SUMMARY:The Third Annual Julian Abele “Out of the Shadows” Public History Symposium (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Public History Minor at Monmouth University \nThe Public History Minor at Monmouth University hosted the first annual Julian Francis Abele “Out of the Shadows” Virtual Public History Symposium via Zoom in 2021. Free for presenters and attendees alike\, the Symposium is intended as a welcoming place for public history practitioners at all levels\, established and emerging scholars\, and graduate and undergraduate students to share their public history work on individuals or groups in history whose legacies have been purposefully or inadvertently suppressed\, overshadowed\, or underappreciated. We hope to bring these parties out of the shadows and into the fuller appreciation that they so richly deserve. \nThe Symposium is named in honor of pioneering African American architect Julian Francis Abele\, who contributed greatly to the design of Monmouth University’s Great Hall (previously known as both Shadow Lawn and Wilson Hall). Everyone who has attended Monmouth University has personal memories of the building\, a National Historic Landmark. But if you ask them about it\, they are probably more likely to mention Woodrow Wilson’s brief time at the original Shadow Lawn (not “ours”)\, or the current mansion’s starring role as Daddy Warbucks’s home in the movie Annie than they are the fact that it was designed in large part by perhaps “the greatest American born Beaux-Arts architect\,” Julian Francis Abele. Monmouth University’s Fall 2020 Museums and Archives Management Basics class sought to increase awareness about Abele’s role in the creation of what is perhaps our University’s most beloved landmark by creating “The Julian Abele Project.” Now\, we hope to honor Abele’s name with this annual virtual public history symposium\, designed to bring regular attention to Abele’s story and to highlight work focused on other figures underrepresented in the historical record.

DESCRIPTION:Mihaela Moscaliuc is the author of the poetry collections Cemetery Ink (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2021)\,  Immigrant Model (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2015) and Father Dirt (Alice James Books\, 2010)\, translator of Liliana Ursu’s Clay and Star (Etruscan Press\, 2019) and Carmelia Leonte’s The Hiss of the Viper (Carnegie Mellon University Press\, 2015)\, editor of Insane Devotion: On the Writing of Gerald Stern (Trinity University Press\, 2016)\, and co-editor (with Michael Waters) of Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf\, 2020). She has published scholarship in the field of Romani Studies\, on issues of representation\, appropriation\, exophony and code-switching\, and on the works of Kimiko Hahn\, Agha Shahid Ali\, and Colum McCann. She is the Translation Editor for Plume. \nMoscaliuc has received two Glenna Luschei Awards from Prairie Schooner\, residency fellowships from The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, MacDowell\, and Le Chateau de Lavigny (Switzerland)\, Dairy Hollow\, two Individual Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, and a Fulbright fellowship to Romania. \nShe is graduate program director and associate professor of English at Monmouth University (New Jersey) and former poetry & translation faculty in the low-residency M.F.A. program at Drew University (New Jersey). \nMichael Waters’ recent books include Sinnerman (Etruscan Press\, 2023)\, Caw (BOA Editions\, 2020)\, & The Dean of Discipline (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2018). Darling Vulgarity (BOA Editions\, 2006) was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His co-edited anthologies include Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf\, 2020) & Reel Verse: Poems About the Movies (Knopf\, 2019). What will you give up by giving in? \nInviting Motion is an interactive Virtual Reality (VR) experience with themes of enticing\, luring\, attention grabbing\, and having to give something up when we give into attractions. \nTalk: 11:45am-12:30pm | The Great Hall Auditorium\nDemo: Experience Inviting Motion – 12:35pm-1:30pm & 2:50pm-4:30pm | Demo: IDM Lab (Plangere 135)\n\nThe Experience \nAfter going through a simple onboarding process to calibrate and tweak the experience\, you\, the user\, are initially tasked with finding a human form in the noise of particles that surround you. After your attention is grabbed\, you will be invited\, and then teased a little. You can enjoy exploring the interactions\, but what are you giving away? Are you being scrutinized? \nThe experience generally last about 5 to 10 minutes \nAbout the Project \nAs part of his Sabbatical from Monmouth University\, Wobbe F. Koning returned to his alma mater The Ohio State University and worked with the community at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) to produce this VR experience. Motion Capture was used to create the attention grabbing and inviting motions\, which are sparsely represented (using a limited amount of points) but are still instantly recognizable as human. \nThe project was a collaboration\, and took shape as a result of the interactions with the ACCAD community. \nBios:\nWobbe F. Koning is an award winning animator and digital artist often combining 3D Computer Animation and video with audio to create mostly linear single channel works. Next to creating 3D printed stop motion animations\, he has been exploring Virtual Reality (VR) as a medium\, experimenting with different approaches while relying on his experience as filmmaker. Though not in his nature\, he has been letting go of the total control the creator has over linear storytelling\, and in stead embraced the interactive nature of VR. \nEarlier work includes on-stage videos for dance performances\, and multi screen installations. At Monmouth University he teaches animation in the Department of Art & Design. \nRaven Serenity Glover received their bachelors degree in Simulation\, Animation\, and Gaming at Eastern Michigan University. There\, they gained skills in 3D animation and character modeling. In their undergraduate research symposium project\, Dynamic Storytelling with Animation\, Raven Serenity explored the potential advantages animation has over traditional filmmaking in telling dynamic narratives. As part of the MFA program in Digital Animation and Interactive Media at The Ohio State University\, Raven Serenity hopes to further expand the utilization of animation to promote self-awareness and self-expression.

Pixieish\, mohawk-sporting Klara and her best friend Bobo are 13-year-old rebels looking for a cause. Despite having no instruments—or discernible musical talent—the two put all their energy into forming an all-girl punk band\, recruiting their shy\, classical guitar-playing schoolmate Hedwig as a third wheel. SUMMARY:Ecological Restoration Project for the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Many people feel helpless in the face of the climate crisis\, but there are many solutions. One solution that is well within the power of most people is strengthening the suburban environment.  Environments highly impacted by human intervention especially those with a high proportion of non-native plants are ecologically less stable and less resilient to the assaults of climate change. Environmental remediation by removal of invasive plants and replanting or planting native plants in areas disturbed by humans is partial ecological restoration.  As part of the Climate Crisis Teach-In\, Catherine Duckett\, Ph.D.\, will lead interested students and other members of the community in an ecological restoration project on Elinor Ave at Ross Lake Park and at adjacent Van Court Park. Volunteers will be shown how to identify the most common invasive vines and weeds. Volunteers will cut and remove these “invasives”s.  Areas suitable for replanting will be planted with hardy native species such as goldenrod\, violets and snakeroot.

In this session\, he will review resume formatting tips\, what to include\, and what not to include to ensure that you stand out in your internship and job application process.  \nOscar Sanchez\, Jr. ’13 (He/Him) has been an early career recruiter at NBCUniversal since August 2021. In his role\, Oscar manages the internship hiring for the Ad Sales\, Content Distribution\, TV & Streaming\, and Corporate Functions businesses\, as well as an Ad Sales post-graduate rotational program. Prior to his role at NBCUniversal\, Oscar worked as an HR and DE&I manager at South Florida’s largest advertising agency\, Zimmerman Advertising. He also spent almost four years working for The Walt Disney Company in various roles including the Disney College Program\, professional and management internships\, and recruiting operations. SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: The Prophetic Quest
DESCRIPTION:An art exhibition that explores a range of works over a long career\, created by the American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau. The exhibition features a selection of some eighteen works. All are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings\, and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. \nReception: Thursday\, April 13\, from 4– 6 pm \nAbout Jacob Landau:\nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to have over sixty one-person shows\, featuring a wide range of drawings and paintings. The recipient of numerous awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants\, many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nFor Jacob Landau “art enables us to see the world whole and undivided.” And at its center lies the artist’s desire for justice in this world. The current exhibit reveals that his entire career was driven by such a quest from an early work with conte crayon\, “Two Women in Market” and his “Mine Strike at Auchel” through an “Einstein” portrait\, as well as watercolor pochoirs of “Malachi” and “Isaiah” who call for justice and whose bold colors and sinuous lines derive from their respective stained-glass windows that Landau created for the Keneseth Israel Synagogue in Elkins Park\, PA (just outside Philadelphia)\, two of ten windows\, each towering 5’x20’\, that flank the prayer hall. \nLandau’s Isaiah and Malachi watercolors exhilarate\, even as they confront the viewer. We realize that the prophet does not predict the future but reveals the present\, witnessing injustice\, condemning it\, and proclaiming alternatives—actions. Clearly\, Isaiah’s words pierced the artist’s heart: “Seek justice\, relieve the oppressed.” \n And we see Landau’s struggle in his quest as a citizen of our world and as an artist in a series of sketches and preparatory drawings for his portrait of Malachi as well as those of Amos\, Hosea\, and Jeremiah. We are also given an image of a world without justice\, Ezekiel’s Vison of Dry Bones\, and a glimpse of a promised new world to come\, New Jerusalem. \n  \n

Showcasing a range of visual art practices\, including performative\, experiential\, social\, and pedagogical\, Do You Know Where Your Art Comes From? investigates current and future models of art organizing. \nTransformer is a Washington DC based arts organization that develops multi-faceted exhibition and program platforms to advance emerging contemporary artists & arts practices. \nVictoria Reis is a curator\, writer\, and arts organizer who has been actively supporting contemporary visual artists and arts organizations within local\, national\, and international contexts since 1991. \nIn 2002\, Reis co-founded Transformer\, an internationally recognized non-profit visual arts organization based in Washington\, DC. Since 2006\, Reis has been leading Transformer as its Executive & Artistic Director\, curating and presenting substantial exhibitions and programs in support of emerging artists\, innovative cultural production\, and new & best practices within contemporary visual art. Reis has established comprehensive cultural partnerships & collaborations with an extensive range of arts\, educational\, and diplomatic organizations and institutions. She has launched and advanced the careers of several hundred artists. \nIn May 2017\, Reis expanded Transformer’s programming to include Siren Arts\, an Asbury Park\, NJ based summer residency program for emerging visual artists working within the performance art discipline. Siren Arts will be presenting its 7th season of programming summer 2023. Reis is a Founding Member of Common Field\, a national network of art spaces and artist-led initiatives. She has been a member of ArtTable since 2000. In 2018\, she joined the Board of Directors of Monmouth Arts\, a non-profit arts organization supporting artists and arts organizations throughout Monmouth County\, NJ.
