many more. \nScott Swearingen is an Assistant Professor who teaches game design at ACCAD/The Ohio State University. With a research focus in designing game mechanics that enhance collaborative play\, his work cultivates the human experience of connectivity across a variety of physical and social boundaries. His award-winning games and other works have been exhibited at (in)ternational conferences and shows including SIGGRAPH\, SIGGRAPH-ASIA\, CURRENTS New Media\, GLS\, IEEE-GEM\, IFIP-ICEC\, Montreal Independent Games Festival\, and HASTAC. Prior to joining Ohio State\, Scott worked in the video game industry for over ten years as a game designer\, level designer\, and environment artist at multiple video game studios including MAXIS\, Electronic Arts\, and Gearbox Software. DESCRIPTION:An evidenced based program designed to inspire those who care for others to also take care of themselves. This program will explore the need for self-care and the research supporting it. \nThe presenters will focus on behaviors that can improve the mental and physical health of both the caregiver and their clients. Join us in exploring simple lifestyle changes and resources that can be shared with your friends and co-workers to improve workplace wellness. \nTopics Include \n\nThe evidence for self-care: Take good care of your-self: understanding the evidence and applying it to your life.\nMindful meditation: A guided practice and techniques to reduce stress\, enhance focus and well-being. Perfect for people who think they can’t meditate.\nTai Chi: Explore the numerous benefits and take part in a brief introduction to the movements.\nSelf-defense basics: Develop a mindful approach and awareness to your surroundings and observe simple strategies that can be applied in any setting.\n\nWear comfortable clothes and shoes! Participants will take part in a mindful meditation and participate in the gentle practice of Tai Chi. Self-defense techniques will be demonstrated. \nPresenters \n\nCynthia O’Connell is a recently retired Specialist Professor from the Educational Counseling graduate program at MU. She received her training in teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Integrative Medicine Center in Philadelphia.\nAndrea Garcia\, OTD\, MSW\, OTR/L is a specialist professor and doctoral capstone coordinator for Monmouth University’s occupational therapy program. She specializes in upper extremity rehabilitation. Dr. Garcia is a master teacher in reiki.\nShoshanna Katzman\, M.S\, L.Ac is the founder of Red Bank Acupuncture & Wellness Center. She has been practicing Tai Chi and Qigong since 1974. She also specializes in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.\nBrianna Wesley\, RN\, B.S. is a registered nurse in the emergency department and current graduate student at Monmouth University. She has a fourth degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do Chung Do Kwan and has been practicing for 22 years.\n\nSuccessful Completion: Participants will attend 95% of the program\, and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours. DESCRIPTION:Award Winning local Red Bank filmmaker and Monmouth Alum will present a talk and creative workshop at Monmouth University’s ArtNOW visiting artists series. Anthony Jude Setaro and cousin Douglas Booton will discuss their creative process in-depth as they dive deeper into the local history of their family emigrating from Italy. The Setaro family left Sassano\, Italy\, their home for the last 400 years\, in 1888\, searching for a better life in America. With maps and trade routes drawn out by their father\, Don Vito Setaro\, his sons split the family apart to create shipping routes to establish their wine business on the shores of New Jersey\, establishing an Italian community and then bootlegging in the Red Bank area. \nAfter releasing a podcast\, The Red Bank: Rum Runner\, Part 1: Temperance\, which they recorded with Ming Chen (A Shared Universe)\, Setaro and Booton are now using cutting-edge 3D software\, Unreal Engine (also used in The Mandalorian and The Matrix Awakens)\, to visually recreate Red Bank and Monmouth County in the early 1900s. Anthony and Doug are using Unreal Engine to bring long-forgotten ancestors back to life with an incredible level of lifelike detail. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Sept. 15\, Sept. 22 & Sept. 29 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nWhen the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame nominations occur every year\, the debate ignites: just what is rock?  Instead of drawing from one genre\, rock ’n’ roll draws from several\, all combining to create a sumptuous gumbo that rapidly captured the world’s imagination. \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole – the first of a two-part course – explores how gospel\, blues\, and jazz contributed to the development of the music of Elvis Presley\, Fats Domino\, Little Richard\, and much more. How gospel\, blues and jazz impacted instrumentation\, vocal style\, and composition will also be studied. In addition to multimedia presentations\, class discussion and activities will enable attendees to identify the essential elements of rock. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

His latest book\, John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life (2020)\, traces the story of the former Beatle’s comeback after five years of self-imposed retirement. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Adult Education Series Earth Day lecture with Heide Estes introducing the topic of Climate Crisis: What Can We Do? \nClimate crisis is real\, and is constantly in the news\, and triggers climate grief and climate anxiety. We need to take action\, and fast … but how? We need change at all levels: individual\, corporate\, and governmental\, and this lecture will provide strategies for how to engage in all three areas. You will learn about the importance of talking about climate with friends and family members\, voting with climate change in mind\, and disinvesting from fossil fuels — via your retirement fund\, your workplace\, anywhere you have influence. You will find out about ways you can change your diet\, your home\, and your transportation to lower your own carbon footprint\, and provide an example to those people you’re talking with. DESCRIPTION:Rivka Galchen is the recipient of a William Saroyan International Prize for Writing and a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award\, among other honors. She writes regularly for The New Yorker\, whose editors selected her for their list of “20 Under 40” American fiction writers in 2010. Her debut novel\, Atmospheric Disturbances (2008)\, and her story collection\, American Innovations (2014)\, were both New York Times Best Books of the Year. She received an MD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Galchen divides her time between Montreal and New York City. Her latest novel\, Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch\, was released by FSG in June. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet. On a summer’s day in 1596\, a young girl in Stratford-upon-Avon takes to her bed with a sudden fever. Her twin brother\, Hamnet\, searches everywhere for help. Why is nobody at home? \nTheir mother\, Agnes\, is over a mile away\, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London. Neither parent knows that Hamnet will not survive the week. Hamnet is a novel inspired by the son of a famous playwright: a boy whose life has been all but forgotten\, but whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays ever written. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. DESCRIPTION:It’s just like book club but with albums! With new advances in technology\, the way we consume music through our devices\, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora\, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. SUMMARY:Angela Kariotis: Rehearsing for the Future: Performance Technologies for Healing Centered Education
DESCRIPTION:Angela Kariotis is a community engaged culture worker and educator building creative programs serving the needs of cities\, institutions\, and students of all ages for public good. Kariotis integrates restorative practices for a transformative learning experience and a healing centered education. Using a design thinking framework and appreciative inquiry for experiential learning\, Kariotis synthesizes art-making for social entrepreneurship. Angela is winner of a NJSCA fellowship in playwriting\, a National Performance Network Creation Fund Award\, and a Tennessee Williams Theater Fellowship. As a performance artist\, she’s been presented by venues such as UCLA\, University of Texas at Austin\, People’s Light\, Legion Arts in Iowa\, and Contact Theater in Manchester\, UK. Kariotis is Curriculum Director and Facilitator of Walking the Beat\, a national arts education program interrogating the history of police\, the way we police each other\, and ideating alternative cultures of care.
