SUMMARY:The Courage to Challenge Racial Injustice and Build Equity in Education: A Conversation with Ruby Bridges
DESCRIPTION:Social Justice Academy Professional Development Series Fall 2024 Series\nA Conversation with Ruby Bridges in recognition of the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education\nCo-moderated by Vernon Smith\, Ph.D.\, and Zaneta Rago-Craft\, Ed.D. \nCo-sponsored with the Monmouth University Intercultural Center \nRuby Bridges is a civil rights icon\, activist\, author\, and speaker who at the age of 6 was the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school alone in Louisiana. She was born in Mississippi in 1954\, the same year the United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision ordering the integration of public schools. Her family later moved to New Orleans\, where on Nov. 14\, 1960\, Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School\, single-handedly initiating the desegregation of public education. Her walk to the front door of the school was immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s painting “The Problem We All Live With”\, in Robert Coles’ book “The Story of Ruby Bridges”\, and in the Disney movie “Ruby Bridges”. \nShe established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to provide leadership training programs that inspire youth and community leaders to embrace and value the richness of diversity. Bridges is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the NAACP Martin Luther King Award\, the Presidential Citizens Medal\, and honorary doctorate degrees from Connecticut College\, College of New Rochelle\, Columbia University Teachers College\, and Tulane University. Bridges is also the author of “Through My Eyes”\, “This Is Your Time”\, “I Am Ruby Bridges”\, and “Dear Ruby\, Hear Our Hearts”\, released in January 2024. In March 2024\, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Adam Heinrich\, Ph.D. \nThis two-hour session will look at the archaeological evidence for the lives of enslaved people in New Jersey of both African and Native American descent. The roles and lives of enslaved people have frequently been overlooked in New Jersey histories and at historical sites. Over the last several years\, archaeological investigations have been able to identify the presence of enslaved people through the evidence of their lives and culture. This has included how they coped with their lives held in bondage and maintained traditional lifeways. Artifacts discussed will include grave markers\, food remains\, and spiritual items. The history of comics is actually rich in terms of these fields\, and more recent graphic histories have elucidated the depth of these histories\, both in the US and worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Christopher DeRosa\, Ph.D. \nThis two-hour session traces how Union and Confederate plans for victory evolved over the course of the war. We will look at how American geography\, contemporary military thinking\, the available technology\, and the contestants’ capacity for mobilization influenced their strategic choices. In particular\, we will consider the profound struggle between slavery and emancipation as a fundamental determinant of war strategy. Along the way\, we will touch on why the reputations of particular leaders like Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee have fluctuated over the years. SUMMARY:Why Americans Doubt Climate Science
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Peter Jacques\, Ph.D. \nIn 2023\, fifteen percent of surveyed Americans did not think climate change was happening\, and 28 percent responded that warming was not caused by human activities. 22 percent were doubtful or dismissive of climate change. Why is this when over\, according to a 2021 survey of climate experts found that 98.7 percent of them said the climate is warming and humans are driving this global environmental change? Between confirmed climate experts who published 20 or more peer reviewed papers on climate change between 2015 and 2019\, there was 100 percent agreement that the Earth is warming mostly because of human activity.  \nAt least part of this disconnect is because there has been a US-centered counter-movement organized to cast doubt on climate change science and climate scientists. This effort is organized by policy elites in conservative think tanks who have guided some of our narratives and these narratives have turned an elite-led counter-movement to one that is populist. This discussion will attend to the social science surrounding this climate change counter-movement (CCCM).

After graduating\, she worked in the brain injury and mental health field before embarking on a career pivot to HR with CentraState Healthcare System in 2018.  Despite changing functions\, she’s been working in healthcare now in some capacity for more than 11 years. Kerstin found her “home” in HR at Johnson & Johnson\, where she is currently employed. DESCRIPTION:Tickets will go on sale for this event Monday\, December 18\, at 12 p.m. \nBruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music Presents Symposium to Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Beatles’ Arrival in America \nThe Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University will present a symposium on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024 that celebrates the arrival of the Beatles in America sixty years ago. Titled Get Back…To 1964\, the day-long event will include panel discussions\, interviews\, book signings\, and musical performances of early Beatles’ songs performed by regional musicians. \nParticipants in the symposium include Beatles’ authors Ken Womack (Living the Beatles Legend) Bruce Spizer (The Beatles Please Please Me); radio personalities Dennis Elsas (WFUV and Sirius) and Tom Frangione (Sirius); and musician Jim Babjak (Smithereens). \n“The arrival of The Beatles in February 1964 profoundly changed the course of American music\,” said Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. “They inspired musicians here from New York to San Francisco and brought to rock & roll brand new ideas as to how the music could be made.” \n“The Beatles transformed American music\, fashion and culture. DESCRIPTION:Racial Healing: Practical Activities to Help You Explore Racial Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing \nIn this session\, Anneliese Singh describes core racial healing strategies that people can practice in the aim of collective racial justice and liberation. In doing so\, Singh invites people to explore their own racial healing so they can build stronger relationships across multiple races/ethnicities to identify and transform structural racism within institutional settings. \nAnneliese Singh\, Ph.D.\, LPC (she/they) is a professor and chief diversity officer/associate provost for Diversity and Faculty Development at Tulane University. Her scholarship and community organizing explores the resilience\, trauma\, and identity development experiences of queer and trans people\, with a focus on young people and BIPOC people. Anneliese is the author of “The Racial Healing Handbook: Practical Activities to Help You Challenge Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing” and “The Queer and Trans Resilience Workbook.” Anneliese is co-founder of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition and the Trans Resilience Project. SUMMARY:The Third Annual Julian Abele “Out of the Shadows” Public History Symposium (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Public History Minor at Monmouth University \nThe Public History Minor at Monmouth University hosted the first annual Julian Francis Abele “Out of the Shadows” Virtual Public History Symposium via Zoom in 2021. Free for presenters and attendees alike\, the Symposium is intended as a welcoming place for public history practitioners at all levels\, established and emerging scholars\, and graduate and undergraduate students to share their public history work on individuals or groups in history whose legacies have been purposefully or inadvertently suppressed\, overshadowed\, or underappreciated. We hope to bring these parties out of the shadows and into the fuller appreciation that they so richly deserve. \nThe Symposium is named in honor of pioneering African American architect Julian Francis Abele\, who contributed greatly to the design of Monmouth University’s Great Hall (previously known as both Shadow Lawn and Wilson Hall). Everyone who has attended Monmouth University has personal memories of the building\, a National Historic Landmark. But if you ask them about it\, they are probably more likely to mention Woodrow Wilson’s brief time at the original Shadow Lawn (not “ours”)\, or the current mansion’s starring role as Daddy Warbucks’s home in the movie Annie than they are the fact that it was designed in large part by perhaps “the greatest American born Beaux-Arts architect\,” Julian Francis Abele. Monmouth University’s Fall 2020 Museums and Archives Management Basics class sought to increase awareness about Abele’s role in the creation of what is perhaps our University’s most beloved landmark by creating “The Julian Abele Project.” Now\, we hope to honor Abele’s name with this annual virtual public history symposium\, designed to bring regular attention to Abele’s story and to highlight work focused on other figures underrepresented in the historical record.

DESCRIPTION:Alumni Speaker Series\nNov. 9\, 2023\, at Noon \n\nWhat happens when you are faced with imposter syndrome? Whether you are about to graduate\, you are currently employed\, or you want to switch career fields\, we’ve all felt it. That voice in your head tells you that you don’t have the experience or qualifications. How do you “fake it ’til you make it” in a place you’re worried you’ll be found out? \nAlmost 2 years ago\, Becca Baier ’12 transitioned from a higher education professional to the corporate world; these were some of her many thoughts along the way. Whether you’re thinking about changing career fields or just struggling with those loud voices in your head\, let’s talk about what we didn’t know we all experience now and then: imposter syndrome. \nAbout the Speaker\nA proud Monmouth Hawk\, Baier has a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Higher Education Student Personnel. She went to Ole Miss for grad school\, and during her eight years working in higher education\, she worked at Rider University and Rutgers-New Brunswick. In January 2022\, Baier made the career leap to corporate\, where she now works at Paramount Global in Human Resources. After her first year and a half\, she made a jump within Paramount to a new team and continues to experience that thing we can’t seem to avoid in life—change! \nOutside of work\, Baier is the founder and director of The Celebrate Life Foundation\, a NJ 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, and is a certified life & career coach. She loves spending time with her family and friends\, lives on the beach (right by campus!)\, and has a knack for organizing and color-coding.
