Douglas Taurel (“Nurse Jackie\,” “Blue Bloods”) is the creator and star of the Off-Broadway Award-nominated solo play\, “The American Soldier\,” based on true events and documentary letters written by veterans and their family members from the American Revolution through current-day Afghanistan. It honors the experiences of veterans and their families and explores the internal struggles they face when returning home from combat. “The American Soldier” has been nominated for the Amnesty International Award for theatre excellence \, received 4 stars internationally\, and has been featured in The Huffington Post\, The Washington Post and Time Out.\n\n\nThere will also be a FREE evening performance of this show at 8PM. DESCRIPTION:The author will read from her book What Happened to Paula followed by a Q&A. \nKatherine Dykstra holds an MFA in creative writing from the New School. She served as senior nonfiction editor at Guernica for many years and taught narrative nonfiction in NYU’s continuing studies program. Her essays have been published in The Washington Post\, Crab Orchard Review\, The Common\, Shenandoah\, Gulf Coast\, Brain\, Child\, Poets and Writers\, Real Simple and the Random House anthology 20 Something Essays by 20 Something Writers\, among other places. Her work has been included in the “Notables” section of both the 2015 and 2016 Best American Essays collections edited by Ariel Levy and Jonathan Franzen\, respectively. She was one of three finalists for the 2014 John Guyon Literary Nonfiction Prize. She won first place in the 2012 Waterman Fund Essay Contest and placed third in the 2013 Real Simple Life Lessons Essay Contest. \nShe was recently named an “artist to watch” by Creative Capital for her work on the Paula Oberbroeckling story\, which is the topic of her debut nonfiction book What Happened to Paula: On the Death of An American Girl\, published by W.W. Norton.  What Happened to Paula received a starred and boxed Publishers Weekly review and was designated a New York Times Summer Read\, a People magazine Best New Book\, one of Crimereads’ Top Ten Books of 2021\, a Boston Globe Book of Summer\, an Observer Best Book of Summer\, and a Crimereads Best Book of Summer. DESCRIPTION:Feminist theatre/performance studies scholar and artist Dr. Tessa Carr will give an artist talk about her experiences directing plays and developing devised performances with college students and in communities using a feminist ethics of care. \nArtist Talk: Monday\, March 20\, 2023\, 4:30-5:30 SC 202B \nTessa Carr serves as Associate Professor of Theatre and Artistic Director of Mosaic Theatre Company at Auburn University in Auburn\, Alabama. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Performance Studies and a portfolio in Women’s and Gender Studies. Her research focuses on devised performance in practice and theory\, autobiographical performance\, feminist performance strategies and performance as pedagogy. She is currently co-authoring a manuscript with Dr. Deanna Shoemaker about collaborative performance as a social justice communicative intervention. She writes\, directs\, and facilitates performance throughout the year in the mainstage season at Auburn University and with Mosaic Theatre Company.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series film screening/discussion illuminating the theme “Wartime Lives: Enduring and Transcending Violence and Occupation” by analyzing the message and impact of the film As We Forgive (2009). \nDirected by Laura Waters Hinson and narrated by Mia Farrow comes the award-winning documentary of two Rwandan women who struggle with the face-to-face encounter with the men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. These women and men speak for a nation still wracked by the grief of a genocide that killed one in eight Rwandans. Overwhelmed by an enormous backlog of court cases\, the government released 50\,000 perpetrators back to the very communities they helped to destroy. Without the hope of full justice\, Rwanda has turned to a new solution of reconciliation. DESCRIPTION:Sam Lipsyte is the author of five novels and two short-story collections\, including The Ask\, Hark  and No One Left to Come Looking for You. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, The Paris Review\, n+1\, Noon\, Open City\, The Quarterly and Best American Short Stories\, among other places. A Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the Believer Book Award\, he lives in New York City and teaches at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:This year being the 50th anniversary of the emergence of hip hop\, the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music in association with Blue Hawk Records presents “Hip Hop in the Round\,” an evening of conversation and music featuring hip hop artists from Monmouth University and Asbury Park. \nHosted by Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Archives\, artists will share insight into their creative process\, their roots and influences\, and their forms of inspiration as well as perform selective tracks from their body of work. \nStudent artists include senior music industry major\, Gabe “Double G” Garza\, and juniors\, Justin Ume and Asad “Kid Ace” Whitehead. Also on the panel will be a special Asbury Park-based guest artist. \nReservations are encouraged and admission will be on a first-come-first-served basis. \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a film screening/panel discussion of the film From This Day Forward with director Sharon Shattuck and her parents Trisha and Marcia Shuttuck. \nWith her own wedding just around the corner\, filmmaker Sharon Shattuck returns home to examine the mystery at the heart of her upbringing: How her transgender father Trisha and her straight-identified mother Marcia stayed together against all odds. From This Day Forward is a moving portrayal of an American family coping with the most intimate of transformations. As the film evolves into a conversation about love and acceptance in a modern American family\, it raises questions relevant to all of us. As individuals how do we adapt to sustain long-term love and relationships? Where do sexuality and gender intersect? And how do families stay together\, when external forces are pulling them apart? \n \n  \nThis event is being held in conjunction with the juried gallery exhibition Aging and the Lived Experiences of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming (T/GNC) Older Adults: Narratives through Art on view in the Pollak Gallery January 23 – March 11.
