SUMMARY:William Close and the Earth Harp Collective
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM JAN. 23\, 2016 \n William Close and the Earth Harp Collective recently pushed the boundaries of the “performance experience” when they finished third on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent.” The group received massive praise and admiration from fans and all three judges. William Close is an installation artist and musician who has developed over 100 new types of musical instruments. He is the inventor of the majestic stringed instrument\, The Earth Harp\, the world’s largest stringed instrument. Featuring the Earth Harp at the center of the group and many other signature instruments designed by Close\, William and the Earth Harp Collective is the latest adventure in the innovator’s already outstanding career.  \nWilliam’s work explores the connection between architecture and music.  Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote “architecture is frozen music\,” Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument. DESCRIPTION:Made up of women from both sides of the 1994 Rwandan genocide\, Rwanda’s first and only all women’s drum troupe\, Ingoma Nshya\, offers a place of support\, healing and reconciliation. When the group decides to partner with two young American\nentrepreneurs to open Rwanda’s first ever ice cream shop\, these remarkable women embark on a journey of independence\, peace and possibility. SWEET DREAMS interweaves heart-wrenching stories of tragedy with powerful examples of hope and resilience to present a moving portrait of a country in transition. \nThere will be a Q&A with Co-Directors Lisa Fruchtman and Rob Fruchtman following the screening. \nRUN TIME: 1 hour 30 minutes \nOn Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Sexual Assault Examination Across the Lifespan\nThis program is designed for the RN with at least 2 years recent clinical experience desiring to obtain the in-depth knowledge and skills needed to provide effective health care and services to victims of sexual assault. SUMMARY:J. Seward Johnson Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Following an early career as a painter\, Seward Johnson turned his talents to the medium of sculpture. Since then\, more than 450 of Johnson’s life-size cast bronze figures have been featured in private collections and museums in the United States\, Canada\, Europe and Asia\, as well as prominent places in the public realm such as Rockefeller Center\, Pacific Place\, Hong Kong\, Les Halles in Paris\, and Via Condotti in Rome. Seward Johnson is most widely known for his sculptures depicting people engaged in every day activities. Johnson’s desire to highlight the mundane in his Celebrating the Familiar sculpture series has brought a unique voice to the world of art in public spaces. \nJohnson is often recognized for his most dramatic work — and also his largest — the 70’ aluminum giant entitled The Awakening. This sculpture was selected for the International Sculpture Conference & Exhibition and is currently sited along the Potomac River at National Harbor in Washington\, DC. This work was profiled in LIFE magazine\, Time Magazine and has become a “must see” destination in the nation’s capitol. In recent years\, Seward Johnson’s monumental scale sculptures have captured the attention of the international media and a global audience. Among these are the 26 foot tall Forever Marilyn with her skirt blowing upwards defying the stainless steel and aluminum materials. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated author Erik Larson will speak at Monmouth University on Monday\, March 28\, 2016\, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. \n \nErik Larson has written five books that have appeared on the New York Times‘ bestseller list\, including such critically acclaimed works as In the Garden of Beasts: Love\, Terror\, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin and The Devil in the White City. Mr. Larson’s most recent book is  Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania\, which deals with the implications of the sinking of the Lusitania by German torpedoes in May 1915 and will be the subject of his talk. \nThis event is the inaugural lecture in the Department of History and Anthropology’s Charles Mayes World War I Lecture Series. \nMr. Larson’s talk at Monmouth University will be his first public appearance since the release of Dead Wake in paperback. The annual Symposium on Influencing Government Policy is sponsored by the New Jersey Baccalaureate Social Work Education Association (NJBSWEA)\, and the National Association of Social Workers –New Jersey Chapter (NASW-NJ). The focus of this year’s symposium will be on Race Relations and Environmental Justice\, and will include a Keynote speaker followed by a series of workshops that explore related policy issues. \nBSW and MSW students are encouraged to participate in this year’s symposium by developing poster presentations. These posters must be related to the policy arena. Student’s posters may involve: \n\na discussion of the policy advocacy efforts students have participated in\na discussion of student research findings that have direct relevance to the policy arena\na discussion of a practice experience that has direct relevance to the policy arena\na theoretical analysis of an ethical dilemmas faced in the policy arena\,\na discussion of a special events the student has participated in that have direct relevance to the policy arena\na policy analysis\nanother focus that is of direct relevance to the topic of social justice in the policy arena\n\nStudents interested in presenting posters should submit a title for their presentation\, the names of presenting students\, and an abstract to their school’s NJBSWEA representative. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and should provide a concise overview of the content of the poster presentation. Proposals will be reviewed based upon their clarity and focus\, relevance to the topic of social justice in the policy arena\, and strength of design. DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, the first public exhumation of a mass grave in Andalucía\, Spain took place in the province of Cádiz\, bringing to light the buried history of repression under the Franco dictatorship. Professor Cate-Arries’ lecture focuses on the oral testimonies she has recorded with family members of the civilian victims who were “disappeared” by the regime in 1936. She examines how private mourning practices\, personal objects of memory\, and stories once told behind closed doors preserved a collective memory of the losers of a civil war who decades ago fought for the democratic ideals embraced by today’s Spain.

DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute will host a symposium exploring the results of a three-year comprehensive study of the health of Barnegat Bay on Tuesday\, November 10\, 2015. The event\, titled “What Lies Beneath: Barnegat Bay\,” will feature presentations by three groups of researchers who worked on the study. \nThe New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) initiated the study to determine the sources and extent of environmental problems in the bay\, and identify actions that could be taken to slow and ultimately reverse the bay’s decline. DESCRIPTION:November 4\, 5\, 6\, 7 (at 8 p.m.) \nNovember 8 (at 3 p.m. – Sunday) \nNovember 11\, 12\, 13\, 14 (at 8 p.m.) \nNovember 15 (at 3 p.m. – Sunday) \n“In olden days\, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking\, now\, heaven knows\, ANYTHING GOES!” The classic American musical by Cole Porter will be the first musical presented in the fall semester at historic Woods Theatre by Monmouth University’s Department of Music and Theatre Arts. The show\, which debuted in 1934\, introduced such classic American standards as “You’re the Top”\, “I Get A Kick Out of You”\, and the title tune\, “Anything Goes”. Proof of its popularity is the repeated revivals on Broadway\, most recently in 2011 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in NYC.

For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. Expect an evening that runs the gamut from the folky intimacy of the band’s earliest efforts\, to an always surprising selection of covers (Springsteen\, Stones\, Talking Heads\, The Cure) — although to be sure\, simply delivering “the expected” has never been part of the Cowboy Junkies playbook.
