SUMMARY:On A Winter’s Night
DESCRIPTION:Presenting the Reunion Tour of “On A Winter’s Night” from veteran singer-songwriters PATTY LARKIN\, CLIFF EBERHARDT\, JOHN GORKA  and LUCY KAPLANSKY\, that remain among the brightest stars of the singer/songwriter movement for the past three decades. In 1994 Christine Lavin gathered them together\, along with folk and Americana artists to showcase music of the Winter Season on the now-classic On A Winter’s Night CD\, followed by several years of touring collaborations. These artists have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their touring days together. The winter season is again celebrated by these unique and popular performers\, back together by popular demand. \n***It is the artists’ preference that audience members be masked for this show for everyone’s health and safety.*** \nPATTY LARKIN\nShe redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising lyrics and vocals. Acoustic Guitar Magazine hails her\, “soundscape experiments” while Rolling Stone praises her\, “evocative and sonic shading.” She has been described as\, “riveting” (Chicago Tribune)\, “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly)\, and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter). Recently an Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music – and now on the faculty at Fine Arts Work Center – Larkin reflects\, “I have been energized by the poets\, writers\, and artists I have met while teaching\, and find myself on a journey to break down some of the predictable pathways that songs can travel.” Bird in a Cage\, her 14th CD now available\, puts poems from ten notable poets to song\, including US Poet Laureates William Carlos Williams\, Stanley Kunitz\, Kay Ryan\, Robert Pinsky\, and Billy Collins\, for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. Poems are made to be shared aloud\, and with Bird\, Patty takes up that tradition and sets it aglow. \nCLIFF EBERHARDT\nOne of the most original songsmiths currently on tour\, Eberhardt is a highly intelligent\, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening\, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. Like John Hammond and Richie Havens\, Eberhardt continues to carry the torch for traditional and contemporary folk music through his strong live shows. Whether he’s out on tour solo or with a small band\, Eberhardt’s guitar playing\, singing\, and original folk songs and blues make for a compelling\, thought-filled\, emotional roller coaster of a concert. \nJOHN GORKA\nHailed by Rolling Stone as “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement\,” John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 90’s folk scene. Originally from New Jersey\, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem\, PA\, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival\, in 1984\, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings\, I Know. Boston Globe penned Gorka “for the sophisticated intelligence and the provocative originality of his songs.” Recent accolades include 2016’s Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year for Before Beginning (Red House Records). 2018 brought his latest release\, and 14th of his career\, True In Time (Compass Records). True In Time (Compass Records). \nLUCY KAPLANSKY\n“A truly gifted performer…full of enchanting songs” (New York Times). Blending country\, folk and pop styles\, Lucy has the unique ability to make every song sound fresh\, whether singing her own sweet originals\, covering country classics by June Carter Cash and Gram Parsons\, or singing pop favorites by Lennon/McCartney and Nick Lowe. Lucy’s iconic voice has been featured in film and on television\, including commercials like Chevrolet’s iconic “Heartbeat of America” jingle. A Billboard-charting singer and one of the top-selling artists on Red House Records\, she has topped the folk and Americana radio charts and has been featured on shows throughout the world from NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions to BBC Radio to CBS Sunday Morning. One of the most in-demand harmony singers\, Lucy has sung on countless records\, performing with Suzanne Vega\, Bryan Ferry\, Nanci Griffith\, and Shawn Colvin.

SUMMARY:The Mind and Music of George Gershwin - Live Concert Lecture by Dr. Richard Kogan
DESCRIPTION:Listening to the deft integration of jazz rhythms and classical music in Rhapsody in Blue or the often-wrenching songs of Porgy and Bess\, it’s jarring to think of their composer as a troubled youth\, a juvenile delinquent\, petty thief and high school dropout who\, in a latter era\, might have been prescribed a hefty dose of Ritalin or Adderall. But George Gershwin was saved by a school violin recital he’d tried to avoid attending – and it opened a door that allowed him to escape the predictable ignominy of a bad boy on the streets of Brooklyn. He was\, then\, a person reached – and made better – by music. \nDr. Richard Kogan joins us to discuss the life\, psyche and music of one of America’s greatest composers during an evening that integrates masterful piano playing\, humor and insight into the close links between music\, healing and genius. Trained in piano at Juilliard and in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School\, Dr. Kogan is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry\, Co-Director of the Human Sexuality Program at Weill Cornell Medical Center and Artistic Director of the Music and Medicine program. He also maintains a private practice in New York City.

SUMMARY:The Boxmasters - Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2007 by Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew\, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences\, but most importantly\, the rock and roll of the 1960’s. Listening to The Boxmasters\, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles\, Byrds and Beach Boys\, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and Big Star. Since forming The Boxmasters\, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band\, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters\, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration\, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core\, there is a backbeat\, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion. \nAs a touring band\, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top\, Steve Miller\, George Thorogood and Kid Rock The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner\, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”\, Springfield\, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville\, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm’s “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock\, New York were highlight performances for the band\, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015\, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Cowboy Junkies
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes revolutions begin quietly.\n\nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies. \n\nFormed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar\, Margo Timmins on vocals\, Peter Timmins on drums\, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass\, the band has sparkled over the course of 26 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete\,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.”\n\nUnlike most long-lasting groups\, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table\,” says Michael.

SUMMARY:Los Lobos
DESCRIPTION:The journey of Los Lobos began in 1973\, 50 years ago this year\, when David Hidalgo (vocals\, guitar\, and pretty much anything with strings)\, Louie Perez (drums\, vocals\, guitar)\, Cesar Rosas (vocals\, guitar)\, and Conrad Lozano (bass\, vocals\, guitarrón) earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes. They were soon sharing bills with bands like the Circle Jerks\, Public Image Ltd. and the Blasters\, whose saxophonist\, Steve Berlin\, would eventually leave the group to join Los Lobos in 1984. \nEarly on\, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success\, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for “Anselma” from its 1983 EP …And a Time to Dance. A year later\, the group released its full-length\, major-label debut\, How Will the Wolf Survive? Co-produced by Berlin and T Bone Burnett\, the album was a college rock sensation that helped Los Lobos tie with Bruce Springsteen as Rolling Stone’s Artist of the Year. \nA major turning point came in 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic\, La Bamba. The quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S. and the U.K. Rather than capitalize on that massive commercial success\, Los Lobos instead chose to record La Pistola y El Corazón\, a tribute to Tejano and Mariachi music that won the 1989 Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance. \nThat kind of sharp artistic turn has become Los Lobos’ trademark\, serving to both fuel the band’s creativity and keep its fans engaged. In 1992\, that willingness to defy expectations led them to record Kiko\, an adventurous album produced by Mitchell Froom that’s considered by many to be one the band’s very best. \nSince then\, Los Lobos has continued to deliver daring and diverse albums such as Colossal Head (1996)\, Good Morning Aztlán (2002)\, The Town and the City (2006)\, Tin Can Trust (2010) and Gates of Gold (2015). On top of that\, the band’s live shows never disappoint\, as documented on the recent concert recordings Live at the Fillmore (2005) and Disconnected in New York City (2013). Through the years\, they’ve managed to keep things interesting with unexpected side trips like an album of Disney songs in 2009\, along with countless contributions to tribute albums and film soundtracks. One of those – “Mariachi Suite” from the 1995 film Desperado – earned the band a Grammy® for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Los Lobos’ love letter to the city of Los Angeles as their album Native Sons (2021)\, returned the band to the Grammy winner’s circle with Best Americana Album of 2022. In 2023\, Los Lobos celebrates its 50th anniversary as a band\, a rare and impressive feat\, as the band continues its great legacy. \nLos Lobos has sold millions of records\, won prestigious awards and made fans around the world. But perhaps its most lasting impact will be how well its music embodies the idea of America as a cultural melting pot. In it\, styles like son jarocho\, norteño\, Tejano\, folk\, country\, doo-wop\, soul\, R&B\, rock ’n’ roll and punk all come together to create a new sound that’s greater than the sum of its parts. \n \nMore at: https://www.loslobos.org

SUMMARY:Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn
DESCRIPTION:Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn\, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine)\, have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a fifteen-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres\, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds.   The two met at a square dance\, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years\, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here\, a benefit there\, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla & Abigail would begin making music together as a duo. \nFleck has the virtuosic\, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His collaborations range from his ground-breaking standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments.   From writing concertos for full symphony orchestra\, exploring the banjo’s African roots\, to jazz duos with Chick Corea\, many tout that Béla Fleck is the world’s premier banjo player.  Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern\, old-time singer-songwriter who has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums. She has done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China\, presented an original theatrical production\, and has contributed to singular side groups Uncle Earl and The Wu-Force.   In addition to being named a TED Fellow in 2012\, Abigail was recently named the first US-China Fellow at Vanderbilt University\, in addition to Carolina Performing Arts/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s DisTil Fellow for 2018-2020 \nOn stage\, Fleck & Washburn will perform pieces from their Grammy-winning self-titled debut as well as their new record\, Echo in the Valley (Rounder 2017).   With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling the noble instrument from its most familiar arena into new and unique realms\, Bela & Abigail meet in the mean\, head-on\, to present music that feels wildly innovative and familiar at the same time.   Whether at home\, on stage or on record\, their deep bond\, combined with the way their distinct musical personalities and banjo styles interact\, makes theirs a picking partnership unlike any other on the planet. \n \nbelafleck.com\nabigailwashburn.com

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of an evening of Poetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats featuring – Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise’s hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp\, New Jersey native and former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s “PoemJazz” with a reading and performance of poems in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. Also featured on the evening’s bill are the Digba Ogunbiyi Quartet playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in Ogunbiyi’s Nigeria roots\, yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz; and an opening set by Gregory Schwartz\, former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award. \nThis event is part of the Monmouth University Summer Music and Arts Festival 2022. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\nKuf Knotz and Christine Elise\nSince the 2018 release of “Higher Grounds\,” their first album\, Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise have brought their unique blend of hip-hop\, soul and classical traditions to various communities. Releasing their highly anticipated second album “Ké m yōōnədé” (2021)\, Kuf and Christine’s music explores themes of unity\, spirituality and the infinite possibility of creating a better world. They fuse hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp. And\, you can dance to it. They recently have been featured on NPR Music and WHYY.  Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise offer motivational creative arts workshops and performances at various settings such as hospitals\, schools and community centers. Their mission is to use the power of music\, personal experience and empathetic relation to help individuals grow to meet their fullest potential. \nRobert Pinsky\nNew Jersey native Robert Pinsky (United States Poet Laureate 1997-2000) has devised a collaborative program which showcases his two great passions: poetry and jazz. Pinsky presents the human voice — the reading and performance of poems – in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. In PoemJazz\, Pinsky’s rich and textured voice takes on a role like that of a horn or wind instrument in conversation with melody and rhythm\, creating an exchange between the sounds of poetry and of music. “In jazz\, as in poetry\,” says Robert Pinsky\, “there is always that play between what’s regular and what’s wild. That has always appealed to me.”  Robert Pinsky has performed with Grammy-winning pianist Laurance Hobgood and other celebrated jazz musicians\, including Vijay Iyer\, Ben Allison\, Bobby Bradford\, and Stan Strickland. \nDigba Ogunbiyi Quartet\nThe Digba Ogunbiyi quartet is a musical group that consists of Drummer Chris Paredes\, Bassist Bill Moring\, Alto saxophonist Jalin Shiver and pianist Digba Ogunbiyi. The quartet which is led by Digba Ogunbiyi started while he was a student at the New Jersey City University. As a pianist from Nigeria\, he is obsessed with exploring sounds that are informed by his childhood experiences in Lagos. This is evident in his 2020 debut album “Ade’digba” which has been described as a “sound of hope for the African jazz community. ”With his quartet\, Digba stretches the boundaries of genre often playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in his roots yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz. \nGregory Schwartz\nGregory Schwartz\, a former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award (2007)\, has been a resident poet at the MC Skate & Surf Break contest and the 2010 Bamboozle Festival. He has also been featured on the front page of the Asbury Park Press (2002\, 2009\, 2012)\, appeared in Steve Forbert’s music video “Sandy” and is a writer for Asbury Park Vibes.

SUMMARY:MICHAEL FEINSTEIN
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL REOPENING EVENT!\nPrior to purchasing tickets please review our COVID-19 Safety Measures and Policies. \nMichael Feinstein has built a  dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with “Glee” and “30 Rock” star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek\, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For Feinstein’s CD We Dreamed These Days\, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. \nHis Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy\, which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel\, IN\, aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook\,” the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award\, was broadcast for three seasons and is available on DVD. His most recent primetime PBS-TV Special\, “New Year’s Eve at The Rainbow Room” – written and directed by “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry – aired in 2014.  For his nationally syndicated public radio program “Song Travels\,” Michael interviews and performs alongside of music luminaries such as Bette Midler\, Neil Sedaka\, Liza Minnelli\, Rickie Lee Jones\, David Hyde Pierce and more. \nMichael was born and raised in Columbus\, Ohio\, where he started playing piano by ear as a 5-year-old. After graduating from high school\, he moved to Los Angeles when he was 20. The widow of legendary concert pianist-actor Oscar Levant introduced him to Ira Gershwin in July 1977. Feinstein became Gershwin’s assistant for six years\, which earned him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs\, many of which he has since performed and recorded. Through his live performances\, recordings\, film and television appearances\, and his songwriting (in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Bergman\, Lindy Robbins\, Bob Merrill and Marshall Barer)\, Feinstein is an all-star force in American music. \nFor more information\, please visit www.MichaelFeinstein.com.
