SUMMARY:Los Lobos
DESCRIPTION:The journey of Los Lobos began in 1973\, 50 years ago this year\, when David Hidalgo (vocals\, guitar\, and pretty much anything with strings)\, Louie Perez (drums\, vocals\, guitar)\, Cesar Rosas (vocals\, guitar)\, and Conrad Lozano (bass\, vocals\, guitarrón) earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes. They were soon sharing bills with bands like the Circle Jerks\, Public Image Ltd. and the Blasters\, whose saxophonist\, Steve Berlin\, would eventually leave the group to join Los Lobos in 1984. \nEarly on\, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success\, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for “Anselma” from its 1983 EP …And a Time to Dance. A year later\, the group released its full-length\, major-label debut\, How Will the Wolf Survive? Co-produced by Berlin and T Bone Burnett\, the album was a college rock sensation that helped Los Lobos tie with Bruce Springsteen as Rolling Stone’s Artist of the Year. \nA major turning point came in 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic\, La Bamba. The quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S. and the U.K. Rather than capitalize on that massive commercial success\, Los Lobos instead chose to record La Pistola y El Corazón\, a tribute to Tejano and Mariachi music that won the 1989 Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance. \nThat kind of sharp artistic turn has become Los Lobos’ trademark\, serving to both fuel the band’s creativity and keep its fans engaged. In 1992\, that willingness to defy expectations led them to record Kiko\, an adventurous album produced by Mitchell Froom that’s considered by many to be one the band’s very best. \nSince then\, Los Lobos has continued to deliver daring and diverse albums such as Colossal Head (1996)\, Good Morning Aztlán (2002)\, The Town and the City (2006)\, Tin Can Trust (2010) and Gates of Gold (2015). On top of that\, the band’s live shows never disappoint\, as documented on the recent concert recordings Live at the Fillmore (2005) and Disconnected in New York City (2013). Through the years\, they’ve managed to keep things interesting with unexpected side trips like an album of Disney songs in 2009\, along with countless contributions to tribute albums and film soundtracks. One of those – “Mariachi Suite” from the 1995 film Desperado ­– earned the band a Grammy® for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Los Lobos’ love letter to the city of Los Angeles as their album Native Sons (2021)\, returned the band to the Grammy winner’s circle with Best Americana Album of 2022. In 2023\, Los Lobos celebrates its 50th anniversary as a band\, a rare and impressive feat\, as the band continues its great legacy. \nLos Lobos has sold millions of records\, won prestigious awards and made fans around the world. But perhaps its most lasting impact will be how well its music embodies the idea of America as a cultural melting pot. SUMMARY:Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn
DESCRIPTION:Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn\, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine)\, have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a fifteen-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres\, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds.   The two met at a square dance\, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years\, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here\, a benefit there\, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla & Abigail would begin making music together as a duo. \nFleck has the virtuosic\, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His collaborations range from his ground-breaking standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments.   From writing concertos for full symphony orchestra\, exploring the banjo’s African roots\, to jazz duos with Chick Corea\, many tout that Béla Fleck is the world’s premier banjo player.  Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern\, old-time singer-songwriter who has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums. DESCRIPTION:As a co-founder of The Byrds\, Roger McGuinn is firmly established as an indisputable industry icon. From his signature 12-string Rickenbacker sound\, to his instantly recognizable vocals on hits like Turn\, Turn\, Turn\, Eight Miles High and Mr. Tambourine Man\, Roger McGuinn didn’t just make music; he made history. \n \nRoger McGuinn was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scenes when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds\, Roger toured and performed with the Limeliters\, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director on Judy Collins #3. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of an evening of Poetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats featuring – Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise’s hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp\, New Jersey native and former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s “PoemJazz” with a reading and performance of poems in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. Also featured on the evening’s bill are the Digba Ogunbiyi Quartet playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in Ogunbiyi’s Nigeria roots\, yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz; and an opening set by Gregory Schwartz\, former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award. \nThis event is part of the Monmouth University Summer Music and Arts Festival 2022. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\nKuf Knotz and Christine Elise\nSince the 2018 release of “Higher Grounds\,” their first album\, Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise have brought their unique blend of hip-hop\, soul and classical traditions to various communities. Releasing their highly anticipated second album “Ké m yōōnədé” (2021)\, Kuf and Christine’s music explores themes of unity\, spirituality and the infinite possibility of creating a better world. They fuse hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp. And\, you can dance to it. They recently have been featured on NPR Music and WHYY.  Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise offer motivational creative arts workshops and performances at various settings such as hospitals\, schools and community centers. Their mission is to use the power of music\, personal experience and empathetic relation to help individuals grow to meet their fullest potential. \nRobert Pinsky\nNew Jersey native Robert Pinsky (United States Poet Laureate 1997-2000) has devised a collaborative program which showcases his two great passions: poetry and jazz. Pinsky presents the human voice — the reading and performance of poems – in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. In PoemJazz\, Pinsky’s rich and textured voice takes on a role like that of a horn or wind instrument in conversation with melody and rhythm\, creating an exchange between the sounds of poetry and of music. “In jazz\, as in poetry\,” says Robert Pinsky\, “there is always that play between what’s regular and what’s wild. That has always appealed to me.”  Robert Pinsky has performed with Grammy-winning pianist Laurance Hobgood and other celebrated jazz musicians\, including Vijay Iyer\, Ben Allison\, Bobby Bradford\, and Stan Strickland. \nDigba Ogunbiyi Quartet\nThe Digba Ogunbiyi quartet is a musical group that consists of Drummer Chris Paredes\, Bassist Bill Moring\, Alto saxophonist Jalin Shiver and pianist Digba Ogunbiyi. The quartet which is led by Digba Ogunbiyi started while he was a student at the New Jersey City University. As a pianist from Nigeria\, he is obsessed with exploring sounds that are informed by his childhood experiences in Lagos. This is evident in his 2020 debut album “Ade’digba” which has been described as a “sound of hope for the African jazz community. ”With his quartet\, Digba stretches the boundaries of genre often playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in his roots yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz. \nGregory Schwartz\nGregory Schwartz\, a former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award (2007)\, has been a resident poet at the MC Skate & Surf Break contest and the 2010 Bamboozle Festival. He has also been featured on the front page of the Asbury Park Press (2002\, 2009\, 2012)\, appeared in Steve Forbert’s music video “Sandy” and is a writer for Asbury Park Vibes.

These talented students put their very own spin on rock and pop classics. \n\nPoetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats\nPollak Theatre | 7:00 PM\nTickets: $38-$50 \nFinally\, the festival will conclude with a capstone evening of Poetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats featuring – Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise’s hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp\, New Jersey native and former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s “PoemJazz” with a reading and performance of poems in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. Also featured on the evening’s bill are the Digba Ogunbiyi Quartet playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in Ogunbiyi’s Nigeria roots\, yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz; and an opening set by Gregory Schwartz\, former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award. \n\nFront Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul\nPollak and DiMattio Galleries\n10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\nFree and open to the public\n\nThroughout the day\, participants are invited to view the iconic photographs of Larry Hulst in the exhibition Front Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul on display in Pollak and Ice House Galleries. From Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to David Bowie and Lauryn Hill the exhibit brings together over 70 images of legendary musicians and singers across three genres showcasing a unique visual anthology of rock\, blues\, and soul music from 1970–1999. DESCRIPTION:Robert Klein is a pioneer in modern stand-up comedy who has inspired heavyweights like Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. For more than forty years\, he has entertained audiences\, and he continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy\, on Broadway\, on television\, and in film. Born in the Bronx\, he was a member of the famed “Second City” theatrical troupe in Chicago. Robert has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards for “Best Comedy Album of the Year” for his albums “Child of the Fifties” and “Mind Over Matter.” \nIn 1975\, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on Home Box Office. He has gone on to do nine one-man shows for HBO and received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics in 2001 for Robert Klein: “Child in His 50’s.” \nHis most recent special for HBO\, “Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced”  earned him a second Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). DESCRIPTION:Entering its 2nd year on the virtual stage\, this year’s Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival will feature members of the Garden State Philharmonic performing music from Civil War era Marches through Ragtime\, Dixieland\, and Jazz featuring music by composers George Gershwin\, Scott Joplin\, C.W. Handy\, Duke Ellington\, and Louis Armstrong. The festival will also highlight selections and solos from The Monmouth University Chamber Choir\, a performance by the Blue Hawk House Band and a special reading by former United States Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Tretheway. The festival will premiere at 7:00 PM on July 1st and be available to view through July 31st. Croce Performing a Retrospective of his 30-Year Career\nA.J. Croce brings his touring band to the stage with him to perform music from his ten studio albums of roots music ranging from Blues and Jazz to Rock and Roll and Soul\, including covers from the new album. This performance will include a variety of originals from albums like That’s Me in the Bar\, Twelve Tales\, and Just Like Medicine.

SUMMARY:Virtual Blue Hawk Records Release Show for “Reviver"
DESCRIPTION:With the ever-changing\, and at times frightening outside world\, there is one thing that’s for certain: nothing can stop the music. Blue Hawk Records has been grinding to perfect their seventeenth compilation album\, Reviver. Since the start of the fall 2020 semester\, the team has been meeting regularly\, held in-person and virtual auditions\, went into Lakehouse Recording Studio in Asbury Park to record\, mix\, and master the album\, and is set for an upcoming virtual release show. The release show will be held on Instagram live on December 9 starting at 8 pm. The Instagram handle to tune in to is @bluehawkrecordsoffical. \nIncluded are two rappers\, Hasan Chambers and Gabe Garza\, otherwise known as Double G\, both whose songs take the listener through a story-like experience with a moving message. A&R reps Ethan Christensen and Mikey Sacnhez\, helped arrange\, and recorded on\, artist Charlie Krause’s piano-based song “Those Green Eyes”\, giving it a driving full-band sound. Nick Garretch and his band\, White Wing\, contributed a modern day\, fist-pumping\, rock track with “Out All Night”. With the team’s help\, Monmouth freshman and solo singer-songwriter\, Abby Garcia\, took her once acoustic-only song\, “Silver Linings” and added various musical elements to give it a very current and mystical sound. Rapper-Singer\, Justin Ume\, known as UME\, who already has an impressive following\, contributed the hit-sounding pop track\, “At The Tone”. \nThe Live release show will be hosted by one of Monmouth University’s WMCX top DJ’s\, Kayla Booker\, and will feature live performances by our artists. \nYou can find and follow Blue Hawk Records at @bluehawkrecordsofficial \n

Adelphi has partnered with venues across the country to help promote the series and the artists. \nJarrod Spector is best known for his Tony Nominated performance in Beautiful: the Carole King Musical in the role of ‘Barry Mann’. He played ‘Frankie Valli’ for a record 1500 performances in Broadway’s Jersey Boys and was last seen as the iconic ‘Sonny Bono’ in Broadway’s The Cher Show. Kelli Barrett originated the role of ‘Lara Guishar’ in Broadway’s Doctor Zhivago and has also played leading roles in Broadway’s Wicked\, Baby It’s You! and The Royal Family. She was recently lauded for her portrayal as ‘Liza Minnelli’ in the award-winning FX show Fosse/Verdon. \nHitched in 2014\, Barrett & Spector present Funny How It Happens\, an intimate look at the uncanny parallels and fortuitous make-it-or-break-it moments throughout their careers and friendship that eventually brought them together.
