DESCRIPTION:Karen Bright: Throughline is an exhibition spanning 40 years of visual work by Karen Bright\, Professor from the Department of Art and Design. Bright’s environmentally focused themes serve as the main thread over the 30 year span with consistent narratives on global warming\, and climate change. Additional themes in Bright’s work relate to the MeToo movement\, prevalent social and cultural issues\, and current politics—all rendered as sculptures and paintings using encaustic-based materials.

SUMMARY:Woodstock & Beyond: The Visionary Art of Mike Frankel
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of photographs by artist/photographer\, Mike Frankel that capture many of the historic milestones in rock history including; the first ever appearance of Led Zeppelin in New York City and the Who’s first New York City performance of Tommy\, along with photographs from the stage at Woodstock. The images have been scanned and printed directly from the 35 mm transparencies. The finished 35 mm slides were composed and exposed with up to 10 images on one frame of film while the action never stopped. There are some compelling single image photographs in the exhibition\, but the multiple image photographs vividly demonstrate the power and dynamism of the rock ‘n’ roll experience.

Told through photographs and guitar technique demonstrations Jimy Bleu focuses on Hendrix’ rise to super-stardom\, his tremendous impact on Popular and ‘serious music’\, his indefinable musical style\, his virtually unknown potential as a spiritual leader and his political awakening which coincided with the turbulent times of that era in the United States. Bleu’s research\, documentation and musical illustrations stand alone in presenting the most comprehensive and at times unheard viewpoints and topics about this remarkable musician. Learn why almost 50 years after his death the iconic Jimi Hendrix is still incredibly relevant and named “The Greatest Guitarist of All Time”! \nLeonard J. Eisenberg tells the story of Jimi Hendrix through photos taken by him at three concerts in the 1960’s and recently published in his book “Photographing Jimi Hendrix.” In 1968 Leonard was three feet away from the guitar god at The Boston Garden allowing him an unprecedented point of view. SUMMARY:Woodstock - Director's Cut
DESCRIPTION:The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement\, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It’s more than a chronicle of the hippie movement\, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance\, capturing the spirit of America in transition\, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese)\, director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director’s cut\, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film’s release in 1970. \nThe film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary\, and it’s still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd (“half a million strong”) expresses the human heart of the event\, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses\, to unpredictable weather\, midconcert childbirth\, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then\, of course\, there is the music–a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period\, including Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash\, Canned Heat\, The Who\, Richie Havens\, Joan Baez\, Ten Years After\, Sly & The Family Stone\, Santana\, and many more. Watching this ambitious film\, as the saying goes\, is the next best thing to being there–it’s a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event.

DESCRIPTION:The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University will present An Evening with Tone\, featuring David Sancious\, Ernest “Boom” Carter\, and Gerald Carboy\, hosted by Bob Santelli\, Founding Executive Director of the Grammy Museum\, on Sunday\, October 6\, at 7 p.m. in the Pollak Theater on the university campus. \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nIn 1974 E Street Band keyboards player Sancious and drummer Carter left the group and teamed with Carboy\, a Jersey Shore bass player\, to form the jazz-fusion band Tone. Acclaimed by critics\, Tone’s music expanded the parameters of fusion and featured the extraordinary keyboard work of Sancious. The group’s album\, Transformation: The Speed of Love\, is an acknowledged fusion classic. \n“Tone was one of the great jazz bands from the Jersey Shore\,” said Santelli\, author of Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. “Critics loved the band\, but during the mid-1970’s hype surrounding the release of Born to Run\, Tone didn’t get the attention it deserved from Springsteen fans.” \nSantelli will interview the musicians about Tone\, their years in the Jersey Shore music scene\, and the role Sancious and Carter played in the early days of the E Street Band. The night will conclude with a rare performance by the trio. \nAdditionally\, authors Barry Schneier and Chris Phillips will be on site to sign their book\, Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Roll Future\, published earlier this year. The book features Schneier’s photographs from the legendary performance of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Harvard Square Theatre in 1974. It was that show that was reviewed by future manager Jon Landau\, who wrote\, “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” The band line-up for that Boston show included Sancious and Carter.

SUMMARY:Strange Radio\, Live! Listening to the Deep Connection: Lecture-Performance Transmission with Karen Werner
DESCRIPTION:Strange Radio\, Live! is an immersive lecture-performance in story and sound\, part of an ongoing series of experimental radio narrowcasts and broadcasts about the stranger\, nearness and distance\, forced migration\, displacement\, home\, and the intergenerational transmission of memory. Strange Radio’s point of departure is Holocaust postmemory in Vienna\, Austria\, a sonic portal for sensing experiences of strangers and strangeness in multiple unfolding contexts across the globe. Strange Radio\, Live! weaves together personal documentary; disembodied voices and sounds separated from points of origin; fragile signals transmitted through radios and embodied reflections on memory\, place\, time\, and radio—itself a strange medium. Postmemories bounce against histories\, sometimes buried and inaudible\, in new locations. Tuned into both utopian longings and wounds\, Strange Radio is a fragile signal\, a love song to radio as a medium\, metaphor\, and method of deep listening together. \nKaren Werner is an award-winning radio artist\, audio storyteller\, and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe\, North America\, Australia\, and Israel. They have also been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018\, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier\, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus\,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner is a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and was a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice.  She is on the faculty of the BFA in Socially Engaged Art Program at Goddard College in Vermont. \nWerner’s work can be seen at: KarenWerner.net
