SUMMARY:Navigating Imposter Syndrome in Your Career\, with Becca Baier '12
DESCRIPTION:Alumni Speaker Series\nNov. 9\, 2023\, at Noon \n\nWhat happens when you are faced with imposter syndrome? Whether you are about to graduate\, you are currently employed\, or you want to switch career fields\, we’ve all felt it. That voice in your head tells you that you don’t have the experience or qualifications. How do you “fake it ’til you make it” in a place you’re worried you’ll be found out? \nAlmost 2 years ago\, Becca Baier ’12 transitioned from a higher education professional to the corporate world; these were some of her many thoughts along the way. Whether you’re thinking about changing career fields or just struggling with those loud voices in your head\, let’s talk about what we didn’t know we all experience now and then: imposter syndrome. \nAbout the Speaker\nA proud Monmouth Hawk\, Baier has a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Higher Education Student Personnel. She went to Ole Miss for grad school\, and during her eight years working in higher education\, she worked at Rider University and Rutgers-New Brunswick. In January 2022\, Baier made the career leap to corporate\, where she now works at Paramount Global in Human Resources. After her first year and a half\, she made a jump within Paramount to a new team and continues to experience that thing we can’t seem to avoid in life—change! \nOutside of work\, Baier is the founder and director of The Celebrate Life Foundation\, a NJ 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, and is a certified life & career coach. She loves spending time with her family and friends\, lives on the beach (right by campus!)\, and has a knack for organizing and color-coding.

SUMMARY:Guajiros Retratos de Otoño\, an exhibition of work by Lázaro Niebla
DESCRIPTION:Lázaro Niebla\, a resident of Trinidad de Cuba\, documents the connection to the past through reverse woodcut portraits of those that understand it best: his elders. His process begins by collecting discarded colonial window panels that were used to protect the homes in Trinidad de Cuba during the Spanish colonization. He then photographs his subjects\, capturing them in a spontaneous moment. Working off of his photograph\, Lázaro meticulously carves layer after layer from the repurposed panel\, exposing the perfectly preserved wood under the surface. Using acrylic paint\, Lázaro adds touches of color to the piece\, choosing to leave the skin of the subject wood tone — connecting the person he has chosen to portray to the material that he has chosen to work with. The life of the tree\, the window shutter\, the home it protected\, the subject portrayed\, and the artist are all represented in each piece of art. \nArtist Demonstration: September 27 from 6pm – 8pm |Great Hall Auditorium\nLázaro Niebla\, Cuban wood sculptor\, explains his concept\, technique\, tools and cultural aspects of his work.  He’ll show an example of a work in progress and how he accomplishes the carved details of his subjects to create the multi-dimensional texture of his works.\n\nNEW!!! Opening Reception – RESCHEDULED FOR November 10 from 6pm – 8 pm | Pollak Gallery\nPlease join us for a meet and greet with the artist!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a bilingual reading (Portuguese and English) and Q&A with Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão and translator Alexis Levitin. \n\n \nSalgado Maranhão\nBorn in the impoverished interior of Maranhão\, in northeast Brazil\, Salgado Maranhão became one of the most prominent Afro-Brazilian poets. Twice winner of Prêmio Jabuti\, he has been awarded major prizes from the Academy of Brazilian Letters and the Writers’ Union. Five collections of his work have appeared in English: Blood of the Sun (2012)\, Tiger Fur (2015)\, Palavora (2019)\, Mapping the Tribe (2020)\, and Consecration of the Wolves (2021)\, all in Alexis Levitin’s translation. In addition to seventeen books of poetry\, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil’s leading jazz and pop musicians. \nMaranhão’s poetry explores\, via metaphor\, the various kinds of devastation we bring upon our lands and thus upon ourselves. \n\n\n \nAlexis Levitin\nAlexis Levitin translates works from Portugal\, Brazil\, and Ecuador. His forty-eight books of translation include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm\, Eugenio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words\, Astrid Cabral’s Cage and Gazing Through Water\, and five collections by Salgado Maranhão\, including the most recent\, Consecration of the Wolves. He has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the Universities of Oporto and Coimbra (Portugal)\, The Catholic University in Guayaquil (Ecuador)\, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and has held translation residencies at the Banff Center (Canada)\, The European Translators Collegium (Germany)\, and the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio (Italy). \n\n\nThis presentation is co-sponsored by the Department of English\, Monmouth Intercultural Center\, Institute for Global Understanding\, and Department of World Languages and Cultures

SUMMARY:The Night Sea Journey - An Artist Talk by Associate Professor Kimberly Callas
DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor Kimberly Callas will give an artist talk on the artwork she created during a two-year Monmouth Fellowship\, where she served as the artist-in-residence for the Urban Coast Institute. During the fellowship\, Callas created a series of large-scale (10′) drawings that connect images of the ocean\, ocean archetypes\, and the human body. Inspired by historical nautical charts hand-drawn and mounted on muslin\, Callas’ drawings are made of graphite\, dye\, and India ink on paper and dyed muslin. They are then mounted on canvas. In the drawings\, Callas uses latitude\, longitude lines\, and depth charts to ‘specifically place’ the work in places that follow the Right Whales’ annual migration through the Jersey Shore. The drawings include symbols like the Whale\, Fish\, Boat\, Net\, and Horizon Line\, and archetypes like ‘the night sea journey\,’ a journey navigated by stars to a new shore.\n \nKimberly Callas is a multi-media artist\, sculptor\, and the lead artist of the Social Practice project Discovering the Ecological Self. She uses digital emerging technologies with traditional hand and clay modeling techniques to create life-size figures that combine the human body with symbols and patterns from nature. The figures are drawn or cast in plaster or bronze\, 3D printed or routed out of wood with a CNC. Ground pigments\, beeswax\, and natural materials such as wasp paper or birch bark are often used to finish the work. \nHer work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums and has received national and international grants and awards. Recent awards include a Pollination Project Grant\, an Urban Coast Artist-in-Residence\, and a Monmouth University Faculty Fellowship. In 2020\, she received 1st Place Award in Sculpture at the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club’s Annual Exhibit in New York City. Other recent exhibits include the 2019 International New Media Exhibit at the CICA Museum in South Korea\, Summer Exhibition at Flowers Gallery in New York City\, 9×12 at Dual Galleria in Budapest\, Hungary and Crossing Boundaries: Art and the Future of Energy at The Pensacola Museum of Art\, Pensacola\, FL. Her work has been published in Post Human\, New Media Art 2020 by CICA Press and has appeared in the Huffington Post and Art New England. Callas received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art and her BFA from Stamps School of Art at the University of Michigan. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Monmouth University\, in West Long Branch\, NJ and maintains a studio in both Maine and New Jersey. \n***This lecture can also be viewed virtually through Zoom – please CLICK HERE to register to receive the zoom link*** \n

SUMMARY:5th Annual MLK Distinguished Lecture in Social Justice featuring Anthony Abraham Jack\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Elite colleges are accepting diverse and disadvantaged students more than ever before—but to Anthony Jack\, access does not equal acceptance. An assistant professor at Harvard and author of The Privileged Poor\, Jack—once a low-income\, first-generation college student himself—studies how poor students are often failed by the top schools that admit them. In talks\, he details how class divides on campus create barriers to academic success—and shares what schools can do to truly level the playing field. \nThis program is presented annually by the President’s Advisory Council for Diversity and Inclusion and will be moderated by Professor Claude Taylor.
