SUMMARY:Perugino: Eternal Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Perugino: Eternal Renaissance is a journey to discover Perugino\, one of the most revered artists of the 15th Century and to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of his death. \nJourney through Italy to discover his great masterpieces\, from the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel to the two rooms entirely dedicated to him in the National Gallery of Umbria. Spectators will be led on a guided discovery of the artist’s harmonious work: a perfect balance between man and nature\, realism and idealism\, as seen in paintings such as “The Delivery of the Keys” in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel\, “Lamentation over the Dead Christ” in the Galleria Palatina in Florence\, the “Pietà” and “Agony in the Garden” in the Uffizi Gallery.

SUMMARY:Brute Force
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1940\, Monmouth University alumnus Stephen Friedland performs under the name Brute Force. A lifelong singer-songwriter\, Friedland began his musical journey a songwriter for Bright Tunes Productions at the behest of doo-wop group The Tokens\, who had scored a hit with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Friedland joined the band as their keyboard player. For Bright Tunes\, Friedland composed the Chiffons’ 1965 hit “Nobody Knows What’s Goin’ On (in My Mind But Me).” He also composed hit songs for Del Shannon\, Peggy March\,  and The Cyrkle. \n\n\n \n\n\nIn 1968\, The Beatles famously invited musicians around the world to submit their work for consideration for release by Apple Records. Friedland answered the call with his original composition “The King of Fuh\,” which has emerged as one of the most notorious songs in annals of Apple Records history. Against all odds\, John Lennon and George Harrison opted to release the song\, which tells the tongue-in-cheek story about a monarch toiling in the land of Fuh. Under Harrison’s supervision\, the song was overdubbed with a string arrangement composed by John Barham. Given the song’s irreverent nature\, EMI (Apple’s parent company) refused to distribute the single\, of which only 1\,000 copies were pressed. In 2010\, more than four decades after its original rejection by EMI\, “The King of Fuh” was released by Apple Records on the Come and Get It compilation. Friedland is currently developing a play titled Color Talk for production.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Mind and Music of Leonard Bernstein with Dr. Richard Kogan
DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein\, renowned for his dynamic conducting and compositions like “West Side Story\,” remains a towering figure in 20th-century music. Explore the fascinating intersection of Bernstein’s genius and the mind with Dr. Richard Kogan in a TED-like lecture and piano performance. Trained at Juilliard in piano and Harvard Medical School in psychiatry\, Dr. Kogan\, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Artistic Director of the Music and Medicine program at Weill Cornell Medical Center\, offers a unique perspective. \nRichard Kogan’s concert lecture audiences hear him recount Bernstein’s life “from his first cigarette to his last dying day”\, interspersing oral history and anecdote with performances of “Somewhere”\, “Maria”\, “Tonight”\, “One Hand\, One Heart”\, “America” and more. Dr. Kogan offers a psychiatric perspective on Bernstein’s complex personality in this program as well.  He identifies Bernstein as a man of voracious appetites\, the satisfaction of which caused enormous guilt.  Still\, Dr. Kogan points to Bernstein’s remarkable capacity to sustain contradictions.  He cites Bernstein’s balancing of the tensions between elite and mass appeal\, between emotions and the intellect and between tradition and innovation.  Dr. Kogan contrasts these with Bernstein’s irreconcilable bisexual conflicts and his struggles to balance the life of a composer and the life of a performer. \nphoto: Paul de Hueck\, courtesy the Leonard Bernstein Office\, Inc.

SUMMARY:The Eighth Biennial International Interdisciplinary Conference on Race
DESCRIPTION:Race and the Freedom to Learn\nCosponsored by the William Monroe Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture at UMass Boston \nLocation: Monmouth University Campus \nThe freedom to learn has been inextricably linked to race across time and space. From the era of enslavement in the Americas to book burning in Nazi Germany down to the present humans around the globe have demanded the freedom to learn as a fundamental human right. This right to learn is intrinsically linked to race\, gender\, sexuality\, and class -the denial of which diminishes society while threatening democracy. Denying groups and individuals the right to learn impacts everyone in society and oftentimes involves the censoring of curriculum\, arrest of educators\, and book banning or book burning. The freedom to learn has been particularly denied to marginalized communities including people of color\, women\, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. \nIn November 2024\, the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Race will focus on “Race and the Freedom to Learn” and invites papers from a range of disciplines\, including history\, anthropology\, education\, gender studies\, ethnic studies\, sociology\, and other disciplines that have grappled with this subject. We welcome individual papers or complete panels from scholars\, educators\, artists\, and activists whose work is related to race\, its intersections\, and the freedom to learn in history\, society\, and culture. We also seek papers from international scholars and offer a few travel stipends to scholars traveling from abroad to attend the conference.

SUMMARY:The Courage to Challenge Racial Injustice and Build Equity in Education: A Conversation with Ruby Bridges
DESCRIPTION:Social Justice Academy Professional Development Series Fall 2024 Series\nA Conversation with Ruby Bridges in recognition of the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education\nCo-moderated by Vernon Smith\, Ph.D.\, and Zaneta Rago-Craft\, Ed.D. \nCo-sponsored with the Monmouth University Intercultural Center \nRuby Bridges is a civil rights icon\, activist\, author\, and speaker who at the age of 6 was the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school alone in Louisiana. She was born in Mississippi in 1954\, the same year the United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision ordering the integration of public schools. Her family later moved to New Orleans\, where on Nov. 14\, 1960\, Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School\, single-handedly initiating the desegregation of public education. Her walk to the front door of the school was immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s painting “The Problem We All Live With”\, in Robert Coles’ book “The Story of Ruby Bridges”\, and in the Disney movie “Ruby Bridges”. \nShe established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to provide leadership training programs that inspire youth and community leaders to embrace and value the richness of diversity. Bridges is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the NAACP Martin Luther King Award\, the Presidential Citizens Medal\, and honorary doctorate degrees from Connecticut College\, College of New Rochelle\, Columbia University Teachers College\, and Tulane University. Bridges is also the author of “Through My Eyes”\, “This Is Your Time”\, “I Am Ruby Bridges”\, and “Dear Ruby\, Hear Our Hearts”\, released in January 2024. In March 2024\, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Grounded
DESCRIPTION:*** Please note that there will also be a home football game taking place on campus at 1pm this day. We encourage our patrons to arrive on campus early and please let the parking attendants know you are here for the MET opera so that you do not pay the parking fee.*** \nTwo-time Tony Award–winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s powerful new opera Grounded\, commissioned by the Met and based on librettist George Brant’s acclaimed play\, wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo\, one of opera’s most compelling young stars\, portrays Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas\, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle\, she fights to maintain her sanity\, and her soul\, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the Met premiere of Tesori’s kaleidoscopic score and a cast that also features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess’s husband. Michael Mayer’s high-tech staging\, using a vast array of LED screens\, presents a variety of perspectives on the action\, including the drone’s predatory view from high above. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series\, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.
