SUMMARY:Angela Kariotis: Rehearsing for the Future: Performance Technologies for Healing Centered Education
DESCRIPTION:Angela Kariotis is a community engaged culture worker and educator building creative programs serving the needs of cities\, institutions\, and students of all ages for public good. Kariotis integrates restorative practices for a transformative learning experience and a healing centered education. Using a design thinking framework and appreciative inquiry for experiential learning\, Kariotis synthesizes art-making for social entrepreneurship. Angela is winner of a NJSCA fellowship in playwriting\, a National Performance Network Creation Fund Award\, and a Tennessee Williams Theater Fellowship. As a performance artist\, she’s been presented by venues such as UCLA\, University of Texas at Austin\, People’s Light\, Legion Arts in Iowa\, and Contact Theater in Manchester\, UK. Kariotis is Curriculum Director and Facilitator of Walking the Beat\, a national arts education program interrogating the history of police\, the way we police each other\, and ideating alternative cultures of care. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a starry cast\, including tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role\, soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Élisabeth de Valois\, and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Eboli. Bass-baritones Eric Owens and John Relyea are Philippe II and the Grand Inquisitor\, and baritone Étienne Dupuis rounds out the principal cast as Rodrigue. Verdi’s masterpiece receives a monumental new staging by David McVicar that marks his 11th Met production\, placing him among the most prolific and popular directors in recent Met memory.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Patti Smith\, Just Kids.\n \nPatti Smith’s definitive memoir: an evocative\, honest and moving coming-of-age story of her extraordinary relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe. In 1967\, a chance meeting between two young people led to a romance and a lifelong friendship that would carry each to international success never dreamed of. The backdrop is Brooklyn\, Chelsea Hotel\, Max’s Kansas City\, Scribner’s Bookstore\, Coney Island\, Warhol’s Factory and the whole city resplendent. Among their friends\, literary lights\, musicians and artists such as Harry Smith\, Bobby Neuwirth\, Allen Ginsberg\, Sandy Daley\, Sam Shepherd\, William Burroughs\, etc. It was a heightened time politically and culturally; the art and music worlds exploding and colliding. In the midst of all this two kids made a pact to always care for one another. Scrappy\, romantic\, committed to making art\, they prodded and provided each other with faith and confidence during the hungry years–the days of cous-cous and lettuce soup. \nJust Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. Beautifully written\, this is a profound portrait of two young artists\, often hungry\, sated only by art and experience. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with “Glee” and “30 Rock” star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek\, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. The PBS series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook\,” the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award\, was broadcast for three seasons and is available on DVD. SUMMARY:History of Slavery in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. SUMMARY:Souls Shot Portrait Project
DESCRIPTION:The Souls Shot Portrait Project pairs fine artists with families and friends of victims of gun violence. The artists create portraits using diverse approaches and emphasize the individuality and uniqueness of the victims portrayed. The project began in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, in 2016\, and the resulting exhibitions have featured many talented artists throughout the years. \nThe mission of The Souls Shot Portrait Project is to bring attention to and memorialize the lives lost and their families’ lives tragically altered due to gun violence. Too many times\, those killed by violent means are remembered by the catastrophe of their final days. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The magnificent Pulitzer Prize–winning work that brought the wrenching experience of slavery into the literature of our time\, enlarging our comprehension of America’s original sin.  Upon the original publication of Beloved in 1987\, John Leonard wrote in the Los Angeles Times: “I can’t imagine American literature without it.” Nearly two decades later\, The New York Times chose Beloved as the best American novel of the previous fifty years. \nSet in post–Civil War Ohio\, it is the story of Sethe\, an escaped slave who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has withstood savagery and not gone mad. Sethe\, who now lives in a small house on the edge of town with her daughter\, Denver\, her mother-in-law\, Baby Suggs\, and a disturbing\, mesmerizing apparition who calls herself Beloved. Sethe works at “beating back the past\,” but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly: in her memory; in Denver’s fear of the world outside the house; in the sadness that consumes Baby Suggs; in the arrival of Paul D\, a fellow former slave; and\, most powerfully\, in Beloved\, whose childhood belongs to the hideous logic of slavery and who has now come from the “place over there” to claim retribution for what she lost and for what was taken from her. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. Three sparkling scenes accompanied by the music of three essential composers\, feature the styles of the three dance schools that have contributed to making George Balanchine a legend of modern ballet. \nThis glamorous triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, and created as an homage to the cities and dance schools of Paris\, New York and St. Petersburg that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2018 film\, Shoplifters. \nShoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed\, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando\, it is about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. \nShoplifters premiered at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it won the Palme d’Or. The film Shoplifters won three Mainichi Film Awards\, including Best Film\, and the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film\, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by  Dr. Rekha Datta\, professor in the department of Political Science and Dr. Frank Cipriani\, specialist professor in the department of World Languages and Literature. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Jan. 27\, Feb. 3\, and Feb. 10 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nFew musicians have shaped contemporary music as extensively as Stevie Wonder\, a singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and musician who bridges so many genres he has virtually created his own. From his beginnings as an 11-year-old prodigy signed to Motown to his unsurpassed run of masterpiece albums in the 1970s\, Wonder has continually expanded the boundaries of soul and R&B. \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the artistic development from his earliest days through his 1970s “classic period” and beyond. In addition\, the class explores the chief influences on his distinctive style such as Ray Charles\, Marvin Gaye\, and Tonto’s Exploding Head Band. Finally\, Wonder’s vast impact on music will be studied through his influence on other artists. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Thomas Pynchon\, The Crying of Lot 49. The Crying of Lot 49 is Thomas Pynchon’s classic satire of modern America\, about Oedipa Maas\, a woman who finds herself enmeshed in what would appear to be an international conspiracy. When her ex-lover\, wealthy real-estate tycoon Pierce Inverarity\, dies and designates her the coexecutor of his estate\, California housewife Oedipa Maas is thrust into a paranoid mystery of metaphors\, symbols\, and the United States Postal Service. Traveling across Southern California\, she meets some extremely interesting characters\, and attains a not inconsiderable amount of self-knowledge. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person.
