SUMMARY:SONGWRITERS BY THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters\nJoe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by\nthe Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small\ncoffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that\nfeatures some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features\n \n\nJames Maddock\, a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene and expatriate Irish writer and musician Larry Kirwan. \nAn April 2014 review in Relix Magazine puts it this way: “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately\, he doesn’t need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery.” After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood\, whose debut Songs From Stamford Hill was featured prominently on TV shows such as “Dawson’s Creek\,” Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album\, while follow-up Wake Up And Dream ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV’s (NYC) Listener Poll. He has performed with Bruce Springsteen\, Willie Nile\, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). \nLarry Kirwan\n(born in Wexford\, Ireland) is an expatriate Irish writer and musician\, most\nnoted as the lead singer for the New York-based Irish rock band\, Black 47 Kirwan has also written\nand produced eleven plays and musicals\, some of which have been performed in\nthe United States and Europe. The plays deal mainly with Irish history and\npolitics.   \nMonmouth University Blue Hawk Records’ artists Julia Whary\, Nicole Govel\, and guest Isabella Rose\, will open the show.Sponsored by the Leon Hess Business School and Business Council

SUMMARY:Intro to Celtic Music Workshop with Switchback
DESCRIPTION:Attendees are presented with traditional pieces of Irish music\, folklore and dance. Following the historic time-line of Irish emigration to the United States\, participants are made aware of the evolution of Irish music\, once immigrants reached America. They will  listen to the transformation of Irish music into today’s western\, jazz and bluegrass. The resurgence of Irish music\, dance and culture are also examined. \nBrian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack of Switchback have been playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana music at sold-out concert halls\, performing arts centers and festivals for over 20 years. Featuring a mix of Irish music and original songs\, their concerts have been described as “breathtaking scenery for your ears.” With a mix of mandolin\, guitar\, and bass their harmonies have won comparisons to the Louvin Brothers\, the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. \nHeld in conjunction with the concert featuring Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill with Switchback on April 22 at 8 PM in Pollak Theatre

SUMMARY:Willie Nile and Anthony D'Amato join Songwriters By The Sea
DESCRIPTION:Songwriters By The Sea hosts\, and accomplished New Jersey songwriters\, Joe D’Urso and Joe Rapolla\, bring their popular songwriters series to the historic Lauren K. Woods Theater. SUMMARY:Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:Urinetown March 4 – 8; March 10 – 12\, 2015Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nFrom an American town in the early 20th century\, we flash forward to a future dystopia where a severe water shortage has made public pay-per-use toilets a legal necessity. Urinetown was a hit Broadway musical in the early 21st century\, running for two and a half years. It won Tony Awards for its composer and lyricists Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis and Mr. Kotis also won for the book of the musical.  The show is a satirical take on social change (the police are represented by Officers Lockstock and Barrel)\, corporate greed (the pay toilets are run by “Urine Good Company”)\, and Broadway musicals themselves. One of the show’s characters – its hero Bobby Strong – was included as one of the 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre.

SUMMARY:Our Town by Thornton Wilder
DESCRIPTION:November 5 – 9 and 12 – 15\, 2014Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nA University-wide production of the classic Pulitzer-Prize winning play by Thornton Wilder\, Our Town tells the universal story of small town America. Though taking place in the first decade of the 20th century and written in 1938\, Our Town has consistently been hailed as a theatrical masterpiece. A New York production won the Tony Award for best revival in 1989 and an off-Broadway presentation in 2009 won accolades from critics and audiences alike and ran for nearly 3 years.  Performed with little scenery and having the character of Stage Manager directly address the audience\, Our Town asks us to consider what is important in life. When Emily wants to relive a day in her life\, she is told “Choose the least important day of your life; it will be important enough.”
