DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s Program for Research and Support for Rett Syndrome is proud to announce the 2019 Annual Conference: Communication and Literacy for Individuals with Complex Communication Needs \nSpeaker: Patti King-DeBaun\, M.S.\, CCC-SLP\nPatti is a speech-language pathologist who has specialized in communication and early literacy for children with complex disabilities for over 30 years. She is a highly regarded consultant\, author\, and international speaker. Patti will conduct two workshops. \n\nThursday\, October 24\, 2019\nEarly Literacy Success: Students who have Complex Communication Needs \nThis workshop is appropriate for students from Toddler-K who are at the early literacy levels and struggle with communication and language. Case examples will demonstrate support strategies for children with autism\, multiple disabilities\, AAC users and students who have severe language delays. Appropriate for students at home\, inclusion or self-contained- situations. Case examples\, hands on materials and a sample story to take home and use will be a part of this workshop. \n\n\nFriday\, October 25\, 2019\nThe Integrated Model of Communication: Balancing Conversation and Literacy instruction for Students who use AAC \nThis workshop is for anyone interested in improving the quality of instruction available to school age students who use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) with a range of student ability levels and devices\, (light to high-tech). Too often in therapy or educational programs designed for children who use AAC systems the skills (linguistic\, literacy and social) are taught in isolation rather than in an integrated manner. This presentation will demonstrate how to find the balance between social relationships\, conversation\, core word instruction/generative language and participation in the classroom and therapy programs. SUMMARY:Future of the Ocean Symposium and Champion of the Ocean Awards Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:The Urban Coast Institute (UCI) will host its 15th annual Future of the Ocean Symposium and Champion of the Ocean Awards Luncheon on Tuesday\, October 22\, at Wilson Hall. \nWith a theme of An Ocean for All: Ecosystems\, Economies & People\,  the symposium will assemble nationally recognized experts to share insights on the research\, science and technology priorities necessary to ensure our oceans continue to thrive ecologically while serving an expanding cross-section of users. \nMonmouth University President Emeritus and UCI Ocean Policy Fellow Paul G. Gaffney II will moderate a panel discussion with perspectives from the ports/maritime\, offshore wind\, ocean sciences and marine conservation communities. Rear Admiral Timothy Gallaudet\, deputy director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, will deliver plenary remarks. The panel will include Bradley Campbell\, Conservation Law Foundation executive director and former New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection commissioner; Scott Glenn\, distinguished professor in the Rutgers University Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences and co-director of the Center for Ocean Observing Leadership; David Hang\, Ørsted U.S. Offshore Wind president; and Bethann Rooney\, deputy director\, Port Department\, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. \nAt the subsequent luncheon\, the UCI will honor three symposium speakers with Champion of the Ocean Awards. The UCI will present its highest honor\, the National Champion of the Ocean Award\, to Gallaudet; the Regional Champion of the Ocean Award to Campbell; and the Coastal and Ocean Leadership Award to Glenn. \nThe symposium will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Wilson Hall Auditorium. SUMMARY:Council of Endowed Chairs Fall Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Future generations\, wildlife\, and natural resources – collectively referred to as “the voiceless” in this presentation – are the most vulnerable and least equipped populations to protect themselves from the impacts of global climate change. This presentation first identifies the common vulnerabilities of the voiceless in the Anthropocene era. It then proposes how the law can evolve to protect their interests more effectively through a stewardship-focused and rights-based system derived from the mandate inherent in the concept of sustainable development. \nThis presentation\, sponsored by the Monmouth University Council of Endowed Chairs\, is drawn from Professor Randall S.\, Abate’s forthcoming book\, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in October 2019.

DESCRIPTION:Fee: $75 / MU Faculty\, Preceptors and Students $35 \nThis program will provide 3 contact hours for nurses or 3 clinical social work continuing education units. Licensed professional counseling accreditation recognizes either of these professional bodies and will accept these credit hours. \nProgram Description\nThis presentation will outline the societal impact of pain and the importance of pain as a major healthcare issue. The opioid crisis has intensified the need to explore integrative approaches to pain management. Yet\, in spite of this growing concern\, the evidence-base for nonpharmacologic pain care is not widely disseminated. This course will outline the role of evidence-based strategies as options in comprehensive pain care. The instructor will cover modalities shown to be effective and how they can be integrated for common pain conditions. \nTopics will include:\n\nThe impact of pain & the current status of pain management\nThe need for interdisciplinary and multimodal care\nProcess and success in changing policy for comprehensive pain care\nAn overview of effective evidence-based options for comprehensive pain management\nBest practices and considerations for when referring to healthcare providers\n\nAbout Our Presenter\nDr Arya Nielsen is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. For over 40 years Dr. Nielsen has been a leader in integrating acupuncture practice to the Western conventional setting both in terms of safety\, standards of practice\, policy and procedures and presentation of the research evidence-base. She is the past Chair of the New York State Board for Acupuncture\, and the Policy Working Group for the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health; the 75 North American member organization of academic medical centers and health systems that support utilization of evidence-based nonpharmacologic therapies as integrative medical care. De-Stress for Success provides an outlet for students to practice self-care and wellness in a fun and relaxing environment. SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Coasts & Communities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The “new normal” of increased storm events\, flooding\, sea level rise\, and coastal erosion from climate change presents daunting adaptation challenges for New Jersey in the years ahead. This symposium features leading experts in climate change adaptation law and science to discuss lessons learned from other states and countries to assist New Jersey in navigating these challenges. \n \nTopics will include: \n\nS. and Australian case studies in coastal adaptation;\nPublic health dimensions of coastal adaptation;\nHuman rights impacts to vulnerable coastal communities;\nClimate change impacts to “voiceless” communities (future generations\, wildlife\, and natural resources);\nStrategies to combat climate change-induced and other anthropogenic factors in eutrophication of coastal marine ecosystems\, and the impacts to ecosystem services and the communities who depend on them.\n\nVisit the symposium web site for a full list of speakers and more event details. Admission is free for Monmouth employees and students (registration required)\, $35 for the general public\, and $25 for Monmouth alumni and non-Monmouth students.
