DESCRIPTION:Racial Healing: Practical Activities to Help You Explore Racial Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing \nIn this session\, Anneliese Singh describes core racial healing strategies that people can practice in the aim of collective racial justice and liberation. In doing so\, Singh invites people to explore their own racial healing so they can build stronger relationships across multiple races/ethnicities to identify and transform structural racism within institutional settings. \nAnneliese Singh\, Ph.D.\, LPC (she/they) is a professor and chief diversity officer/associate provost for Diversity and Faculty Development at Tulane University. Her scholarship and community organizing explores the resilience\, trauma\, and identity development experiences of queer and trans people\, with a focus on young people and BIPOC people. Anneliese is the author of “The Racial Healing Handbook: Practical Activities to Help You Challenge Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing” and “The Queer and Trans Resilience Workbook.” Anneliese is co-founder of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition and the Trans Resilience Project. An assistant professor at Harvard and author of The Privileged Poor\, Jack—once a low-income\, first-generation college student himself—studies how poor students are often failed by the top schools that admit them. DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Institute for Global Understanding (IGU) and Urban Coast Institute (UCI) will host the virtual panel discussion “Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Ocean Justice” on March 9. The event is this year’s first installment of the Global Ocean Governance Lecture Series\, which assembles international experts to discuss scientific and policy issues that hold important implications for coastal and marine ecosystems. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Randall Abate\, director of the IGU\, and include the following presentations and speakers: \n\n“From Accounting for\, to Accountability to: Reciprocity and Restitution in Collaborative Climate Change Research” by Monica Barra\, assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of the Earth\, Ocean & Environment and Department of Anthropology\n“Environmental Justice Impacts of Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution” by Juliano Calil\, senior fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy and adjunct professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies\n“Preparing the Prospective NOAA-Mission Workforce for a More Just Future” by Sharmini Pitter\, assistant director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems\n\nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will be invited to take part in a Q&A with the panel. DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s 6th annual Student Scholarship Week: Celebrating the Research\, Creative\, and Service Accomplishments of MU Students will take place virtually April 19-23\, 2021. Student Scholarship Week is a weeklong conference that showcases and celebrates students’ academic work inside and outside of the classroom\, as well as highlights faculty-student collaboration\, across the University. This includes highlighting students’ scholarly contributions in research\, writing\, service learning\, clinical experiences (i.e. study abroad\, internships)\, musical and theater productions\, art exhibits\, student development and leadership\, student clubs\, etc. \nThis year\, Student Scholarship Week will be held virtually for the safety of our students and staff. SUMMARY:Policing in Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation on Police Violence\, Black Lives Matter\, and Police Reform. \nPanelists\n\n\nLorenzo M. Boyd\, Ph.D.\, is a nationally recognized leader in police-community relations and an authority on urban policing. Boyd is the vice president for diversity & inclusion at the University of New Haven. As the former director of the Center for Advanced Policing and a life member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE)\, Boyd has appeared on local\, regional\, and national media outlets to discuss policing in the aftermath of high-profile cases. \n\n\n\nJason Williams\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor of justice studies at Montclair State University. He is a passionate activist criminologist deeply concerned about racial disparity and mistreatment within the criminal legal system. Williams has conducted ethnographic research in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and Ferguson\, Missouri\, following the police-involved tragedies of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. He recently published a co-edited book entitled Black Males and the Criminal Justice System. \n\n\n\nSean K. Wilson\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at William Paterson University. As a community-based scholar\, Wilson’s research seeks to foreground the voices and lived experiences of the oppressed and marginalized. His research interests include reentry\, critical policing\, critical criminology\,reentry\, critical gang studies\, and race and justice. \n\n\n\nAndrea McChristian\, Esq.\, is the law and policy director at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. In this capacity\, she leads the implementation of the strategic vision and the director of the law and policy program. Andrea oversees the programmatic function of the institute’s three pillars of social justice: democracy and justice\, economic justice\, and criminal justice reform. SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING & FACULTY	LED DISCUSSION: REBIRTH OF A NATION BY PAUL D. MILLER AKA DJ SPOOKY
DESCRIPTION:To create his film Rebirth of a Nation\, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky\, remixed D.W. Griffith’s 1915 epic film The Birth of a Nation. His re-telling of this overtly racist story depicted in the Reconstruction-era United States hurtles Griffith’s images into the 21st century. The original film was based on a novel and theater play by Thomas Dixon entitled. By applying DJ technique to cinema\, Miller’s new film parallels\, deconstructs and remixes the original. He likes to think of it as “film as found object” in the same sense that artists such as Marcel Duchamp\, Jeff Koons\, Andy Warhol and David Hammons\, among many others\, have fostered creative investigations into the idea of found objects\, cinema and “appropriation art.” \nThe event will feature a discussion led by Monmouth faculty from a variety of disciplines. Including: Johanna Foster (Sociology)\, Walter Greason (History)\, Mark Ludak (Photography) and Brook Nappi (Anthropology). The first half of the film will screen starting at 4:30 p.m. Faculty will lead a discussion in the middle of the event\, and the second half of the film will follow until 6:45 p.m. \nPaul D. Miller\, aka DJ Spooky\, is an established composer\, multimedia artist\, and author. He travels around the world performing solo\, with chamber groups\, and with orchestras\, while giving talks at prominent universities\, museums\, and conferences. His DJ Mixer app has seen more than 12 million downloads and in 2012- 2013 he was the first artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He is also the executive editor of ORIGIN Magazine. He’s produced and composed work for Yoko Ono\, Thurston Moore\, and scores of artists and award-winning films. Miller’s work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne\, Germany; Kunsthalle\, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; and many other museums and galleries. He has been featured everywhere from CNN to SyFy. His new book The Imaginary App\, published by MIT Press\, was released in 2014. National Geographic named Miller a National Geographic Emerging Explorer for 2014/2015. \nNOTE: Miller will not be present for this event.
