SUMMARY:British Invasion Part 1: Beginnings and Influences
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Tuesdays – September 19 & 26 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nBefore the Beatles kicked off the British Invasion of the US\, a musical revolution was underway in the UK. Teens reveled in listening to a specific type of American music: rock and roll from Elvis Presley\, Fats Domino\, Little Richard\, and more. Early Motown reached the Merseyside\, along with records by little-known (in America) R&B artists. At the same time\, James Brown and Ray Charles scored hits both in the US and the UK. However\, folk also attracted teens’ attention through a genre called skiffle\, a style that would greatly influence budding musicians such as John Lennon and Jimmy Page. \nThis two-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole examines the influences of these genres on what would become the British Invasion\, which would ultimately transform music worldwide. The class will survey the artists that would predate the Beatles: Billy Fury\, Cliff Richard\, the Shadows\, Tommy Steele\, The Vipers Skiffle Group\, and much more. It will reveal just how different the UK and US charts looked prior to the British Invasion\, and how these artists and numerous genres contributed to the transformation from 1950s to 1960s sounds. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Ecological Restoration Project for the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Many people feel helpless in the face of the climate crisis\, but there are many solutions. One solution that is well within the power of most people is strengthening the suburban environment.  Environments highly impacted by human intervention especially those with a high proportion of non-native plants are ecologically less stable and less resilient to the assaults of climate change. Environmental remediation by removal of invasive plants and replanting or planting native plants in areas disturbed by humans is partial ecological restoration.  As part of the Climate Crisis Teach-In\, Catherine Duckett\, Ph.D.\, will lead interested students and other members of the community in an ecological restoration project on Elinor Ave at Ross Lake Park and at adjacent Van Court Park. Volunteers will be shown how to identify the most common invasive vines and weeds. Volunteers will cut and remove these “invasives”s.  Areas suitable for replanting will be planted with hardy native species such as goldenrod\, violets and snakeroot.

Showcasing a range of visual art practices\, including performative\, experiential\, social\, and pedagogical\, Do You Know Where Your Art Comes From? investigates current and future models of art organizing. \nTransformer is a Washington DC based arts organization that develops multi-faceted exhibition and program platforms to advance emerging contemporary artists & arts practices. \nVictoria Reis is a curator\, writer\, and arts organizer who has been actively supporting contemporary visual artists and arts organizations within local\, national\, and international contexts since 1991. \nIn 2002\, Reis co-founded Transformer\, an internationally recognized non-profit visual arts organization based in Washington\, DC. Since 2006\, Reis has been leading Transformer as its Executive & Artistic Director\, curating and presenting substantial exhibitions and programs in support of emerging artists\, innovative cultural production\, and new & best practices within contemporary visual art. Reis has established comprehensive cultural partnerships & collaborations with an extensive range of arts\, educational\, and diplomatic organizations and institutions. She has launched and advanced the careers of several hundred artists. \nIn May 2017\, Reis expanded Transformer’s programming to include Siren Arts\, an Asbury Park\, NJ based summer residency program for emerging visual artists working within the performance art discipline. Siren Arts will be presenting its 7th season of programming summer 2023. Reis is a Founding Member of Common Field\, a national network of art spaces and artist-led initiatives. She has been a member of ArtTable since 2000. SUMMARY:Climate Crisis Teach-In 2023: Are the Answers to Climate Change ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’?
DESCRIPTION:A Marine Science and Policy Perspective on Offshore Wind Energy in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Jason Adolf\, Ph.D.\, Keith Dunton\, Ph.D.\, and Professor John Tiedemann. \nThe development of offshore wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuel-based energy is happening rapidly on the continental shelf off the coasts of New Jersey and New York. However\, there is a combination of excitement and reservation among academic\, environmental and stakeholder groups surrounding this issue – while the need for non-fossil fuel energy is clear\, the potential impacts off offshore wind development on the marine environment and economy are unclear.  This session will highlight the regulatory\, permitting\, and monitoring process involved in offshore wind development and highlight the involvement of Monmouth University faculty and students in fisheries monitoring plans aimed at detecting potential impacts of offshore wind development. Non-invasive techniques such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses and acoustic telemetry will be discussed with regard their role in the broader picture of understanding the continental shelf marine ecosystem and potential impacts of offshore wind.

SUMMARY:What Remains: Ghost Forests\, What We Have Lost and Gained.
DESCRIPTION:Pedram Daneshgar\, Ph.D. \nClimate change induced sea level rise and storm related flooding events have had a dramatic effect on the coastal ecosystems of New Jersey. Salt water intrusion into coastal forests that are normally buffered by salt marsh ecosystems forests results in extensive tree die offs leaving behind what has been termed a “ghost forest\,” a novel marsh hybrid ecosystem filled with dead trees. Often these ghost forests are invaded by non-native species like phragmites\, which completely alter the function of the ecosystem. Pedram Daneshgar\, Ph.D.\, will share the work his lab has done exploring the Ecology of ghost forests specifically looking at how the forest communities are changed. Then he will discuss preliminary work on restoration strategies for these forests.

DESCRIPTION:The author will read from her book What Happened to Paula followed by a Q&A. \nKatherine Dykstra holds an MFA in creative writing from the New School. She served as senior nonfiction editor at Guernica for many years and taught narrative nonfiction in NYU’s continuing studies program. Her essays have been published in The Washington Post\, Crab Orchard Review\, The Common\, Shenandoah\, Gulf Coast\, Brain\, Child\, Poets and Writers\, Real Simple and the Random House anthology 20 Something Essays by 20 Something Writers\, among other places. Her work has been included in the “Notables” section of both the 2015 and 2016 Best American Essays collections edited by Ariel Levy and Jonathan Franzen\, respectively. She was one of three finalists for the 2014 John Guyon Literary Nonfiction Prize. She won first place in the 2012 Waterman Fund Essay Contest and placed third in the 2013 Real Simple Life Lessons Essay Contest. \nShe was recently named an “artist to watch” by Creative Capital for her work on the Paula Oberbroeckling story\, which is the topic of her debut nonfiction book What Happened to Paula: On the Death of An American Girl\, published by W.W. DESCRIPTION:Dinty W. Moore is a celebrated American essayist and a pioneering\, early practitioner of creative nonfiction. He received the Grub Street National Book Prize for Non-Fiction for his memoir\, Between Panic and Desire\, in 2008 and\, more recently\, is also the author of the memoir To Hell With It: Of Sin and Sex\, Chicken Wings\, and Dante’s Entirely Ridiculous\, Needlessly Guilt-Inducing Inferno\, the writing guides The Story Cure\, Crafting the Personal Essay\, and The Mindful Writer\, and many other books and edited anthologies.
