SUMMARY:Collective Unconscious: Artist Talk with Amanda Stojanov
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Stojanov is an artist\, educator\, and activist. Her work explores storytelling through multi-tech platforms including VR\, immersive audio/visual projection\, animation\, and others. She has worked with design teams in large design studios\, independent agencies\, and non-profit organizations\, and she continues to work as a freelance art director and designer. Stojanov is a member/co-founder at voidLab and co-founder of voidLab’s panel series DECENTRALIZING THE WEB (projects.dma.ucla.edu/voidlab)\, which cultivates critical evaluations of online presence through an intersectional feminist lens. It aims to untangle the psycho-social implications of identity politics on the global web\, examining the embedded biases driving dominant modes of representation in digital spaces. \nStojanov has exhibited her work in California\, Budapest\, and Linz. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Interactive Digital Media in Monmouth University’s Department of Communication. SUMMARY:Strange Radio\, Live! Listening to the Deep Connection: Lecture-Performance Transmission with Karen Werner
DESCRIPTION:Strange Radio\, Live! is an immersive lecture-performance in story and sound\, part of an ongoing series of experimental radio narrowcasts and broadcasts about the stranger\, nearness and distance\, forced migration\, displacement\, home\, and the intergenerational transmission of memory. Strange Radio’s point of departure is Holocaust postmemory in Vienna\, Austria\, a sonic portal for sensing experiences of strangers and strangeness in multiple unfolding contexts across the globe. Strange Radio\, Live! weaves together personal documentary; disembodied voices and sounds separated from points of origin; fragile signals transmitted through radios and embodied reflections on memory\, place\, time\, and radio—itself a strange medium. Postmemories bounce against histories\, sometimes buried and inaudible\, in new locations. Tuned into both utopian longings and wounds\, Strange Radio is a fragile signal\, a love song to radio as a medium\, metaphor\, and method of deep listening together. \nKaren Werner is an award-winning radio artist\, audio storyteller\, and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe\, North America\, Australia\, and Israel. They have also been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018\, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier\, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus\,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner is a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and was a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice.  She is on the faculty of the BFA in Socially Engaged Art Program at Goddard College in Vermont. \nWerner’s work can be seen at: KarenWerner.net

DESCRIPTION:The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University will present An Evening with Tone\, featuring David Sancious\, Ernest “Boom” Carter\, and Gerald Carboy\, hosted by Bob Santelli\, Founding Executive Director of the Grammy Museum\, on Sunday\, October 6\, at 7 p.m. in the Pollak Theater on the university campus. \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nIn 1974 E Street Band keyboards player Sancious and drummer Carter left the group and teamed with Carboy\, a Jersey Shore bass player\, to form the jazz-fusion band Tone. Acclaimed by critics\, Tone’s music expanded the parameters of fusion and featured the extraordinary keyboard work of Sancious. The group’s album\, Transformation: The Speed of Love\, is an acknowledged fusion classic. \n“Tone was one of the great jazz bands from the Jersey Shore\,” said Santelli\, author of Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. “Critics loved the band\, but during the mid-1970’s hype surrounding the release of Born to Run\, Tone didn’t get the attention it deserved from Springsteen fans.” \nSantelli will interview the musicians about Tone\, their years in the Jersey Shore music scene\, and the role Sancious and Carter played in the early days of the E Street Band. The night will conclude with a rare performance by the trio. \nAdditionally\, authors Barry Schneier and Chris Phillips will be on site to sign their book\, Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Roll Future\, published earlier this year. The book features Schneier’s photographs from the legendary performance of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Harvard Square Theatre in 1974. It was that show that was reviewed by future manager Jon Landau\, who wrote\, “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” The band line-up for that Boston show included Sancious and Carter.

SUMMARY:Woodstock - Director's Cut
DESCRIPTION:The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement\, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It’s more than a chronicle of the hippie movement\, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance\, capturing the spirit of America in transition\, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese)\, director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director’s cut\, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film’s release in 1970. \nThe film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary\, and it’s still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd (“half a million strong”) expresses the human heart of the event\, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses\, to unpredictable weather\, midconcert childbirth\, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then\, of course\, there is the music–a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period\, including Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash\, Canned Heat\, The Who\, Richie Havens\, Joan Baez\, Ten Years After\, Sly & The Family Stone\, Santana\, and many more. Watching this ambitious film\, as the saying goes\, is the next best thing to being there–it’s a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event.

SUMMARY:Woodstock & Beyond: The Visionary Art of Mike Frankel
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of photographs by artist/photographer\, Mike Frankel that capture many of the historic milestones in rock history including; the first ever appearance of Led Zeppelin in New York City and the Who’s first New York City performance of Tommy\, along with photographs from the stage at Woodstock. The images have been scanned and printed directly from the 35 mm transparencies. The finished 35 mm slides were composed and exposed with up to 10 images on one frame of film while the action never stopped. There are some compelling single image photographs in the exhibition\, but the multiple image photographs vividly demonstrate the power and dynamism of the rock ‘n’ roll experience.

SUMMARY:Vincent DiMattio: DreamPaths and Napkin Drawings
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of drawings on napkins and new works by Vincent DiMattio. DiMattio earned his MFA from Southern Illinois University and his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He joined Monmouth University’s faculty in 1968 where he served as the department chair for 13 years and as gallery director for more than 20 years. He has shown his work internationally in Madrid\, Spain; San Juan\, Puerto Rico and Pueblo\, Mexico. He has also exhibited throughout the United States\, and at both the Newark and Trenton Museums.

SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: Exploring the Colors
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of works exploring the world of colors created by the American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau. Born in Philadelphia in 1917\, Jacob Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He had over sixty one-person shows and was the recipient of many awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants. Many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nFor Jacob Landau “art enables us to see the world whole and undivided.” As a humanist his art was devoted to the unity of the imagination. And at its center lies Landau’s desire for justice in the world. In the current exhibit his celebration of our love of color\, shared across so many cultures\, is inseparable from his humanist conviction. Color and drawing\, Landau once declared\, are the “twin fundaments of my style.” And he has been praised by fellow artists and critics as a colorist. His dazzling palette and expressive line exhilarate us. We find ourselves transported by their exuberant life\, colors that rise up and sing for us in a work titled Flight. And yet his love affair with color does not blind him to the world of injustice. \nOn the one hand\, his red and orange and yellow\, and green and blue watercolors of gorgeous promise\, so exquisitely handled in a radically imagined portrait of Isaiah dazzle us with life. But by the same token\, Landau by these colors insists on the social justice that Isaiah declaimed. Justice\, the artist makes clear in his beautiful and unsettling riot of forms\, that he expects of us. \nUniquely\, his canvass of many colors dazzles and disturbs. His understated colors in Apocalypsis fill us with foreboding\, and he asks\, “Whose apocalypse is it anyway ours or God’s?” Just like Landau to leave us with an uncomfortable question in the language of subtle colors. At the same time\, we see a bold backdrop of brilliant yellow across the way in his Oracle 1\, dramatizing the hope that resides in the human heart. A yellow we can’t shake as we walk away. \nThe exhibition features a selection of some twenty-one works. All are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. SUMMARY:Black Maria Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory\, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio\, the first in the world\, in West Orange\, NJ. Now in its 38th year\, the festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium\, an independent non-profit organization in residence at New Jersey City University’s Department of Media Arts. Unlike other major film festivals\, the Black Maria Festival is not presented in only one location. SUMMARY:Fred Astaire’s Dancing Lessons: Queer Mentors and Monsters: Multimedia Performance by Dustin B. Goltz
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be “part” of the queer community in 2019? Who tells you your story? Your history? Your future? This solo performance is a 70-minute multimedia\, performative examination of shifting perceptions of queer male mentorship\, LGBT aging anxieties\, and the lingering cultural threat assigned to queer sexuality. The piece is an avalanche of pop culture\, flamboyance and monstrosity—an intertextual interrogation of queer generational tensions- reclaiming a story of the monsters who refuse to die (for long)\, refuse to hide the histories their bodies carry\, and who keep surviving through wit\, camp\, irreverence\, and an ongoing commitment to the queer community. \nDustin Bradley Goltz is an Associate Professor of Performance Studies and Communication at DePaul University in Chicago. He is a scholar and performing artist whose work examines gay aging\, queer temporality\, LGBTQ media representation\, and personal narrative performance. His research has been published in over two dozen articles in journals\, which include Text & Performance Quarterly\, Critical Studies in Media Communication\, and Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. His most recent book\, Comic Performativities: Identity\, Internet Outrage\, and the Aesthetics of Communication was published by Routledge in 2017.
