SUMMARY:Andy Statman
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University. \nHad there been a planetarium in 19th-century Galicia\, or a kosher deli in Depression-era Kentucky\, Andy Statman’s music might have been playing in the background. Meandering through time\, geography and\nculture in a few passionate\, organic gusts of music\, neither the man nor his inimitable hybrid sound has a very clearly defined “before” or “after.” Statman\, one of his generation’s premier mandolinists and clarinetists\, thinks of his compositions as “a spontaneous\, American-roots form of very personal\, prayerful Hasidic music\, by way of avant-garde jazz.” \nThis modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art\, and seems not to recognize that his music\, like his story\, is extraordinary. It’s a story Statman rewrites with his trio every time they perform: “We’re creating an experience between the audience and us.” Statman performs his distinctive\, unconstrained meditations on jazz\, klezmer\, bluegrass and the human soul with bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle. “At a certain point\, we’re just talking\, just having a threeway conversation.” This “conversation” changes each time they have it on stage\, no melody sounding quite the same as it did before\, and none bearing the definitive stamp of the genre that spawned it. A totally unselfconscious performer\, Statman does not mind that many audiences leave slightly befuddled as to what kind\nof music\, exactly\, they have just heard.

Jimmy has devoted most of his life to making music\, beginning as a young boy in Texas\, then moving to Oklahoma where he crafted his sound\, a combining his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. His discography includes 8 critically acclaimed CDs and he has toured extensively through the U.S. and Europe.  Amy Helm’s deep musical roots are enriched by her stunning vocal and other creative gifts revealing a spellbinding artist who moves easily through a broad range of musical styles. The daughter of music legend Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen\, Helm wields a powerful voice that can both stir and soothe\, whether she is singing traditional gospel\, blues standards or her own heartfelt compositions.

They will  listen to the transformation of Irish music into today’s western\, jazz and bluegrass. DESCRIPTION:The\nBorealis Wind Quintet\, like the Spectacular Aurora Borealis\, displays a\nbrilliant array of sparkling color and magic in the music they perform.\nNominated for a Grammy in 2006\, they are without question the major wind\nquintet of our time. \nTheir warm yet commanding stage presence\, combined with great music\, always\ncaptivates the audience. Engaging and delightful\, the Borealis brings a fresh\nsound and an exciting program to each performance. They are recognized for\ntheir fundamental contributions to the wind quintet literature with their many\ncommissions\, recordings\, and editions of rare and traditional music. \nTheir tours have taken them to major halls throughout the U.S. including Weill\nHall (Carnegie) in New York\, the Frick Museum\, Princeton\, Notre Dame\, Wolf\nTrap\, Four Seasons in Berkeley\, Strathmore in Maryland and the Corning Museum\nin New York\, just to name a few. Lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings\, Juber is a world-class guitar virtuoso solo artist\, composer and arranger. Laurence Juber has released 18 critically acclaimed solo albums\, including Guitarist and PCH. His solo CD\, Pop Goes Guitar\, includes the arrangement of Stand By Me that was heard nationally in the ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ commercial. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has\nnow grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. \nThis year\, the show features a twist of rock music and country music. The rock music\nis courtesy of Eric Bazilian\, founding member of the rock band Hooters. Bazilian is also known internationally for his efforts as a Grammy nominated songwriter\, as well as being an arranger\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer. \nSinging-songwriting duo Williams Honor will bring a bit of the country to Woods Theatre. The duo have exploded in Asbury Park’s music scene\, and features producer and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Brown and performer powerhouse Reagan Richards. The two previously have worked and toured with many national acts before coming together to form the Jersey Shore’s first ever country duo. SUMMARY:Doo Wop Explosion: A Night of Acappella Harmony
DESCRIPTION:Born on the street corners of urban America\, rhythm & blues and doo wop singing reached its peak in the 1950’s\, but still has a strong following today. While doo wop singing began as an African American art form\, by the late 1950’s it was enjoyed by singers of all races. Doo wop harmony in its purist form is acappella (without instrumentals). We’ve assembled six of the top acappella doo wop vocal groups from NYC to Philadelphia\, plus a couple special guests.  Choice hails from Jersey City and has been singing for 35 years.  Their video recently went viral attracting 6 million views.  The Tee-Tones formed on the streets of Brooklyn and fine tuned their harmonies in the tunnels of the NYC subway system. They’ve since appeared on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight.  The versatile group\, Quiet Storm\, has developed a huge following in the Philadelphia area.  Called “Storm Chasers\,” their fans follow them from concert to concert. Frankie and the Fashions are a Philadelphia acappella group whose origins reach back to the 1960’s. They’ve recorded several CD’s and are well known for their popular signature song\, “What Do I Have To Do”. The popular Piscataway NJ group\, Re-MemberThen\, has the distinction of twice winning the acappella showdowns at the Meadowlands. The Vic Donna Group is known for their tight intricate harmonies of obscure R&B and Doo Wop collectors sides and original material. Vic\, himself\, has been singing since 1956. Over the years\, he’s been backed on record by such noted groups as the Fi-Tones\, Parakeets\, Cadillacs\, Sharps\, Compliments and Angels. The Vic Donna Group has recently added a couple new singers with a lot of previous experience. As a special guest\, we welcome Larry Chance of the Earls.  Larry is an internationally known doo wop star who has agreed to sing acappella for us\, backed by Re-MemberThen.  By way of a big screen video\, we’ll have De’Sean Dooley\, grandson of the Orioles Sonny Til\, singing Orioles songs backed by Quiet Storm. DESCRIPTION:It’s been 30 years since the Cowboy Junkies led by siblings Margo\, Michael and Peter Timmins on vocals\, guitar and drums respectively\, plus Alan Anton on bass —performed their first\ngigs at various Toronto clubs. For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. Expect an evening that runs the gamut from the folky intimacy of the band’s earliest efforts\, to an always surprising selection of covers (Springsteen\, Stones\, Talking Heads\, The Cure) — although to be sure\, simply delivering “the expected” has never been part of the Cowboy Junkies playbook.

SUMMARY:An Evening with NILS LOFGREN ACOUSTIC DUO
DESCRIPTION:Guitar\, multi instrumental and vocal virtuoso NILS LOFGREN joined Neil Young’s band at the age of 17. He used that credential to land his own band Grin\, a record deal in 1971. His solo career began in 1975 which spawned a string of mid-70’s rock radio hits\, “Back It Up”\, “Keith Don’t Go” and his biggest\, “I Came to Dance”. In 1984 he joined Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for the massive Born in the USA tour and has been with them ever since. Besides recording and/or touring with Neil Young\, Grin\, Bruce Springsteen\, Lou Reed\, and Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band\, Nil’s solo career has been prolific\, producing a string of albums including “Nils” (1979)\, “Flip” (1985)\, “Silver Lining” (1991)\, “Damaged Goods” (1995)\, “Acoustic Live” (1997)\, “Breakaway” (2001)\, a tribute to the songs of Neil Young\, “The Loner” (2008) and spanning 45 years\, his monumental 10 disc solo work retrospective\, “Face The Music” (2014). (produced by UMT PRESENTS)
