SUMMARY:Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools
DESCRIPTION:Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools return to the Pollak Theatre for another riveting evening embarking on a stripped down journey through Johnny Lyon’s eclectic version of the Great American Songbook. Playing a wide range of music from Dylan\, Mose Allison\, Muddy Waters\, NRBQ\, Richard Thompson\, Emmylou Harris\, The Band\, George Jones and more\, The Poor Fools also dive into some of the Southside’s Asbury Jukes material–revisiting some classics as well as the underperformed deep tracks. In this incarnation\, musicians such as Jeff Kazee\, John Conte\, Tommy Byrnes\, and Neal “The Dude” Pawley\, join Johnny for singing\, playing\, and having some fun on stage. It will be a loose mix of songs\, stories\, and banter between the musicians and–hopefully–the audience. \nNo rules. No fences. With Lyon shaking up each night’s setlist for himself and his gang of multi-instrumentalist band members\, these troubadours ride the rails of the runaway train known as Southside Johnny and The Poor Fools. \n \n Bob Burger will be opening the show. \nAll ticket holders will receive a free autographed poster signed by the artists after the show.

SUMMARY:True Blues with Corey Harris\, Guy Davis\, and Alvin Youngblood Hart
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Corey Harris\, a MacArthur Grant recipient\, and featuring renowned roots musicians Guy Davis and Alvin Youngblood Hart\, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the blues in an evening of music and conversation. In bringing the True Blues film to the concert stage\, the True Blues concert vividly brings to life this crucial wellspring of American music. \nBoth Corey Harris and Alvin Youngblood Hart were featured in Martin Scorcese’s “The Blues: A Musical Journey\,” which followed Corey on a roots journey to West Africa. Alvin contributed\, as well\, to Wim Wenders’ ”The Soul Of a Man” and Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters.” Guy has often followed in the Thespian footsteps of his parents\, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee\, most recently in the Broadway revival of “Finian’s Rainbow\,” and earlier in “Mulebone” and “Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil.” \nBlues is at the center of their artistry\, and the blues takes center stage in True Blues\, the concert.

SUMMARY:Andy Grammer
DESCRIPTION:Platinum-selling recording artist Andy Grammer became the first male pop star in a decade\, since John Mayer in 2002\, to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles\, Keep Your Head Up and Fine By Me. In just a few short years\, Grammer has gone on to sell over 100\,000 albums\, play sold out venues nationwide\, perform onstage with Taylor Swift\, Train\, and Colbie Caillat. While hard at work on his highly anticipated sophomore album Magazines or Novels\, Grammer released Back Home\, a joyously anthemic track that illustrates his knack for writing infectious\, relatable songs remains strong\, as does his soaring voice. On the new album\, Grammer reinforces his place among elite male pop artists through honest reflections of the impressive ride he’s been on during the past couple of years. The son of a Grammy-nominated children’s performer Red Grammer\, he often joined his dad on-stage to sing\, promoting his fierce ambition to succeed. His father instilled his work ethic and taught him to respect his audience. “I saw what it took to cultivate an artistic career\,” Grammer says. “My favorite thing is writing from a bird’s-eye view\, whether it’s a break-up or a good relationship. I like to be far enough away to see the whole scope of what’s occurring.” \nOpening for Grammer is Canadian band Zerbin who has shared the stage with The Flaming Lips\, FUN.\, Said The Whale and AWOLNATION\, cementing their status as a band to watch.

SUMMARY:Augustana
DESCRIPTION:The band from Southern California (by way of Illinois) makes a rare coastal New Jersey appearance fronted by singer-guitarist-pianist and primary composer Dan Layus; with a revamped lineup\, a new record label\, and a new leg of tour dates behind their well-received 2014 release\, Life Imitating Life. The whispery vocal verses and Coldplay-inspired ivories of the band’s early singles “Boston” and follow-ups “Sweet and Low” and “Hey Now” vaulted to the Top 10 at AAA Radio. \nThen in 2011\, for the band’s self titled album on Epic\, Layus\, had a major surprise with a punchier\, more immediate sound that carried melodic currents of Soul Asylum\, Tom Petty\, Chris Isaak and Bruce Springsteen. Now the new album reconciles the various facets of the Augustana sounds through a succinct rhythmic attack and crisp production — with bright radio-ready anthems like “Ash and Ember” sharing the ride with introspective plaints like “Remember Me\,” under the flag of Layus’s unerring pop instincts. \nOpening the show will be Jim and Sam. With the aid of producer Lasse Marten(Lykke Li\, Peter Bjorn & John\, Chrissie Hynde) Jim and Sam will complete their debut album (recorded at the legendary Puk Studios in Denmark). \n

SUMMARY:Light of Day Foundation presents: Alejandro Escovedo & the Sensitive Boys with Special Guest Amy Cook
DESCRIPTION:Alejandro Escovedo is a roots rock/alternative country singer/songwriter from Austin\, Texas. He began a career in the early 1980’s that spans 14 albums\, thousands of live shows and hundreds of thousands of miles on the road forging an identity that is one with his muse and his music. Over a lifetime spent traversing the bridge between words and melody\, he has ranged over an emotional depth that embraces all forms of genre and presentation\, a resolute voice that weathers the emotional terrain of our lives\, its celebrations and despairs\, it’s land mines\, blindsides\, upheavals and beckoning distractions\, in search of ultimate release and the healing truth of honesty. Sometimes it takes the form of barely contained rage\, the rock of punk amid kneeled feedback; sometimes it caresses and soothes\, a whispery harmony riding the air of a nightclub room\, removed from amplification\, within the audience. Alejandro has worked his musical magic a number of times at the Jersey Shore\, at the legendary Stone Pony\, at the Count Basie Theatre and at the Paramount Theater headlining the Light of Day Festival in Asbury Park where he was joined by his friends Willie Nile\, Joe Grushecky\, Jesse Malin and Bruce Springsteen. Nationally syndicated radio shows such as Little Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage continue to give prominent attention to Escovedo and his music\, continuing to play songs such as  “Silver Cloud” from his 2010 album Street Songs of Love as well as music from his most recent record 2012’s Big Station. His family boasts several professional musicians including his niece\, drummer/percussionist Sheila E.  With Special Guest Amy Cook. \nTickets on sale now online\, by phone and in person at the Pollak Theatre and MAC Box Offices.Visit lightofday.org for more information.

SUMMARY:In the Mood: 1940s Musical Revue
DESCRIPTION:Much more than a concert\, IN THE MOOD presents a retro 1940s musical revue featuring the IN THE MOOD Singers and Dancers with the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra. The music and the arrangements are as authentic as it gets. This was a time that all America was listening and dancing to the same kind of music. \n\nIn the 1940s\, the combination of up-tempo big band instrumentals and intimate\, romantic ballads set the mood for a future filled with promise\, hope and prosperity. This was the time when the music moved the nation’s spirit!

SUMMARY:ETHEL featuring Kaki King: ...And Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:Known worldwide for transcending the limits of tradition\, the New York City-based string quartet ETHEL\, comprised of Ralph Farris (viola)\, Dorothy Lawson (cello)\, Kip Jones (violin) and Tema Watstein (violin)\, has for the past decade and a half actively\, aggressively\, joyfully\, adapted their epic skill-set to the presentation of rainbow-colored music of every style and description. Guitarist Kaki King\, recognized as one of “The New Guitar Gods” by Rolling Stone has\, likewise\, won an enthusiastic international following as her gutsy\, honest\, and astonishingly beautiful works seem to defy gravity. Brought together\, these celebrated sound worlds intermingle and swarm to create a glorious and inspired collaboration. \n … And Other Stories is an electrifying immersion in brilliant instrumental skill\, rich sonic adventures\, and flights of fantastic storytelling. The collaboration is anchored by a groundbreaking re-imagining of Bach’s masterful Brandenburg Concerto #6 and also includes works from ETHEL’s repertoire by Phil Kline and John Zorn. Original works by Kaki King and a world premiere composition for ETHEL & Kaki King by Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov round out the program.

DESCRIPTION:With startling detail\, distinctive storytelling\, compelling subject matter and astonishing musicianship\, Ritter has developed a singular voice that doesn’t defy categorization so much as it creates its own. SUMMARY:The Songs of Joni Mitchell & Leonard Cohen …Starring Outstanding Cabaret Performer of the Year Lauren Fox
DESCRIPTION:Through stories and song\, Lauren Fox examines the creative genius–and conflicted desires–of two of folk music’s most enduring artists. Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen are widely known to be two of the best and most prolific songwriters of their generation. Less known about the fellow Canadian artists is that they had a relationship early in their careers that lasted only a few months\, but had a lasting effect on their work.  \n Many have speculated as to why the relationship didn’t last\, and that’s what Lauren Fox explores here–BOTH SIDES– through their music\, their histories\, their triumphs and heartbreaks. Fox delves into the meaning behind the songs\, giving us a better understanding of a painter and a poet who mesmerized the world through song. Highlights of the show include Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning\,” “River” and “Both Sides Now\,” and Cohen’s “Suzanne\,” “Bird On A Wire” and “Hallelujah.”Lauren was featured in an article about “the future of cabaret” in the Arts & Leisure section of The New York Times\, written by Stephen Holden\, the noted Times Music Critic.  Holden raved about Lauren’s Joni Mitchell/Leonard Cohen show as “a knock-out…with startling depth and intensity”\, “remarkable” “dramatically revealing” and “a spellbinding his-and hers-dialogue… that conjures the hippie culture of the Woodstock era.”  “Remarkable!  Enthralling!   Spell-binding!  A knock-out”…Stephen Holden\,The New York Times
