On the R&B and pop charts as well as on the dance floor\, funk had officially taken over. This two-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole covers the peak of the genre\, its eventual decline in popularity\, and its continuing influence. Artists examined include the Ohio Players\, Stevie Wonder\, Average White Band\, Kool and the Gang\, Earth\, Wind\, and Fire\, the Commodores\, Cameo\, Slave\, Zapp and Roger\, and many more. In addition\, subgenres including go go\, punk funk (coined by Rick James)\, funk rock\, and Bay Area funk will be covered. DESCRIPTION:Born in 1940\, Monmouth University alumnus Stephen Friedland performs under the name Brute Force. A lifelong singer-songwriter\, Friedland began his musical journey a songwriter for Bright Tunes Productions at the behest of doo-wop group The Tokens\, who had scored a hit with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Friedland joined the band as their keyboard player. For Bright Tunes\, Friedland composed the Chiffons’ 1965 hit “Nobody Knows What’s Goin’ On (in My Mind But Me).” He also composed hit songs for Del Shannon\, Peggy March\,  and The Cyrkle. \n\n\n \n\n\nIn 1968\, The Beatles famously invited musicians around the world to submit their work for consideration for release by Apple Records. Friedland answered the call with his original composition “The King of Fuh\,” which has emerged as one of the most notorious songs in annals of Apple Records history. Against all odds\, John Lennon and George Harrison opted to release the song\, which tells the tongue-in-cheek story about a monarch toiling in the land of Fuh. Under Harrison’s supervision\, the song was overdubbed with a string arrangement composed by John Barham. Given the song’s irreverent nature\, EMI (Apple’s parent company) refused to distribute the single\, of which only 1\,000 copies were pressed. In 2010\, more than four decades after its original rejection by EMI\, “The King of Fuh” was released by Apple Records on the Come and Get It compilation. Friedland is currently developing a play titled Color Talk for production.\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein\, renowned for his dynamic conducting and compositions like “West Side Story\,” remains a towering figure in 20th-century music. Explore the fascinating intersection of Bernstein’s genius and the mind with Dr. Richard Kogan in a TED-like lecture and piano performance. Trained at Juilliard in piano and Harvard Medical School in psychiatry\, Dr. Kogan\, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Artistic Director of the Music and Medicine program at Weill Cornell Medical Center\, offers a unique perspective. \nRichard Kogan’s concert lecture audiences hear him recount Bernstein’s life “from his first cigarette to his last dying day”\, interspersing oral history and anecdote with performances of “Somewhere”\, “Maria”\, “Tonight”\, “One Hand\, One Heart”\, “America” and more. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Dobbs decision\, which led to the loss of national abortion access\, has ushered in a new era for women’s health\, one marked by worsening health outcomes\, maternal health deserts\, uncertainty and fear. DESCRIPTION:ALICIA OSTRIKER has published 19 collections of poetry\, been twice nominated for the National Book Award\, and has twice received the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry\, among other honors. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Yale Review\, American Poetry Review\, Best American Poetry \, The Atlantic \, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals\, and has been translated into numerous languages including Hebrew and Arabic. Her most recent collections of poems are Waiting for the Light and The Volcano and After:Selected and New Poems 2002 – 2019 . She was New York State Poet Laureate for 2018 – 2021 and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2015 – 2020. \nJOAN LARKIN is the author of five previous collections of poetry\, including Blue Hanuman (2014); My Body: New and Selected Poems (2007)\, which received the Audre Lorde Award from the Publishing Triangle; Lambda Literary Award winner Cold River (1997); and Housework (1975). With Jaime Manrique\, Larkin translated Sor Juana’ s Love Poems\, a bilingual edition of Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz’ s poetry (1997). Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo\, one of opera’s most compelling young stars\, portrays Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas\, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle\, she fights to maintain her sanity\, and her soul\, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the Met premiere of Tesori’s kaleidoscopic score and a cast that also features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess’s husband. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guests Willie Nile and Emily Grove\, as well as an opening set by student/artist Amani Lillian and Prof. George Wurzbach. \nA pre-show reception will be held at 7 pm for all ticket holders\, doors open at 7:30 PM\n \nThe New York Times called Buffalo\, NY born Willie Nile “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years.” Bono\, Bruce Springsteen\, Pete Townshend\, Lou Reed\, Lucinda Williams\, Jim Jarmusch\, and Little Steven are among those who have sung his praises. He has toured across the U.S. with The Who and has sung with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. As the induction program from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame says: “His live performances are legendary.” His 2020 album New York At Night got rave reviews\, with Downbeat calling it a “sonic love letter to Gotham.” His newest studio album The Day The Earth Stood Still\, which features a duet with Steve Earle on the song “Blood On Your Hands” was released on Aug 13\, 2021. \nEmily Grove has had a varied and exciting musical journey\, from coffeehouses to Berklee College of Music\, to television appearances to tours in the UK and Europe. She has toured the UK\, Ireland\, US\, and Canada\, opening up for and performing with British artist David Ford. She also had her own headlining tour in Germany\, Bulgaria\, and England. She recently put on a sold- out Joni Mitchell show\, featuring some of Asbury Park’s most talented musicians. She’s performed with/opened up for Glen Burtnik\, Brett Michaels\, Dan Reed\, David Ford\, Jeffrey Gaines\, James Maddock\, John Lefler (Dashboard Confessional)\, Ari Hest\, and many others. The film moves continuously in and out of the Musée Picasso in Paris which has the largest existing collection dedicated to the painter with 6\,000 masterpieces and 200\,000 pieces of archive material\, and follows Picasso through the Parisian neighborhoods where he lived\, from the early days in ateliers with no heating to the large middle-class apartments where his success began: a physical and intellectual journey to gain a deeper understanding of his work and spirit. \n \nEstimated runtime: 90 minutes

DESCRIPTION:Michael Frankel\, the author of Hurricanes of Color and Monmouth University alumnus will be giving an artist’s talk and book-signing hosted by Prof. Ken Womack and Prof. Joe Rapolla. \nHurricanes of Color \nIn 1964\, fifteen-year-old Mike Frankel found himself among professional photojournalists covering a Beatles concert during the band’s first tour in the United States. A few years later\, he was a regular photographer at the Fillmore East\, a storied venue in classic rock. And in 1969\, he was onstage at Woodstock\, documenting one of the most important events in American music history. \nFeaturing Frankel’s stunning photographs of nearly every major rock figure from the 1960s and ’70s―including Led Zeppelin\, Pink Floyd\, the Rolling Stones\, Janis Joplin\, and the Grateful Dead―as well as many unpublished images of the Beatles\, Hurricanes ofColor chronicles an extraordinary moment.
