SUMMARY:Conservation Panel and Book Signing with John Morano
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University Professor and Eco-Adventure Series author John Morano will host a book signing and Conservation Panel with Clean Ocean Action and the Urban Coast Institute (UCI) on Oct. 27 at the Eatontown Barnes & Noble\, located in Monmouth Mall. \nThe event will kick off with a signing at 3 p.m.\, followed by the panel from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and a second signing session at the discussion’s conclusion. A portion of sales revenues on the day will be donated to the UCI to support student-faculty research activities at Monmouth University. \nMorano will moderate an expert discussion with Clean Ocean Action Executive Director Cindy Zipf and UCI Director Tony MacDonald on topics such as threats facing Jersey Shore area marine environments and wildlife. An audience question and answer segment will follow. \nMorano’s Eco-Adventure Series work raises awareness of endangered species both in this region and throughout the world. The books present imperiled habitats as settings\, underpinning the relationship between wildlife and their environment. The stories stress that thinking globally and acting locally are imperative\, both to the sustainability of our environment and the betterment of our everyday eco-intertwined lives. \nA professor of journalism at Monmouth\, Morano has authored four novels in his Eco-Adventure Series. A writer very concerned with endangered species and habitat depletion\, Morano employs the journalistic ethic of giving a voice to the voiceless as he pens stories of imperiled creatures and habitats that can’t speak for themselves.

SUMMARY:Uber Whistleblower and Time “Silence Breaker” Susan Fowler to Speak at Monmouth University
DESCRIPTION:The Leon Hess Business School Presents the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: \n“The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley”\nUber whistleblower Susan Fowler will give the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: “The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley” on Wednesday\, April 11\, at 3 p.m. in Pollak Theatre on the Monmouth University campus. \nSusan Fowler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in physics. Following jobs at two startup companies\, she was hired by Uber as a site reliability engineer. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigned and 20 employees were fired. Under Ariana Huffington’s supervision\, Uber’s Board of Directors hired former attorney general Eric Holder and his law firm\, which conducted an investigation and proposed sweeping changes. \nIn 2017\, Fowler was recognized as the Financial Times Person of the Year and one of Time magazine’s persons of the year: “The Silence Breakers.” Her Uber adventures are the subject of an upcoming movie. \nThis free event is open to the public. RSVPs are not required for the lecture. Questions may be directed to Trish LaMarca at plamarca@monmouth.edu or 732-571-3423.

SUMMARY:Straight Talk on #FakeNews
DESCRIPTION:What is the difference between #FakeNews and fake news? Attempts to undermine the credibility of news reports can weaken an essential pillar of a healthy democracy. A panel of professionals will discuss the current environment and future of the Fourth Estate from the perspectives of print media\, broadcasting\, and data reporting. The forum will include an opportunity for audience Q&A. \nSponsored by the Monmouth University Polling Institute\, Department of Communication\, Monmouth Oral Communication Center (MOCC)\, Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences \n\nPanelists\n\n \nJack Ford is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning journalist\, documentary producer\, prominent trial attorney\, author\, and professor. He is currently a CBS News Correspondent for “60 Minutes Sports” and Host of “Metro Focus” on PBS (WNET-New York). He is also the Co-Founder and Chief Anchor of the American Education Network and a consultant for the NCAA. Mr. Ford was an original anchor at the launch of Court TV and was Chief Legal Correspondent at NBC News. Mr. Ford has been awarded five honorary degrees\, recognizing his professional accomplishments and his extensive public service work. \n\n\n \nKatie Jennings is a reporter for POLITICO New Jersey. She writes about policy and politics with a focus on health care. Previously\, she worked with a team from Columbia Journalism School on a year-long investigation into ExxonMobil’s internal climate change knowledge\, which was published in collaboration with the Los Angeles Times in 2015. Her investigation into a secretive committee convened by the American Medical Association that helps determine how much Medicare should pay doctors was published in POLITICO Magazine in 2014. \n\n\n \nPatrick Murray was named the founding director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in 2005. In that short time\, the Monmouth University Poll has established itself as one of the nation’s leading independent survey research centers\, earning an A+ rating from FiveThirtyEight.com\, making it one of only five polling organizations out of nearly 400 nationally to receive this top grade. Murray frequently appears as a commentator on national and regional TV and radio. During federal election years\, he also serves as an exit poll analyst for the NBC News Decision Desk. \n\n\n \nMichael Phillips-Anderson is an Associate Professor of Communication at Monmouth University. He is concerned with the role of public discourse in the creation of active citizenship. His teaching and writing examine historical and contemporary public address\, new media and political rhetoric\, and the strategic use of humor. He is currently writing a book about comedians who have performed satirical presidential campaigns.

SUMMARY:Governor Richard J. Codey to Speak at Current Topics in Counseling Conference
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s 2017-2018 Public Servant-in-Residence\, former NJ Governor Richard J. A separate RSVP is not required for Governor Codey’s session. \nIf interested in the Current Topics in Counseling Conference\, please use the link below for further details regarding the entire conference and how to register for the full-day program. \nCurrent Topics in Counseling Conference \nFor more information\, contact Lisa Himelman\, Professional Development Coordinator\, Department of Professional Counseling\, at 732-923-4572 or lhimelma@monmouth.edu.
