The Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series will invite authors to speak to groups of students\, staff\, faculty and administrators. \nIn conjunction with Monmouth University’s Constitution Day\, we are pleased to welcome Lisa Sarnoff Gochman\, retired career appellate prosecutor and author\, on Wednesday\, Oct. 8\, at 2:45 p.m. in Pozycki Hall Auditorium (PZ115). Gochman’s memoir\, “At the Altar of the Appellate Gods: Arguing before the Supreme Court”\, details her experience arguing the landmark criminal sentencing case\, Apprendi v. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: September 11\, 16\, & 18\, 2025 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nDance music had existed since at least the 1930s\, but the beat took on a new meaning in the 1970s. The four-on-the-floor beat\, wah-wah guitar\, horns\, funky bass\, and soulful vocals invited people from various backgrounds onto the floor.  The craze may have ended by 1980\, but the music never died; instead\, the genre transformed into other genres such as House and Electronic Dance Music (EDM).  Disco Inferno\, a two-part course\, will explore the history of disco\, from its origins through its heyday and beyond. \n\n\nPart one looks at the roots of disco\, from James Brown’s extended breaks to Philadelphia International’s groundbreaking\, lush productions.  New York and Africa played key roles in the development of disco\, as did a perfect storm of social and political issues: women’s rights\, gay rights\, civil rights\, the aftermath of Vietnam and Watergate\, and much more.  Students will learn about the rise of disco\, its characteristics\, and the key artists of its early years.  No prior knowledge of the Hustle is required! \n\nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Into the Wild\, Art Exhibit by Eileen Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception: Friday\, Sept. 26\, 6-8pm \nGallery Exhibit: September 1 – October 25\, 2025 \nEileen Kennedy’s narrative art explores the relationship between contemporary humans and the natural world. The artist holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. She also studied at the Arts Students League of New York\, the Hartford Art School\, and numerous workshops. \nKennedy emerged from Pratt in 1977 as an abstract painter; however\, within a few years the narrative urge brought her back to figurative work. She enrolled in night classes at the Art Students League to refresh her drawing skills and for the next two decades made life-scale\, figurative oil paintings and drawings influenced by the Flemish school\, especially Jan van Eyck and Rogier Van der Weyden. \nIn 2009\, she took some time out to explore egg tempera\, a medium that had enchanted her since she discovered the work of George Tooker while still in art school. She completed several workshops with contemporary egg tempera master\, Koo Schadler. Kennedy found this medium perfectly suited her linear style and love for detail. She soon gave away her oil paints and brushes. \nKennedy has exhibited throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond including the Brooklyn Museum\, Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art\, Monmouth Museum\, Widener University Art Museum\, Attleboro Arts Museum\, Painted Bride Art Center\, AIR Gallery\, Blue Mountain Gallery\, Monmouth University\, Williams Center for the Arts\, Manifest Center for the Arts\, Dacia Gallery\, Lore Degenstein Gallery and others. Her works have been featured in the New York Times\, Philadelphia Inquirer\, Newark Star Ledger\, American Art Collector Magazine\, Fine Art Connoisseur Newsletter\, Create Magazine and other publications. \nIn 1995 and 2022 Kennedy was awarded artist fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In 2022 her work was included in the Lunar Codex Project\, which sent images of art from all over the world to the moon in 2024. Her work is included in the collections of the Yuko Nii Foundation\, Riverview Medical Center\, Pratt Institute and numerous private\ncollections. The artist lives and works in Toms River\, New Jersey. When not making\nart\, she plays mandolin in the Celtic trio\, The Kilkenny Cats. \n

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Katherine Parkin\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Department of History and Anthropology; Jules Plangere\, Jr.\, Endowed Chair in American Social History \nOrganized crime played a role in the experience of many securing\, providing\, and paying for abortions before they were legalized. The high rates for the procedure made illegal abortion in the 1960s the third largest moneymaker for organized crime. However\, most studies by historians\, criminologists\, and sociologists have not considered how\, where\, and when organized criminals and their accomplices profited from abortion. This study of organized crime includes those providing abortions and lending money nationally\, including relatives of Frank Sinatra and Drea de Matteo (“The Sopranos”) who provided illegal abortions in New York City.

SUMMARY:STEMming from Punk Rock (Works in Progress Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jeffrey H. Weisburg\, Ph.D.\, Specialist Professor\, Department of Biology \nPunk rock usually conjures images of teenagers or young adults (you know\, the dregs of society) with spiked\, colorful hair\, tattoos\, piercing\, wearing ripped jeans\, Doc Martin combat boots\, dancing violently to bass-pounding music in a hot and sweaty\, small music venue. Ph.D. in the sciences\, engineers\, and pre-med students are the furthest thing that comes to mind. Three lead singers of landmark punk bands have Ph.D.s in biology; Milo Aukerman of the Descendents (Biology)\, Greg Graffin of Bad Religion (Zoology)\, and Dexter Holland of the Offsprings (Molecular Biology). Several other punk rock artists also have graduate degrees in biology and engineering. This leads to the scientific question that needs to be examined and answered: What is the connection between punk rock and science? Is there something in the water? Is it genetics? Is it a chemical reaction that occurs when two people in the circle pit collide? All possibilities for this question will be investigated.
