DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the For Sama (Syria\, 2019). \nFOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:The Souls Shot Portrait Project pairs fine artists with families and friends of victims of gun violence. The artists create portraits using diverse approaches and emphasize the individuality and uniqueness of the victims portrayed. The project began in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, in 2016\, and the resulting exhibitions have featured many talented artists throughout the years. \nThe mission of The Souls Shot Portrait Project is to bring attention to and memorialize the lives lost and their families’ lives tragically altered due to gun violence. Too many times\, those killed by violent means are remembered by the catastrophe of their final days. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The magnificent Pulitzer Prize–winning work that brought the wrenching experience of slavery into the literature of our time\, enlarging our comprehension of America’s original sin.  Upon the original publication of Beloved in 1987\, John Leonard wrote in the Los Angeles Times: “I can’t imagine American literature without it.” Nearly two decades later\, The New York Times chose Beloved as the best American novel of the previous fifty years. \nSet in post–Civil War Ohio\, it is the story of Sethe\, an escaped slave who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has withstood savagery and not gone mad. Sethe\, who now lives in a small house on the edge of town with her daughter\, Denver\, her mother-in-law\, Baby Suggs\, and a disturbing\, mesmerizing apparition who calls herself Beloved. Sethe works at “beating back the past\,” but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly: in her memory; in Denver’s fear of the world outside the house; in the sadness that consumes Baby Suggs; in the arrival of Paul D\, a fellow former slave; and\, most powerfully\, in Beloved\, whose childhood belongs to the hideous logic of slavery and who has now come from the “place over there” to claim retribution for what she lost and for what was taken from her. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2018 film\, Shoplifters. \nShoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed\, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando\, it is about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. \nShoplifters premiered at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it won the Palme d’Or. The film Shoplifters won three Mainichi Film Awards\, including Best Film\, and the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film\, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by  Dr. Rekha Datta\, professor in the department of Political Science and Dr. Frank Cipriani\, specialist professor in the department of World Languages and Literature. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. The Crying of Lot 49 is Thomas Pynchon’s classic satire of modern America\, about Oedipa Maas\, a woman who finds herself enmeshed in what would appear to be an international conspiracy. When her ex-lover\, wealthy real-estate tycoon Pierce Inverarity\, dies and designates her the coexecutor of his estate\, California housewife Oedipa Maas is thrust into a paranoid mystery of metaphors\, symbols\, and the United States Postal Service. Schmidt\, Esq. has served as a professor and instructor for over thirty years. A graduate of Emerson College and Rutgers University School of Law\, she prides herself on guiding students to master all areas of communication. The warm reception for her self-published novel\, Treasure\, based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest\, inspired her to retire from a twenty-year law practice to follow creative pursuits. Her texts\, Talk it Out: Mastering Critical Discourse and No Words: Mastering Nonverbal Communication assist students and professionals with critical thinking\, perception and public presentation. Among her other works is her photo-exploration\, To A Lighthouse which delights juveniles and adults with beautiful photos of each New Jersey lighthouse and engaging family-bonding exercises. She serves as an adjunct at both Kean and Monmouth Universities\, offers private workshops for professionals\, operates a portrait studio\, manages a virtual art gallery\, and continues to publish fiction and nonfiction work.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Record Club: Simon and Garfunkel\, Bridge over Troubled Water
DESCRIPTION:It’s just like book club but with albums! With new advances in technology\, the way we consume music through our devices\, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora\, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. This event will feature Simon and Garfunkel\, Bridge over Troubled Water. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. However\, we are also committed to continuing offering access virtually to Tuesday Night Record Club for all our new audiences! You can register now for Zoom access to the event.
