The French-Belgian biographical adventure film directed by Jérôme Salle and written by Salle and Laurent Turner\, is based on the non-fiction book Capitaine de La Calypso by Albert Falco and Yves Paccalet. SUMMARY:Policing in Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation on Police Violence\, Black Lives Matter\, and Police Reform. \nPanelists\n\n\nLorenzo M. Boyd\, Ph.D.\, is a nationally recognized leader in police-community relations and an authority on urban policing. Boyd is the vice president for diversity & inclusion at the University of New Haven. As the former director of the Center for Advanced Policing and a life member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE)\, Boyd has appeared on local\, regional\, and national media outlets to discuss policing in the aftermath of high-profile cases. \n\n\n\nJason Williams\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor of justice studies at Montclair State University. He is a passionate activist criminologist deeply concerned about racial disparity and mistreatment within the criminal legal system. Williams has conducted ethnographic research in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and Ferguson\, Missouri\, following the police-involved tragedies of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. He recently published a co-edited book entitled Black Males and the Criminal Justice System. \n\n\n\nSean K. Wilson\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at William Paterson University. As a community-based scholar\, Wilson’s research seeks to foreground the voices and lived experiences of the oppressed and marginalized. His research interests include reentry\, critical policing\, critical criminology\,reentry\, critical gang studies\, and race and justice. \n\n\n\nAndrea McChristian\, Esq.\, is the law and policy director at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. In this capacity\, she leads the implementation of the strategic vision and the director of the law and policy program. Andrea oversees the programmatic function of the institute’s three pillars of social justice: democracy and justice\, economic justice\, and criminal justice reform. SUMMARY:Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain - VIRTUAL PANEL DISCUSSION
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “A Delicate Balance: Global Communities and the Natural World” by analyzing the message and impact of Ravi Kumar’s 2014 docudrama\, Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain. Released on the 30th anniversary of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal\, India on December 2-3\, 1984\, the film analyses the causes of the chemical leak and vapor spread that killed as many as 10\,000 people in Bhopal and the responsibility of the Union Carbide corporate leadership\, its local operatives in Bhopal\, and the complicity of local officials in creating the conditions that led to the environmental catastrophe\, their efforts to avoid accountability\, and the legacy of the disaster. Combining suspense and a charismatic cast the film\, in the words of one critic (Martin Tsai of ‘The Los Angeles Times’) is “a cautionary tale that could not be more relevant.” (13 November 2014). The discussion of the film will be led by Dr. Datta Naik\, Professor of Chemistry\, and Dr. Marina Vujnovic\, Associate Professor of Communication\, and a specialist on global communications. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Virtual Blue Hawk Records Release Show for “Reviver"
DESCRIPTION:With the ever-changing\, and at times frightening outside world\, there is one thing that’s for certain: nothing can stop the music. Blue Hawk Records has been grinding to perfect their seventeenth compilation album\, Reviver. Since the start of the fall 2020 semester\, the team has been meeting regularly\, held in-person and virtual auditions\, went into Lakehouse Recording Studio in Asbury Park to record\, mix\, and master the album\, and is set for an upcoming virtual release show. The release show will be held on Instagram live on December 9 starting at 8 pm. The Instagram handle to tune in to is @bluehawkrecordsoffical. \nIncluded are two rappers\, Hasan Chambers and Gabe Garza\, otherwise known as Double G\, both whose songs take the listener through a story-like experience with a moving message. A&R reps Ethan Christensen and Mikey Sacnhez\, helped arrange\, and recorded on\, artist Charlie Krause’s piano-based song “Those Green Eyes”\, giving it a driving full-band sound. SUMMARY:The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of microscopic photography\, it fell to the varying artistic skills of scientists to show the world what the invisible plants and animals in our oceans looked like. One of the most prolific and talented was Ernst Haeckel\, an 1800s German zoologist and marine biologist whose groundbreaking sketches of organisms such as zooplankton\, diatoms and copepods continue to capture the imagination of science enthusiasts and artists to this day. Count among them Monmouth University Professor Pat Cresson\, who recently created over 50 works highlighting both microscopic marine organisms and larger sea creatures. \nCresson will present her collection\, The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea\, in a free public webinar on Nov. 18. The session is being offered as part of the Department of History & Anthropology’s Research and Teaching Pedagogy Seminar Series \nIn an interesting twist\, Cresson’s focus on the deep sea started with the CDC. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Cresson was struck by the aesthetic beauty of models showing the virus and began investigating what other infectious diseases looked like. This research eventually shifted to imagery depicting the unicellular and microscopic life forms that are abundant in our waters\, as Haeckel had famously done before. \n“Art and science are very similar in some perspectives\,” Cresson said. “Both science and art are human attempts to understand and describe the world around us. The subjects and methods have different traditions\, and the intended audiences are different\, but I think the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same.” \nCresson’s first works in the collection were detailed black ink drawings on heavy white watercolor paper. She then began creating a series of illustrations on deep wood panels that were covered with glued drawings on paper. Then an epoxy surface was poured over these panels\, sometimes stained blue or green giving the appearance that they were submerged under water. She also created several collages on paper adhered to wood panels depicting ocean scenes. (Scroll to gallery below to view samples of her works.) Materials for the project were purchased through a faculty enrichment grant awarded via the Urban Coast Institute’s Heidi Lynn Sculthorpe Scholars program. \nBuilding upon her work\, Cresson assigned her Advanced Digital Imaging class to create first traditional collages (cut paper and materials) and then digital collages focused on marine ecosystems. Some of the student works will also be presented in the upcoming webinar. \n“I gave them different ideas – the food web\, symbiotic relationships\, the role of light in the ocean\, the health of the ocean and warming oceans\, corals reefs and how they’re being bleached out\,” she said. “They came up with some really interesting imagery. I was very happy with what they came up with.”

This is not required. https://cycling74.com/downloads\n \nElecto Electro 2020 is an interactive installation combining audience participation\, music\, news footage\, and politics. The project allows participants to remix videos from political rallies\, debates\, and news in a structured sixteen beat loop. The touchscreen design is a parody of the system employed by the Accuvote\, a voting system that is difficult to audit and susceptible to hacking. The parody continues into the format of the installation itself which will resemble a polling station. There will be an artist talk at 6:00 followed by a Max MSP Jitter workshop at 7:30 pm. \nMike Richison is a multimedia artist and an Assistant Professor at Monmouth University in New Jersey where he teaches motion graphics. He employs a variety of approaches including sculpture\, graphic design\, and interactive video. His work utilizes found objects such as turntables\, voting booths\, and scavenged video clips as well as the Max MSP Jitter programming environment. Mike has exhibited at Autonomous Cultural Centre Medika (Zagreb\, Croatia); Figment NYC and Art in Odd Places (New York); and Peters Valley School of Craft and Morris Museum (New Jersey). His projects have received attention in outlets such as Leonardo\, Noisey (Music by VICE)\, FACT Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, WABC-TV Channel 7 News New York\, and The Washington Post. Before moving to New Jersey in 2007\, he lived in the Detroit\, Michigan area for several years. \nThese events are FREE and open to the public\, but please register if you plan to attend.\nThey are virtual only. DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia is a worldwide collaborative encyclopedia project made up of a globalized network of volunteers who give their time to edit the site. Within this globalized network\, there still lacks a diversity of voices. “In a 2011 survey\, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research puts that number at 16% globally and 23% in the United States.”  (Mandiberg\, M.\, Prajapati\, S.\, & Schrock\, R.\, 2020). Who contributes to a database matters. Especially when in 2015\, that database was “the 7th most visited website in the world” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). A 2011 study from the Pew Research Center\, shows that “the more educated someone is\, the more likely he or she is to consult Wikipedia. Almost 70 percent of Americans with college degrees read Wikipedia” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). If college-educated people and students are using Wikipedia as a main source of information\, there is an argument for students learning how to edit and contribute to the online encyclopedia that they use. \nIt is increasingly important for cis and trans women\, gender-non-conforming people\, people of color\, and Indigenous communities to be written back into history. When information systems like Wikipedia systematically exclude aspects of the human experience\, our understanding of the world is incomplete.
