DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein\, renowned for his dynamic conducting and compositions like “West Side Story\,” remains a towering figure in 20th-century music. Explore the fascinating intersection of Bernstein’s genius and the mind with Dr. Richard Kogan in a TED-like lecture and piano performance. Trained at Juilliard in piano and Harvard Medical School in psychiatry\, Dr. Kogan\, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Artistic Director of the Music and Medicine program at Weill Cornell Medical Center\, offers a unique perspective. \nRichard Kogan’s concert lecture audiences hear him recount Bernstein’s life “from his first cigarette to his last dying day”\, interspersing oral history and anecdote with performances of “Somewhere”\, “Maria”\, “Tonight”\, “One Hand\, One Heart”\, “America” and more. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Dobbs decision\, which led to the loss of national abortion access\, has ushered in a new era for women’s health\, one marked by worsening health outcomes\, maternal health deserts\, uncertainty and fear. DESCRIPTION:ALICIA OSTRIKER has published 19 collections of poetry\, been twice nominated for the National Book Award\, and has twice received the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry\, among other honors. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Yale Review\, American Poetry Review\, Best American Poetry \, The Atlantic \, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals\, and has been translated into numerous languages including Hebrew and Arabic. Her most recent collections of poems are Waiting for the Light and The Volcano and After:Selected and New Poems 2002 – 2019 . She was New York State Poet Laureate for 2018 – 2021 and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2015 – 2020. \nJOAN LARKIN is the author of five previous collections of poetry\, including Blue Hanuman (2014); My Body: New and Selected Poems (2007)\, which received the Audre Lorde Award from the Publishing Triangle; Lambda Literary Award winner Cold River (1997); and Housework (1975). With Jaime Manrique\, Larkin translated Sor Juana’ s Love Poems\, a bilingual edition of Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz’ s poetry (1997). Her prose works include I f You Want What We Have: Sponsorship Meditations (1998) and Glad Day: Daily Meditations for Gay\, Lesbian\, Bisexual\, and Transgender People (1998). Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo\, one of opera’s most compelling young stars\, portrays Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas\, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle\, she fights to maintain her sanity\, and her soul\, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the Met premiere of Tesori’s kaleidoscopic score and a cast that also features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess’s husband. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guests Willie Nile and Emily Grove\, as well as an opening set by student/artist Amani Lillian and Prof. George Wurzbach. \nA pre-show reception will be held at 7 pm for all ticket holders\, doors open at 7:30 PM\n \nThe New York Times called Buffalo\, NY born Willie Nile “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years.” Bono\, Bruce Springsteen\, Pete Townshend\, Lou Reed\, Lucinda Williams\, Jim Jarmusch\, and Little Steven are among those who have sung his praises. He has toured across the U.S. with The Who and has sung with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. As the induction program from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame says: “His live performances are legendary.” His 2020 album New York At Night got rave reviews\, with Downbeat calling it a “sonic love letter to Gotham.” His newest studio album The Day The Earth Stood Still\, which features a duet with Steve Earle on the song “Blood On Your Hands” was released on Aug 13\, 2021. \nEmily Grove has had a varied and exciting musical journey\, from coffeehouses to Berklee College of Music\, to television appearances to tours in the UK and Europe. She has toured the UK\, Ireland\, US\, and Canada\, opening up for and performing with British artist David Ford. DESCRIPTION:Michael Frankel\, the author of Hurricanes of Color and Monmouth University alumnus will be giving an artist’s talk and book-signing hosted by Prof. Ken Womack and Prof. Joe Rapolla. \nHurricanes of Color \nIn 1964\, fifteen-year-old Mike Frankel found himself among professional photojournalists covering a Beatles concert during the band’s first tour in the United States. A few years later\, he was a regular photographer at the Fillmore East\, a storied venue in classic rock. And in 1969\, he was onstage at Woodstock\, documenting one of the most important events in American music history. \nFeaturing Frankel’s stunning photographs of nearly every major rock figure from the 1960s and ’70s―including Led Zeppelin\, Pink Floyd\, the Rolling Stones\, Janis Joplin\, and the Grateful Dead―as well as many unpublished images of the Beatles\, Hurricanes ofColor chronicles an extraordinary moment. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the spring at Monmouth University with this unique opportunity to learn the seasonal ancient art known as Pysanky. Pysanky\, also known as Ukrainian eggs\, is an ancient folk tradition that has been passed down for thousands of years. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come. This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky\, a demonstration\, and independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs\, dyes\, and tools. Participants will turn real eggs into works of art using a wax resist method similar to batik. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg\, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off. In-person attendance will be extremely limited. \nNo prerequisite skills are required. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. ages 18+

DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s Summer Music and Arts festival is now in its third season—and its first as an in-person event – is taking place on Saturday\, July 9th in the theatres and galleries across campus. With family-friendly programming\, student performances\, a visual arts exhibit and an eclectic evening concert – there truly is something for everyone to enjoy. \nFestival Schedule: \n\nBlue Hawk House Band\nWoods Theatre | 4:00 PM\nTickets: $20\, Children are FREE (must be accompanied by paying adult)\n \nFollowing the Garden State Philharmonic\, Monmouth University’s very own Blue Hawk House Band\, who has been entertaining folks virtually throughout the pandemic monthly during Tuesday Night Record Club\, will make their live debut. These talented students put their very own spin on rock and pop classics. \n\nPoetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats\nPollak Theatre | 7:00 PM\nTickets: $38-$50 \nFinally\, the festival will conclude with a capstone evening of Poetry\, Jazz and “Harp”Beats featuring – Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise’s hip-hop poetry with bluesy beats supported by the harp\, New Jersey native and former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s “PoemJazz” with a reading and performance of poems in concert with a variety of jazz improvisations. Also featured on the evening’s bill are the Digba Ogunbiyi Quartet playing original compositions that are deeply rooted in Ogunbiyi’s Nigeria roots\, yet highly informed by his years of studying Jazz; and an opening set by Gregory Schwartz\, former recipient of the Poet Laureate of Asbury Park award. \n\nFront Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul\nPollak and DiMattio Galleries\n10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\nFree and open to the public\n\nThroughout the day\, participants are invited to view the iconic photographs of Larry Hulst in the exhibition Front Row Center: Icons of Rock\, Blues\, and Soul on display in Pollak and Ice House Galleries. From Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to David Bowie and Lauryn Hill the exhibit brings together over 70 images of legendary musicians and singers across three genres showcasing a unique visual anthology of rock\, blues\, and soul music from 1970–1999. The exhibition will run through July 15.\n\nThe Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival is designed to provide Monmouth County communities and beyond\, along with the students\, faculty\, and staff at Monmouth University\, with the opportunity to enjoy a top-flight music and arts event each summer.
