In this virtual event\, Womack explores the powerful\, life-affirming story of the former Beatle’s renaissance after five years of self-imposed retirement. Lennon’s final pivotal year would climax in several moments of creative triumph as he rediscovered his artistic self in dramatic fashion. Womack’s presentation is drawn from his forthcoming book John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life.  \nKenneth Womack is one of the world’s foremost writers and thinkers about the Beatles. In addition to such titles as Long and Winding Roads: The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles (2007) and The Beatles Encyclopedia: Everything Fab Four (2014)\, he is the author of a two-volume biography of the life and work of Beatles producer George Martin\, including Maximum Volume (2017) and Sound Pictures (2018). SUMMARY:ArtNOW Art+Feminism Wikipedia-Edit-a-thon
DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia is a worldwide collaborative encyclopedia project made up of a globalized network of volunteers who give their time to edit the site. Within this globalized network\, there still lacks a diversity of voices. “In a 2011 survey\, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research puts that number at 16% globally and 23% in the United States.”  (Mandiberg\, M.\, Prajapati\, S.\, & Schrock\, R.\, 2020). Who contributes to a database matters. Especially when in 2015\, that database was “the 7th most visited website in the world” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). A 2011 study from the Pew Research Center\, shows that “the more educated someone is\, the more likely he or she is to consult Wikipedia. Almost 70 percent of Americans with college degrees read Wikipedia” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). If college-educated people and students are using Wikipedia as a main source of information\, there is an argument for students learning how to edit and contribute to the online encyclopedia that they use. \nIt is increasingly important for cis and trans women\, gender-non-conforming people\, people of color\, and Indigenous communities to be written back into history. When information systems like Wikipedia systematically exclude aspects of the human experience\, our understanding of the world is incomplete. In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future\, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead\, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these\, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Young Endowed Lecture: \n“The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley”\nUber whistleblower Susan Fowler will give the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: “The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley” on Wednesday\, April 11\, at 3 p.m. in Pollak Theatre on the Monmouth University campus. \nSusan Fowler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in physics. Following jobs at two startup companies\, she was hired by Uber as a site reliability engineer. She resigned after one year and published a blogpost detailing the harassment and discrimination she had experienced as a result of rejecting her manager’s sexual advances. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigned and 20 employees were fired. Under Ariana Huffington’s supervision\, Uber’s Board of Directors hired former attorney general Eric Holder and his law firm\, which conducted an investigation and proposed sweeping changes. \nIn 2017\, Fowler was recognized as the Financial Times Person of the Year and one of Time magazine’s persons of the year: “The Silence Breakers.” Her Uber adventures are the subject of an upcoming movie. \nThis free event is open to the public. The school health office is often the first place that a child will present with a wound\, a lesion\, rash\, or an itch. The School Nurse’s assessment skills will determine whether the child returns to class or for further evaluation and treatment. DESCRIPTION:This course is one of the most popular continuing education programs offered by the School of Nursing. The instructor will focus on basic clinical evaluation of the school age child including both normal and abnormal findings. SUMMARY:Governor Richard J. Codey to Speak at Current Topics in Counseling Conference
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s 2017-2018 Public Servant-in-Residence\, former NJ Governor Richard J. Codey\, will be speaking at the Current Topics in Counseling Conference\nThe former governor’s session will run from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall Auditorium and is part of the Current Topics in Counseling Conference\, a full-day event facilitated by the Department of Professional Counseling’s Counseling Alumni Connection. \nGovernor Codey’s talk\, Mental Health and Public Policy\, will focus on how he became interested in making mental health a focal point of his public service. This includes stories of going undercover in psychiatric institutions and nursing facilities\, and doing frequent unannounced inspections of boarding homes\, both of which exposed the poor treatment of patients. Governor Codey and his wife have also been open about their struggles with post-partum depression. These varied experiences led him to pass legislation which made improvements in mental health public policy. \nAttendees can participate in Q&A following the talk. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. \nThis presentation is open to the public\, and for those attending the conference this session is included with registration.
