SUMMARY:History of Philadelphia Soul
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Sept. 9\, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the history of Philadelphia or “Philly” Soul\, which greatly impacted not only the sound of 70s soul but the development of disco. Its lush string arrangements\, horns\, seductive vocals\, and varied lyrical content added an element of sophistication to funk and soul\, paving the way for disco and the 1990s neo-soul movement.  \n The class will begin with influences such as Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” production\, Motown’s pop/soul gloss\, and James Brown’s “on the one” funk. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff\, the chief architects of the Philly Soul sound\, will be explored in depth\, as their compositions and productions resulted in classics by the O’Jays\, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes\, and Billy Paul. The duo would also form the Philadelphia International label\, whose legendary house band MFSB helped craft the sound. Along the way\, the sound helped create disco and influenced acts as diverse as David Bowie\, Hall and Oates\, and Jill Scott. In addition to multimedia presentations\, group discussions will further enhance understanding of this greatly influential genre. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:Entering its 2nd year on the virtual stage\, this year’s Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival will feature members of the Garden State Philharmonic performing music from Civil War era Marches through Ragtime\, Dixieland\, and Jazz featuring music by composers George Gershwin\, Scott Joplin\, C.W. Handy\, Duke Ellington\, and Louis Armstrong. The festival will also highlight selections and solos from The Monmouth University Chamber Choir\, a performance by the Blue Hawk House Band and a special reading by former United States Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Tretheway. The festival will premiere at 7:00 PM on July 1st and be available to view through July 31st. To receive the streaming link for the festival you will need to register. \nThe Monmouth University Music & Arts Festival is designed to provide Monmouth County communities and beyond\, along with the students\, faculty\, and staff at Monmouth University\, with the opportunity to enjoy a top-flight music and arts event each summer. \nIn 2022\, we are looking forward to presenting a robust program of offerings as the festival will host its inaugural in-person event. SUMMARY:The Fine Art of Denim
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION EXTENDED UNTIL OCTOBER 14!!\nDenim\, with all its symbols and dualities\, is a common item of clothing that unites many around the globe. Dad Jeans\, skinny jeans\, low riders\, bell bottoms\, boot leg\, wide leg\, no leg\, 501s\, 504s\, button fly\, stretch jeans\, the American dress code writ large across centuries. With so many styles available and ways to accessorize/manipulate the fabric\, denim has historically allowed for a freedom of expression representing both individuality and shifts in cultural movements. Denim comes in a wide range of blues and other colors\, washes\, fades and textures making it a perfect\, but not obvious\, medium to create fine artwork. Denim that was discarded can open up a new way of looking\, a startling way of seeing past the everyday. What we have abandoned\, will be presented again\, re-purposed from the lives we lived\, to moments we experience together “forever in blue jeans.” \nMonmouth University’s Center for the Arts is pleased to present The Fine Art of Denim\, a juried exhibition of artists who use recycled denim in new and creative ways. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – May 13 \, May 20 and May 27 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course\, taught by Michael Thomas\, provides attendees with an introduction to the craft of poetry\, while also carefully considering poems that have been deeply meaningful to our lives. \nOur current culture asks that we move quickly\, while poetry demands the opposite– that we slow down and explore life experiences with careful reflection and deeper understanding. \nWhile you may not be an experienced reader or writer of poems\, this course will introduce methods of writing and reading that we hope will help you to take steps in developing an ear and eye for great poems and how\, by inhabiting the poems you experience joys in reading. \n“Poetry and poetry alone has saved my life\,” wrote the poet\, Anne Sexton. There is evidence of lyric poetry in every language and in every culture throughout history. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “A Delicate Balance: Global Communities and the Natural World” by analyzing the message and impact the 2018 film\, Woman at War. \nSet in Iceland the film is a drama\, with moments of whimsical comedy\, about Halla\, a 50-year old environmental activist determined to halt the construction of a new aluminum smelter near Reykjavik by destroying power lines and thwarting negotiations between the government of Iceland and a corporation and community eager to see the contracts awarded. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – April 1\, 8 and 15 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three session virtual course\, taught by Jay Sweet\, provides participants with techniques to help give directions and creative elements that will help unlock the potential of active and aspiring songwriters. The workshop will also provide a supportive outlet for those songwriters looking to share their works for evaluation or for those looking to learn from others’ processes. \n Instructor: Jay Sweet is a Professor of Music who has produced several pieces for television and radio. He is also the proud owner and director of Sweet Music Academy\, where he has helped to train hundreds of musicians.Whether you are a hobbyist or someone looking to pursue a career in songwriting\, this course will help you find new avenues and directions to enhance your craft. For those who wish to do so\, there will also be opportunities for students to share their songs in a workshop setting. \nThroughout the course\, Sweet will provide examples and analysis of songs\, techniques\, and creative concepts that will be presented. Over the three weeks\, we will discuss the process of developing and recording a song and the many different avenues that can be taken to make your music polished and presentable. \nZoom link will be provided upon registration.
