SUMMARY:The Third Annual Julian Abele “Out of the Shadows” Public History Symposium (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Public History Minor at Monmouth University \nThe Public History Minor at Monmouth University hosted the first annual Julian Francis Abele “Out of the Shadows” Virtual Public History Symposium via Zoom in 2021. Free for presenters and attendees alike\, the Symposium is intended as a welcoming place for public history practitioners at all levels\, established and emerging scholars\, and graduate and undergraduate students to share their public history work on individuals or groups in history whose legacies have been purposefully or inadvertently suppressed\, overshadowed\, or underappreciated. We hope to bring these parties out of the shadows and into the fuller appreciation that they so richly deserve. \nThe Symposium is named in honor of pioneering African American architect Julian Francis Abele\, who contributed greatly to the design of Monmouth University’s Great Hall (previously known as both Shadow Lawn and Wilson Hall). Everyone who has attended Monmouth University has personal memories of the building\, a National Historic Landmark. But if you ask them about it\, they are probably more likely to mention Woodrow Wilson’s brief time at the original Shadow Lawn (not “ours”)\, or the current mansion’s starring role as Daddy Warbucks’s home in the movie Annie than they are the fact that it was designed in large part by perhaps “the greatest American born Beaux-Arts architect\,” Julian Francis Abele. Monmouth University’s Fall 2020 Museums and Archives Management Basics class sought to increase awareness about Abele’s role in the creation of what is perhaps our University’s most beloved landmark by creating “The Julian Abele Project.” Now\, we hope to honor Abele’s name with this annual virtual public history symposium\, designed to bring regular attention to Abele’s story and to highlight work focused on other figures underrepresented in the historical record.

Whether you are about to graduate\, you are currently employed\, or you want to switch career fields\, we’ve all felt it. That voice in your head tells you that you don’t have the experience or qualifications. How do you “fake it ’til you make it” in a place you’re worried you’ll be found out? \nAlmost 2 years ago\, Becca Baier ’12 transitioned from a higher education professional to the corporate world; these were some of her many thoughts along the way. Whether you’re thinking about changing career fields or just struggling with those loud voices in your head\, let’s talk about what we didn’t know we all experience now and then: imposter syndrome. \nAbout the Speaker\nA proud Monmouth Hawk\, Baier has a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Higher Education Student Personnel. She went to Ole Miss for grad school\, and during her eight years working in higher education\, she worked at Rider University and Rutgers-New Brunswick. In January 2022\, Baier made the career leap to corporate\, where she now works at Paramount Global in Human Resources. After her first year and a half\, she made a jump within Paramount to a new team and continues to experience that thing we can’t seem to avoid in life—change! \nOutside of work\, Baier is the founder and director of The Celebrate Life Foundation\, a NJ 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, and is a certified life & career coach. She loves spending time with her family and friends\, lives on the beach (right by campus!)\, and has a knack for organizing and color-coding.

DESCRIPTION:A Marine Science and Policy Perspective on Offshore Wind Energy in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Jason Adolf\, Ph.D.\, Keith Dunton\, Ph.D.\, and Professor John Tiedemann. \nThe development of offshore wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuel-based energy is happening rapidly on the continental shelf off the coasts of New Jersey and New York. However\, there is a combination of excitement and reservation among academic\, environmental and stakeholder groups surrounding this issue – while the need for non-fossil fuel energy is clear\, the potential impacts off offshore wind development on the marine environment and economy are unclear.  This session will highlight the regulatory\, permitting\, and monitoring process involved in offshore wind development and highlight the involvement of Monmouth University faculty and students in fisheries monitoring plans aimed at detecting potential impacts of offshore wind development. Non-invasive techniques such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses and acoustic telemetry will be discussed with regard their role in the broader picture of understanding the continental shelf marine ecosystem and potential impacts of offshore wind.

SUMMARY:Bilingual Poetry Reading and Q&A with Salgado Maranhão and Alexis Levitin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a bilingual reading (Portuguese and English) and Q&A with Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão and translator Alexis Levitin. \n\n \nSalgado Maranhão\nBorn in the impoverished interior of Maranhão\, in northeast Brazil\, Salgado Maranhão became one of the most prominent Afro-Brazilian poets. Twice winner of Prêmio Jabuti\, he has been awarded major prizes from the Academy of Brazilian Letters and the Writers’ Union. Five collections of his work have appeared in English: Blood of the Sun (2012)\, Tiger Fur (2015)\, Palavora (2019)\, Mapping the Tribe (2020)\, and Consecration of the Wolves (2021)\, all in Alexis Levitin’s translation. In addition to seventeen books of poetry\, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil’s leading jazz and pop musicians. \nMaranhão’s poetry explores\, via metaphor\, the various kinds of devastation we bring upon our lands and thus upon ourselves. \n\n\n \nAlexis Levitin\nAlexis Levitin translates works from Portugal\, Brazil\, and Ecuador. His forty-eight books of translation include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm\, Eugenio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words\, Astrid Cabral’s Cage and Gazing Through Water\, and five collections by Salgado Maranhão\, including the most recent\, Consecration of the Wolves. He has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the Universities of Oporto and Coimbra (Portugal)\, The Catholic University in Guayaquil (Ecuador)\, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and has held translation residencies at the Banff Center (Canada)\, The European Translators Collegium (Germany)\, and the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio (Italy). \n\n\nThis presentation is co-sponsored by the Department of English\, Monmouth Intercultural Center\, Institute for Global Understanding\, and Department of World Languages and Cultures

DESCRIPTION:Join fellow alumni and friends and “party with a purpose” in support of The NEST. \nThe NEST is a student-run food pantry created by the Student Government Association (SGA) in September 2018 to address the growing prevalence of food insecurity among college students. The pantry supports Monmouth University undergraduate and graduate students by increasing food assistance and access by providing non-perishable food items (i.e.\, pasta\, canned goods\, cereals\, crackers\, etc.)\, beverages\, and personal hygiene items (i.e.\, toothpaste\, shampoo\, conditioner\, toilet paper\, etc.) at no cost. In addition to providing food and hygiene products\, the pantry offers additional resources to students who may be food insecure\, including community and state programs or organizations for food\, healthcare\, or financial assistance. \nBe Advised: All attendees must be at least 21 years old to participate. DESCRIPTION:An evidenced based program designed to inspire those who care for others to also take care of themselves. This program will explore the need for self-care and the research supporting it. \nThe presenters will focus on behaviors that can improve the mental and physical health of both the caregiver and their clients. Join us in exploring simple lifestyle changes and resources that can be shared with your friends and co-workers to improve workplace wellness. \nTopics Include \n\nThe evidence for self-care: Take good care of your-self: understanding the evidence and applying it to your life.\nMindful meditation: A guided practice and techniques to reduce stress\, enhance focus and well-being. Perfect for people who think they can’t meditate.\nTai Chi: Explore the numerous benefits and take part in a brief introduction to the movements.\nSelf-defense basics: Develop a mindful approach and awareness to your surroundings and observe simple strategies that can be applied in any setting.\n\nWear comfortable clothes and shoes! Participants will take part in a mindful meditation and participate in the gentle practice of Tai Chi. Self-defense techniques will be demonstrated. \nPresenters \n\nCynthia O’Connell is a recently retired Specialist Professor from the Educational Counseling graduate program at MU. She received her training in teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Integrative Medicine Center in Philadelphia.\nAndrea Garcia\, OTD\, MSW\, OTR/L is a specialist professor and doctoral capstone coordinator for Monmouth University’s occupational therapy program. She specializes in upper extremity rehabilitation. Dr. Garcia is a master teacher in reiki.\nShoshanna Katzman\, M.S\, L.Ac is the founder of Red Bank Acupuncture & Wellness Center. She has been practicing Tai Chi and Qigong since 1974. She also specializes in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.\nBrianna Wesley\, RN\, B.S. is a registered nurse in the emergency department and current graduate student at Monmouth University. She has a fourth degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do Chung Do Kwan and has been practicing for 22 years.\n\nSuccessful Completion: Participants will attend 95% of the program\, and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours.
