DESCRIPTION:Rama\, a literature professor and novelist\, travels from Paris to Saint-Omer to observe the trial of Laurence Coly and write about the case. Coly is a student and Senegalese immigrant accused of leaving her 15-month-old daughter on a beach to be swept away by the tide in Berck. Rama\, who is four-months pregnant and\, like Coly\, is in a mixed-race relationship and has a complex relationship with her own Senegalese immigrant mother\, feels a personal connection to Coly. She plans to write a modern day retelling of the Greek Medea myth about the case. As she learns more about Coly’s life and the isolation Coly experienced from her family and society while living in France\, Rama becomes increasingly anxious about her own life and pregnancy. \nThere will be a post screening Q&A hosted by Marina Vujnovic with special guest speaker Prof. Julius Adekunle.

At Princeton University she curated the critically acclaimed archival exhibition Toni Morrison: Sites of Memory\, which brought over 150 never seen original archival objects into view. She is currently at work on two book projects that focus on Morrison: “The Wanderer: Toni Morrison and the Art of Creativity” and “Sites of Memory: Toni Morrison and the Politics of the Archive”.

SUMMARY:A Bronx Tale: The One Man Show starring Chazz Palminteri
DESCRIPTION:Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri wrote A Bronx Tale in 1988. The powerful one-man stage play depicted his bruising childhood which included witnessing a gangland killing when he was nine years old. \nPalminteri played 18 characters and brought them all to life in his autobiographical play. His friends\, enemies and family came alive on stage. Hollywood Studios went crazy after seeing it and offered him millions of dollars to turn it into a major movie. There was one catch. They wanted to put a star in the role of Sonny and someone else to write the screenplay. With $200 dollars in the bank…Palminteri said No… he would hold out and wait. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. Then one night Palminteri walked into his dressing room and sitting there was Robert De Niro who just saw the show.  Robert DeNiro gave Palminteri the chance he was waiting for; and as they say in Hollywood the rest is history. \nPalminteri wrote the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale and then most recently wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It was the first time in history that the same actor wrote the one-man play\, the movie\, and the Broadway Musical and starred in each one. \nIn the past 35 years\, Chazz has appeared in over 60 films.  To name a few – The Usual Suspects\, Analyze This\, Mulholland Falls\, Jade\, Guide to Recognizing Your Saints\, Legend\, and Bullets over Broadway\, which he was nominated for an Academy Award.  He has starred in over 20 television series and has won 3 Emmy’s. Chazz is most recently seen in Modern Family\, Godfather of Harlem\, Law & Order and Gravesend.

The webinar will assemble an international group of experts to explore the progress\, as well as the failures\, toward addressing plastic pollution on a global scale while assessing its various implications. \n\n\n\nKey points of action include identifying and addressing the stumbling blocks to treaty adoption\, considering the implications of addressing the entire plastics life cycle\, ensuring national commitments and transparency\, forming explicit guidelines for establishing baselines\, addressing international trade measures\, respecting Indigenous rights and knowledge systems\, and ensuring a science-based approach while endorsing a living treaty. \n\n\n\nPanelists will include: Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution Executive Secretary Jyoti Mathur-Filipp; Monterey Bay Aquarium Chief Conservation and Science Officer Margaret Spring; Ocean Voices Programme Head of Science Policy Research Marjo Vierros; and Center for International Environmental Law Senior Legal Campaigner (Upstream Plastics Treaty) Daniela Durán. Prior to this assignment\, she served as director at the secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. She has held key roles in inter-governmental processes\, leading the work on the new global biodiversity framework. With over 25 years of experience in international environmental diplomacy\, she possesses extensive knowledge in environment\, climate\, and sustainable development networks. She began her career with UNDP and managed groundbreaking partnerships. Her diverse roles include consulting for UNFCCC and senior advisory positions at UNDP. Mathur-Filipp holds an MS and MBA and is an alumnus of esteemed educational institutions. \n\n\nMargaret Spring\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret Spring joined the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 2013 to oversee its many conservation and science initiatives\, including all ocean science policy work\, the Seafood Watch sustainable seafood initiative and conservation research programs\, including MBARI. From 2009 to 2013\, she held leadership roles at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, first as chief of staff and then as principal deputy undersecretary for oceans and atmosphere. Prior to her tenure in the Obama Administration\, Margaret led The Nature Conservancy’s California coastal and marine program. From 1999 to 2007\, she served on Capitol Hill as senior counsel\, then general counsel\, to the Senate Committee on Commerce\, Science\, and Transportation\, where she advised members of Congress on ocean and climate issues and helped develop legislation on major science and policy topics. She is a graduate of Duke University Law School and Dartmouth College. \n\n\nMarjo Vierros\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarjo Vierros is the Ocean Voices Programme’s director of coastal policy and humanities research\, which undertakes interdisciplinary research on oceans issues. She is also a senior associate with the Global Oceans Forum and a Research Associate with the University of British Columbia Nereus Program. Previously she coordinated the Global Marine Governance Project at United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability and undertook research with its Traditional Knowledge Initiative. With degrees in biology\, oceanography and marine biology\, her career has included work with research\, conservation and United Nations organizations in countries in the Caribbean\, North and Central America\, Bermuda and the Pacific. Her research interests include ocean governance and marine biocultural diversity. \n\n\nDaniela Durán\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniela Durán is a senior legal campaigner focused on the upstream parts of the plastics treaty for the Center for International Environmental Law’s Environmental Health program. She is a Colombian campaigner\, with relevant experience influencing national and international plastic policy. She worked as a public policy specialist for The Nature Conservancy\, where she helped enhance the voices of Indigenous Peoples in international climate policy. She also served as a policy advocacy manager for MarViva Foundation\, where she co-drafted and advocated for the approval of Colombia’s first law to reduce single-use plastic production. Daniela holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Rosario University in Colombia\, and a master’s degree in environment and development from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)\, where she was awarded the Chevening Scholarship for global leaders and researched the frames used for plastic pollution in national policies. \n\n\nModerator Bios\n\nTony MacDonald\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTony MacDonald is director of the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute (UCI). He was previously the executive director of the Coastal States Organization (CSO) from 1998-2005. CSO\, based in Washington\, DC\, represents the interests of the governors of the nation’s 35 coastal states and territories on coastal and ocean policy matters. Prior to joining CSO\, Tony was the special counsel and director of environmental affairs at the American Association of Port Authorities\, where he represented the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) at the International Maritime Organization on negotiations on the London Convention. Wilentz\, George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History at Princeton University\, will present “‘I Don’t Write Protest Songs’: Bob Dylan\, 1963.” \n\nAs Wilentz notes\, “To this day\, Bob Dylan’s early work gets tagged as political or topical or protest music\, despite his own protests about it. He has always refused to be categorized as a protest singer or a political spokesman or anything else other than a songwriter and performer. ‘I don’t write protest songs\,’ he declared to the audience at a Monday night hootenanny at Gerde’s Folk City in 1962. Yet that renunciation served as Dylan’s introduction to his first-ever public performance of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind\,’ a song that within months would become an anthem of the burgeoning civil rights movement. Although he spoke only for himself\, the shifting politics of Dylan’s early output expressed a strong point of view that was essential to his emergence in Greenwich Village\, perhaps the most rapid leap into genius of any artist in modern times. That development accelerated early in 1963\, led to an extraordinary burst of creativity beginning in the middle of the year\, and culminated in a landmark concert at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 26\, the end of the beginning of Dylan’s long career.” \n\nWilentz’s lecture\, drawing on rare and in some cases uncirculated recordings from the time\, will assess the tension and energies behind this exceptional formative period in Dylan’s art. DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s Summer Music and Arts festival is now in its third season—and its first as an in-person event – is taking place on Saturday\, July 9th in the theatres and galleries across campus. With family-friendly programming\, student performances\, a visual arts exhibit and an eclectic evening concert – there truly is something for everyone to enjoy. \nFestival Schedule: \n\nBlue Hawk House Band\nWoods Theatre | 4:00 PM\nTickets: $20\, Children are FREE (must be accompanied by paying adult)\n \nFollowing the Garden State Philharmonic\, Monmouth University’s very own Blue Hawk House Band\, who has been entertaining folks virtually throughout the pandemic monthly during Tuesday Night Record Club\, will make their live debut. These talented students put their very own spin on rock and pop classics. \n\nPoetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats\nPollak Theatre | 7:00 PM\nTickets: $38-$50 \nFinally\, the festival will conclude with a capstone evening of Poetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats featuring – Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise’s hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp\, New Jersey native and former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s “PoemJazz” with a reading and performance of poems in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. Also featured on the evening’s bill are the Digba Ogunbiyi Quartet playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in Ogunbiyi’s Nigeria roots\, yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz; and an opening set by Gregory Schwartz\, former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award. \n\nFront Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul\nPollak and DiMattio Galleries\n10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\nFree and open to the public\n\nThroughout the day\, participants are invited to view the iconic photographs of Larry Hulst in the exhibition Front Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul on display in Pollak and Ice House Galleries. From Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to David Bowie and Lauryn Hill the exhibit brings together over 70 images of legendary musicians and singers across three genres showcasing a unique visual anthology of rock\, blues\, and soul music from 1970–1999. The exhibition will run through July 15.\n\nThe Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival is designed to provide Monmouth County communities and beyond\, along with the students\, faculty\, and staff at Monmouth University\, with the opportunity to enjoy a top-flight music and arts event each summer.

SUMMARY:Robert Klein
DESCRIPTION:Robert Klein is a pioneer in modern stand-up comedy who has inspired heavyweights like Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. For more than forty years\, he has entertained audiences\, and he continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy\, on Broadway\, on television\, and in film. Born in the Bronx\, he was a member of the famed “Second City” theatrical troupe in Chicago. Robert has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards for “Best Comedy Album of the Year” for his albums “Child of the Fifties” and “Mind Over Matter.” \nIn 1975\, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on Home Box Office. He has gone on to do nine one-man shows for HBO and received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics in 2001 for Robert Klein: “Child in His 50’s.” \nHis most recent special for HBO\, “Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced”  earned him a second Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Currently\, he can be seen on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\,” where he is a show favorite\, and on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” \nOpening Act: Max Adolf ’22 & Jenaé Louis-Jacques ’23
