SUMMARY:Mavis Staples with Nicole Atkins
DESCRIPTION:There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being the voice of America’s conscience\, and even fewer who continue to make vital music. For six decades Mavis Staples has been the solid rock of American music. Alongside the family group she is so identified with\, the Staple Singers\, Mavis has managed to transform herself as she goes\, yet never alter. \nFrom the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s (“Uncloudy Day”)\, to the engaged protest of the civil rights era (“Freedom Highway”)\, and then\, amazingly\, on pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (“I’ll Take You There\,” “Respect Yourself\,” “Lets Do It Again”)–through all these\, Mavis carried on\, her warm embrace of a voice the only constant. On their second collaboration\, the Grammy-nominated 2013 album “One True Vine\,” the legendary singer and her producer\, Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy\, have crafted a gospel album for the 21st century. On the record\, Mavis gives voice to something new in her repertoire\, something deeper and more resonant with our times.  Where her Stax-era hits spoke for a growing black social consciousness\, and her seventies collaborations with The Band gave spiritual weight to the rediscovery of traditional American music\, Jeff Tweedy has crafted a pulpit from which Mavis lends her voice to a search for grace. Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer\, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner\, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient.  VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll\, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.  Her previous album\, the Tweedy-produced “You Are Not Alone\,” won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2011\, adding a remarkable new chapter to an already historic career. \nOpening for Staples is a songwriter and performer who represents an exciting new voice in millennial music — in addition to being the Jersey Shore music scene’s most acclaimed breakout artist in a generation. Nicole Atkins grabbed the industry’s attention several seasons back with her major-label debut album Neptune City\, a nationwide TV commercial for American Express\, and a musicologist’s dexterity that found her sharing stages comfortably and confidently with everyone from Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds to Monmouth professor Marc Muller’s Dead On Live project. Having reaffirmed her indie roots with her latest release Slow Phaser\, Atkins is creating some strong and innovative new music — and she’ll be sharing it\, along with the expected surprise interpretations of her many and varied influences\, in a solo acoustic setting on the Pollak stage.

SUMMARY:Jason Isbell
DESCRIPTION:A former member of the\nSouthern rock outfit Drive by Truckers\, Jason Isbell’s solo career has seemed\neffortless\, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit\n(2009)\, through Here We Rest (2011) and last year’s Live From Alabama. He writes\nopen -hearted songs full of storm and drama\, bursting with personal truths\, and\nechoing with the southern sound of his Alabama upbringing. Embracing his\nnewfound sobriety\, Isbell next produced an album of haunting atonement and\nredemption\, the sparse and impressive Southeastern\, which was a critical\nsuccess and commercial breakthrough.

SUMMARY:David Lindley & John Hammond
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his long and distinguished career David Lindley has performed music that redefines the word “eclectic.” He founded and lead the first world music rock band\, the Kaleidoscope\, has collaborated with artists such as Jackson Browne\, Henry Kaiser and Ry Cooder and is leader of his own band El Rayo-X\, that integrates American roots music and world beat with a heavy reggae influence. Lindley has been one of Hollywood’s most in demand session musicians playing with Bob Dylan\, Rod Stewart\, Linda Ronstadt\, Crosby and Nash\, Warren Zevon\, and many others. His live performances incorporate an incredible array of stringed instruments into a unique concert experience. \nJohn Hammond\, Jr. is one of a handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-’60s. A Grammy winner whose 50-year career has seen successful collaborations with the likes of Tom Waits\, Dr. John\, Duane Allman\, Robbie Robertson\, and G. Love and who once boasted both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his band\, Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence.

He didn’t know it when he was 20\, and he may not realize it now\, but Hammond deserves special commendation for keeping many of the classic blues songs alive. In the early years of his career\, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to a wider audience by performing classic — in some cases forgotten — songs. Now\, more than 50 years later\, Hammond continues to do this\, touring all over the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. Whether it’s with a band or by himself\, Hammond can do it all. Seeing him perform live\, one gets the sense that some of the best is still to come from this energetic bluesman. \n

SUMMARY:Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools
DESCRIPTION:Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools return to the Pollak Theatre for another riveting evening embarking on a stripped down journey through Johnny Lyon’s eclectic version of the Great American Songbook. Playing a wide range of music from Dylan\, Mose Allison\, Muddy Waters\, NRBQ\, Richard Thompson\, Emmylou Harris\, The Band\, George Jones and more\, The Poor Fools also dive into some of the Southside’s Asbury Jukes material–revisiting some classics as well as the underperformed deep tracks. In this incarnation\, musicians such as Jeff Kazee\, John Conte\, Tommy Byrnes\, and Neal “The Dude” Pawley\, join Johnny for singing\, playing\, and having some fun on stage. It will be a loose mix of songs\, stories\, and banter between the musicians and–hopefully–the audience. \nNo rules. No fences. With Lyon shaking up each night’s setlist for himself and his gang of multi-instrumentalist band members\, these troubadours ride the rails of the runaway train known as Southside Johnny and The Poor Fools. \n \n Bob Burger will be opening the show. \nAll ticket holders will receive a free autographed poster signed by the artists after the show.

SUMMARY:True Blues with Corey Harris\, Guy Davis\, and Alvin Youngblood Hart
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Corey Harris\, a MacArthur Grant recipient\, and featuring renowned roots musicians Guy Davis and Alvin Youngblood Hart\, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the blues in an evening of music and conversation. SUMMARY:Andy Grammer
DESCRIPTION:Platinum-selling recording artist Andy Grammer became the first male pop star in a decade\, since John Mayer in 2002\, to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles\, Keep Your Head Up and Fine By Me. In just a few short years\, Grammer has gone on to sell over 100\,000 albums\, play sold out venues nationwide\, perform onstage with Taylor Swift\, Train\, and Colbie Caillat. While hard at work on his highly anticipated sophomore album Magazines or Novels\, Grammer released Back Home\, a joyously anthemic track that illustrates his knack for writing infectious\, relatable songs remains strong\, as does his soaring voice. On the new album\, Grammer reinforces his place among elite male pop artists through honest reflections of the impressive ride he’s been on during the past couple of years. The son of a Grammy-nominated children’s performer Red Grammer\, he often joined his dad on-stage to sing\, promoting his fierce ambition to succeed. His father instilled his work ethic and taught him to respect his audience. “I saw what it took to cultivate an artistic career\,” Grammer says. “My favorite thing is writing from a bird’s-eye view\, whether it’s a break-up or a good relationship. I like to be far enough away to see the whole scope of what’s occurring.” \nOpening for Grammer is Canadian band Zerbin who has shared the stage with The Flaming Lips\, FUN.\, Said The Whale and AWOLNATION\, cementing their status as a band to watch.

SUMMARY:Augustana
DESCRIPTION:The band from Southern California (by way of Illinois) makes a rare coastal New Jersey appearance fronted by singer-guitarist-pianist and primary composer Dan Layus; with a revamped lineup\, a new record label\, and a new leg of tour dates behind their well-received 2014 release\, Life Imitating Life. The whispery vocal verses and Coldplay-inspired ivories of the band’s early singles “Boston” and follow-ups “Sweet and Low” and “Hey Now” vaulted to the Top 10 at AAA Radio. \nThen in 2011\, for the band’s self titled album on Epic\, Layus\, had a major surprise with a punchier\, more immediate sound that carried melodic currents of Soul Asylum\, Tom Petty\, Chris Isaak and Bruce Springsteen. Now the new album reconciles the various facets of the Augustana sounds through a succinct rhythmic attack and crisp production — with bright radio-ready anthems like “Ash and Ember” sharing the ride with introspective plaints like “Remember Me\,” under the flag of Layus’s unerring pop instincts. \nOpening the show will be Jim and Sam. With the aid of producer Lasse Marten(Lykke Li\, Peter Bjorn & John\, Chrissie Hynde) Jim and Sam will complete their debut album (recorded at the legendary Puk Studios in Denmark). \n
