SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Songwriters By The Sea
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guest artists Tom Chapin and Jen Chapin with an intro set by George Wurzbach. The show will also feature Monmouth University student openers. \nIn a career that spans six decades\, 26 albums and three GRAMMY awards\, Hudson Valley Troubadour Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concert performer\, Chapin has acted on Broadway\, as well as working extensively in television\, radio and film. As a music-maker\, the multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has maintained two long and productive parallel careers\, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children’s music. Chapin has established a reputation for insightful\, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances. Chapin’s infectious songs\, sterling musicianship and personal warmth consistently shine through\, whether he’s performing on record or in a concert hall\, an outdoor festival\, a school\, in front of a symphony orchestra or in an intimate coffeehouse. The New York Times called Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” \nJen Chapin has been celebrated for writing “brilliant soulfully poetic urban folk music” (NPR) for almost two decades\, beginning with her debut\, Open Wide\, in 2002. Nurtured in and around NYC by a large family of artists\, writers\, and musicians\, Jen’s “observant\, lyrically deft\, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) songwriting features both her “extraordinary voice” (De krenten uit de pop\, The Netherlands) and “astonishing jazz band” (popmatters). As much as an artistic legacy\, the roots of Jen’s upbringing have inspired her “potent\, jazzy\, layered folk” (Newsday) songs and a lifetime of passionate activism\, through ongoing work with WhyHunger (founded by her late father Harry Chapin)\, and teaching high school global history in Brooklyn. She has performed on stage with Bruce Springsteen\, on bills with Aimee Mann\, Bruce Hornsby\, and The Neville Brothers\, and her rendition of Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” was featured in an episode of the SyFy TV series “Defiance”. Jen Chapin’s 2013 release Reckoning\, produced and engineered by five-time GRAMMY© Winner Kevin Killen (U2\, Elvis Costello\, Kate Bush) was named among the best Americana albums of that year by Examiner.com and awarded First Prize\, Lyrics category by the USA Songwriting Competition (for the song “Go Away”). Her new trio album “Desert or Sea” was released in summer 2019. \nSponsored by the Leon Hess Business School\nAll proceeds benefit the Music Industry Endowed Scholarship

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Gemini
DESCRIPTION:The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani\, a Harvard student\, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale\, Judith and Randy\, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates\, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

SUMMARY:SONGWRITERS BY THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guest Willie Nile. \nThe New York Times called Willie Nile “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years.” His album Streets Of New York was hailed as “a platter for the ages” by UNCUT magazine. Rolling Stone listed The Innocent Ones as one of the “Top Ten Best Under-The-Radar Albums of 2011” and BBC Radio called it “THE rock ‘n’ roll album of the year.” Bono\, Bruce Springsteen\, Pete Townshend\, Lou Reed\, Lucinda Williams\, Jim Jarmusch\, and Little Steven are among those who have sung his praises. His album\, American Ride\, won “Best Rock Album of the Year” at the Independent Music Awards. Willie has toured across the U.S. with The Who and has sung with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. As the induction program from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame says: “His live performances are legendary.” In the summer of 2017 Willie Nile released his 11th studio album Positively Bob – Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan to rave reviews.

SUMMARY:The Doo Wop Project
DESCRIPTION:From Bop to Pop! these five charismatic triple-threats from Broadway’s smash hits\, Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical\, and their hot 5-piece band tear it up with street corner singing for a whole new generation! The show traces the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. DWP takes you on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests\, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influence on the sounds of Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations and The Four Seasons all the way to Michael Jackson\, Jason Mraz and Amy Whitehouse. \nThe Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate — and in some cases entirely reimagine — some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history. Enjoy a night filled with harmonies and classic ‘60s hits such as Dion and the Belmonts’ I Wonder Why\, Thurston Harris’ Little Bitty Pretty One\, The Del-Vikings Come and Go With Me\, The Capris’ Morse Code of Love and many more. Fun for the entire family\, the show also includes doo-wop-inspired renditions of contemporary songs such as Amy Winehouse’s Valerie\, Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel and Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours. \nWebsite: www.thedoowopproject.com

SUMMARY:You’re A Good Man\, Charlie Brown
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 6/23: 2pm & 8pm;  6/24: 2pm & 8pm;  6/25: 3pm;  6/30: 2pm & 8pm;  7/1: 2pm & 8pm; 7/2: 3pm \nShadow Lawn Stage\, the professional theatre of Monmouth University\, will present the 50th anniversary production of the enchanting musical\, You’re A Good Man\, Charlie Brown this June with 10 performances at the historic Woods Theatre on the university’s campus. Based on the famed comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles Schulz\, the musical tells the story of some typical days in the life of Charlie Brown. From running after the school bus to spying the cute little red-haired girl at lunch\, Charlie deals with the fun and frustrations of life with his friends Lucy\, Linus and Schroeder; his kid sister Sally; and his faithful companion\, Snoopy. The original production featured Gary Burghoff (Radar in the MASH series). The 1999 revival won 2 Tony Awards – for Roger Bart as Snoopy and Kristen Chenoweth as Sally –  and the Drama Desk award for “Best Revival of a Musical”. \nThe songs of the show\, written by Clark Gesner\, reveal the dreams and goals of the characters: Lucy explores her feelings for Schroeder while he plays Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” (“it’s always been my dream that I’d marry a man that plays the piano”); Linus sings and dances with his security blanket in “My Blanket and Me”\, and even Snoopy sings the praises of his favorite time of day in “Suppertime!”  For the revival\, Andrew Lippa added a new song that had Sally searching for “A New Philosophy” (is it “Why are you telling me?” or “I can’t stand it!”?)  As the day comes to a close\, the whole gang reflects on the things that bring them “Happiness”.Directed by Maurice J. Moran\, the Shadow Lawn production features a range of actors: professional members of Actors’ Equity Association\, MU students and alumni\, and new rising stars.
