DESCRIPTION:Entering its 2nd year on the virtual stage\, this year’s Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival will feature members of the Garden State Philharmonic performing music from Civil War era Marches through Ragtime\, Dixieland\, and Jazz featuring music by composers George Gershwin\, Scott Joplin\, C.W. Handy\, Duke Ellington\, and Louis Armstrong. The festival will also highlight selections and solos from The Monmouth University Chamber Choir\, a performance by the Blue Hawk House Band and a special reading by former United States Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Tretheway. The festival will premiere at 7:00 PM on July 1st and be available to view through July 31st. To receive the streaming link for the festival you will need to register. \nThe Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival is designed to provide Monmouth County communities and beyond\, along with the students\, faculty\, and staff at Monmouth University\, with the opportunity to enjoy a top-flight music and arts event each summer. \nIn 2022\, we are looking forward to presenting a robust program of offerings as the festival will host its inaugural in-person event. Our university is the year-round home for working musicians and artists\, not to mention scores of students honing their talents as instrumental and theatrical performers\, visual artists\, and arts administrators. With the Music and Arts Festival becoming a yearly tradition\, we hope to attract nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians and other fine artists to our campus. SUMMARY:The Fine Art of Denim
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION EXTENDED UNTIL OCTOBER 14!!\nDenim\, with all its symbols and dualities\, is a common item of clothing that unites many around the globe. Dad Jeans\, skinny jeans\, low riders\, bell bottoms\, boot leg\, wide leg\, no leg\, 501s\, 504s\, button fly\, stretch jeans\, the American dress code writ large across centuries. With so many styles available and ways to accessorize/manipulate the fabric\, denim has historically allowed for a freedom of expression representing both individuality and shifts in cultural movements. Denim comes in a wide range of blues and other colors\, washes\, fades and textures making it a perfect\, but not obvious\, medium to create fine artwork. Denim that was discarded can open up a new way of looking\, a startling way of seeing past the everyday. What we have abandoned\, will be presented again\, re-purposed from the lives we lived\, to moments we experience together “forever in blue jeans.” \nMonmouth University’s Center for the Arts is pleased to present The Fine Art of Denim\, a juried exhibition of artists who use recycled denim in new and creative ways. DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s 6th annual Student Scholarship Week: Celebrating the Research\, Creative\, and Service Accomplishments of MU Students will take place virtually April 19-23\, 2021. Student Scholarship Week is a weeklong conference that showcases and celebrates students’ academic work inside and outside of the classroom\, as well as highlights faculty-student collaboration\, across the University. This includes highlighting students’ scholarly contributions in research\, writing\, service learning\, clinical experiences (i.e. study abroad\, internships)\, musical and theater productions\, art exhibits\, student development and leadership\, student clubs\, etc. \nThis year\, Student Scholarship Week will be held virtually for the safety of our students and staff. SUMMARY:Enter The Facilitatrix: Strategic Soft Power for Collaborative Artists
DESCRIPTION:Elliot Reed’s Enter the Facilitatrix outlines a select few performances and\, through the use of participatory exercises\, enacts some the process he uses during rehearsals. Rehearsal provides an invaluable tool for developing content\, building camaraderie\, and identifying the unique talents of each person in the room. Reed believes in play and respects “unscripted” studio time as a constant wellspring of potential. His role as director is to highlight\, edit\, and reassemble the material presented to him. This is only possible by treating the cast as individuals\, promoting a shared goal while developing trust between each other. A trusting cast is able to extend their limits and offer support\, because the fear of ostracism is greatly diminished. His objective is to share improvisational tools for generating ideas\, clearing creative muck\, and bringing people together—inspiration that extends to many collaborative\, creative\, and social disciplines. \nElliot Reed is a performance artist and director based in New York City. Working in realtime\, Reed creates solos\, ensemble performances\, and videos that center the live subject. His projects exist between people\, leveraging candid interaction among performers and audience. Utilizing a choreographic lens\, Reed assembles bodies\, movement prompts\, and narrative within exhibition spaces. As viewers move through his work\, the narrative arc moves through them\, unfurling itself in actual time. Reed is a 2019 danceWEB scholar\, 2019-20 Artist In Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem\, and recipient of the 2019 Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant. SUMMARY:Policing in Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation on Police Violence\, Black Lives Matter\, and Police Reform. \nPanelists\n\n\nLorenzo M. Boyd\, Ph.D.\, is a nationally recognized leader in police-community relations and an authority on urban policing. Boyd is the vice president for diversity & inclusion at the University of New Haven. As the former director of the Center for Advanced Policing and a life member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE)\, Boyd has appeared on local\, regional\, and national media outlets to discuss policing in the aftermath of high-profile cases. \n\n\n\nJason Williams\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor of justice studies at Montclair State University. He is a passionate activist criminologist deeply concerned about racial disparity and mistreatment within the criminal legal system. Williams has conducted ethnographic research in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and Ferguson\, Missouri\, following the police-involved tragedies of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. He recently published a co-edited book entitled Black Males and the Criminal Justice System. \n\n\n\nSean K. Wilson\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at William Paterson University. As a community-based scholar\, Wilson’s research seeks to foreground the voices and lived experiences of the oppressed and marginalized. His research interests include reentry\, critical policing\, critical criminology\,reentry\, critical gang studies\, and race and justice. \n\n\n\nAndrea McChristian\, Esq.\, is the law and policy director at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. In this capacity\, she leads the implementation of the strategic vision and the director of the law and policy program. Andrea oversees the programmatic function of the institute’s three pillars of social justice: democracy and justice\, economic justice\, and criminal justice reform. SUMMARY:Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain - VIRTUAL PANEL DISCUSSION
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “A Delicate Balance: Global Communities and the Natural World” by analyzing the message and impact of Ravi Kumar’s 2014 docudrama\, Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain. Released on the 30th anniversary of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal\, India on December 2-3\, 1984\, the film analyses the causes of the chemical leak and vapor spread that killed as many as 10\,000 people in Bhopal and the responsibility of the Union Carbide corporate leadership\, its local operatives in Bhopal\, and the complicity of local officials in creating the conditions that led to the environmental catastrophe\, their efforts to avoid accountability\, and the legacy of the disaster. Combining suspense and a charismatic cast the film\, in the words of one critic (Martin Tsai of ‘The Los Angeles Times’) is “a cautionary tale that could not be more relevant.” (13 November 2014). The discussion of the film will be led by Dr. Datta Naik\, Professor of Chemistry\, and Dr. Marina Vujnovic\, Associate Professor of Communication\, and a specialist on global communications. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.
