DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2019 film\, Atlantics. \nAtlantics (French: Atlantique) is a internationally co-produced supernatural romantic drama film directed by Mati Diop\, in her feature directorial debut. It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Diop made history when the film premiered at Cannes\, becoming the first Black woman to direct a film featured in competition at the festival. \nThe film is centered around a young woman\, Ada\, and her partner\, Souleiman\, struggling in the face of employment\, class\, migration\, crime\, family struggles\, and ghosts. Working mostly with unknown actors\, Diop focused in the film on issues such as the refugee crisis\, remorse\, loss\, grief\, class struggle\, and taking responsibility (or not) of one’s actions. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese)\, director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director’s cut\, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film’s release in 1970. \nThe film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary\, and it’s still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd (“half a million strong”) expresses the human heart of the event\, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses\, to unpredictable weather\, midconcert childbirth\, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then\, of course\, there is the music–a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period\, including Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash\, Canned Heat\, The Who\, Richie Havens\, Joan Baez\, Ten Years After\, Sly & The Family Stone\, Santana\, and many more. Watching this ambitious film\, as the saying goes\, is the next best thing to being there–it’s a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of drawings on napkins and new works by Vincent DiMattio. DiMattio earned his MFA from Southern Illinois University and his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He joined Monmouth University’s faculty in 1968 where he served as the department chair for 13 years and as gallery director for more than 20 years. He has shown his work internationally in Madrid\, Spain; San Juan\, Puerto Rico and Pueblo\, Mexico. He has also exhibited throughout the United States\, and at both the Newark and Trenton Museums.

DESCRIPTION:Klimt & Schiele: Eros and Psyche\, recounts the start of the Vienna Secession\, a magical art movement formed in the late 1890’s for art\, literature and music\, in which new ideas are circulated\, Freud discovers the drives of the psyche\, and women begin to claim their independence. It was a movement that marked a new era outside the confines of academic tradition. \nAt the heart of Secession were artists Gustav Klimt and his protégé and dear friend Egon Schiele. This exhibition proves an in-depth examination fo images of extraordinary visual power: from the eroticism of Klimt’s mosaic-like works\, to the anguished and raw work of the young Schiele in his magnetic nudes and contorted figures against the backdrop of nocturnal Vienna\, full of masked balls and dreams imbued with sexuality.

DESCRIPTION:The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory\, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio\, the first in the world\, in West Orange\, NJ. Now in its 38th year\, the festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium\, an independent non-profit organization in residence at New Jersey City University’s Department of Media Arts. Unlike other major film festivals\, the Black Maria Festival is not presented in only one location.
