SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: The Prophetic Quest
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Landau: The Prophetic Quest\, An Exhibit of Selected Drawings and paintings by renowned American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau.  The selected works on display were completed by the artist in preparation for his stained glass masterpiece\, The Prophetic Quest\, a series of ten monumental stained glass windows housed in the Keneseth Israel synagogue\, just north of Philadelphia. In addition to the artwork\, copies of the recently published book; The Prophetic Quest: The Stained Glass Windows of Jacob Landau\, will also be on hand for review. Copies of the book are also available for sale at the University Bookstore. \nDesigned by the renowned American artist Jacob Landau\, The Prophetic Quest encompasses ten masterful abstract pieces of stained glass that depict the lives and words of the biblical prophets\, each towering nearly twenty-five feet high and spanning five feet across. Featuring essays recounting Landau’s vision\, the history of his project\, and detailed interpretative commentary on each window\, this book presents an immersive experience of Landau’s religious masterwork. Personal reflections written by artists\, art historians\, poets\, clergy\, and congregants about their experience of The Prophetic Quest round out the volume with new ways to view and appreciate Landau’s creation. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16\, and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to have over sixty one-person shows\, featuring a wide range of drawings and paintings. The recipient of numerous awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants\, many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nThe exhibition features a selection of some ten works. All are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Jewish Culture Studies Program and the Honors School of Monmouth University.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Adult Education Series Earth Day lecture with Heide Estes introducing the topic of Climate Crisis: What Can We Do? \nClimate crisis is real\, and is constantly in the news\, and triggers climate grief and climate anxiety. We need to take action\, and fast … but how? We need change at all levels: individual\, corporate\, and governmental\, and this lecture will provide strategies for how to engage in all three areas. You will learn about the importance of talking about climate with friends and family members\, voting with climate change in mind\, and disinvesting from fossil fuels — via your retirement fund\, your workplace\, anywhere you have influence. You will find out about ways you can change your diet\, your home\, and your transportation to lower your own carbon footprint\, and provide an example to those people you’re talking with. You will learn about resources you can use to get educated\, and to stay up to date with the latest developments. After Men At Work\, Hay embarked on a solo career\, debuting in 1987 with Looking For Jack and continued to release critically acclaimed solo material throughout the 2000’s\, Hay contributed I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You to the soundtrack of Garden State and has had roles in other cult movies and television shows. \nHe has written and released some 13 solo albums\, the latest being “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” an album of cover material\, released through Nashville-based Compass Records\, who Colin has worked with since 2003. \nHe has an a new album “Now and The Evermore” due for release March 18. \n \nMore about Colin Hay at http://www.colinhay.com/

DESCRIPTION:Rivka Galchen is the recipient of a William Saroyan International Prize for Writing and a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award\, among other honors. She writes regularly for The New Yorker\, whose editors selected her for their list of “20 Under 40” American fiction writers in 2010. Her debut novel\, Atmospheric Disturbances (2008)\, and her story collection\, American Innovations (2014)\, were both New York Times Best Books of the Year. She received an MD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Galchen divides her time between Montreal and New York City. Her latest novel\, Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch\, was released by FSG in June. \n

All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet. On a summer’s day in 1596\, a young girl in Stratford-upon-Avon takes to her bed with a sudden fever. Her twin brother\, Hamnet\, searches everywhere for help. Why is nobody at home? \nTheir mother\, Agnes\, is over a mile away\, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London. Neither parent knows that Hamnet will not survive the week. Hamnet is a novel inspired by the son of a famous playwright: a boy whose life has been all but forgotten\, but whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays ever written. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. From portraits of his mother\, who died when the painter was only 8 years old\, to the female admirers who helped him on his road to success\, Raphael\, (1483-1520)\, was able to portray an ideal of celestial beauty\, and to focus his gaze more on the psychology of his subjects’ features than on their physical form\, so that their personalities emerge in a striking manner. Angela is winner of a NJSCA fellowship in playwriting\, a National Performance Network Creation Fund Award\, and a Tennessee Williams Theater Fellowship. As a performance artist\, she’s been presented by venues such as UCLA\, University of Texas at Austin\, People’s Light\, Legion Arts in Iowa\, and Contact Theater in Manchester\, UK. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a starry cast\, including tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role\, soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Élisabeth de Valois\, and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Eboli. Bass-baritones Eric Owens and John Relyea are Philippe II and the Grand Inquisitor\, and baritone Étienne Dupuis rounds out the principal cast as Rodrigue. Verdi’s masterpiece receives a monumental new staging by David McVicar that marks his 11th Met production\, placing him among the most prolific and popular directors in recent Met memory.

All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Patti Smith\, Just Kids.\n \nPatti Smith’s definitive memoir: an evocative\, honest and moving coming-of-age story of her extraordinary relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe. In 1967\, a chance meeting between two young people led to a romance and a lifelong friendship that would carry each to international success never dreamed of. The backdrop is Brooklyn\, Chelsea Hotel\, Max’s Kansas City\, Scribner’s Bookstore\, Coney Island\, Warhol’s Factory and the whole city resplendent. Among their friends\, literary lights\, musicians and artists such as Harry Smith\, Bobby Neuwirth\, Allen Ginsberg\, Sandy Daley\, Sam Shepherd\, William Burroughs\, etc. It was a heightened time politically and culturally; the art and music worlds exploding and colliding. In the midst of all this two kids made a pact to always care for one another. Scrappy\, romantic\, committed to making art\, they prodded and provided each other with faith and confidence during the hungry years–the days of cous-cous and lettuce soup. \nJust Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. DESCRIPTION:The Souls Shot Portrait Project pairs fine artists with families and friends of victims of gun violence. The artists create portraits using diverse approaches and emphasize the individuality and uniqueness of the victims portrayed. The project began in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, in 2016\, and the resulting exhibitions have featured many talented artists throughout the years. \nThe mission of The Souls Shot Portrait Project is to bring attention to and memorialize the lives lost and their families’ lives tragically altered due to gun violence. The magnificent Pulitzer Prize–winning work that brought the wrenching experience of slavery into the literature of our time\, enlarging our comprehension of America’s original sin.  Upon the original publication of Beloved in 1987\, John Leonard wrote in the Los Angeles Times: “I can’t imagine American literature without it.” Nearly two decades later\, The New York Times chose Beloved as the best American novel of the previous fifty years. \nSet in post–Civil War Ohio\, it is the story of Sethe\, an escaped slave who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has withstood savagery and not gone mad. Sethe\, who now lives in a small house on the edge of town with her daughter\, Denver\, her mother-in-law\, Baby Suggs\, and a disturbing\, mesmerizing apparition who calls herself Beloved. Sethe works at “beating back the past\,” but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly: in her memory; in Denver’s fear of the world outside the house; in the sadness that consumes Baby Suggs; in the arrival of Paul D\, a fellow former slave; and\, most powerfully\, in Beloved\, whose childhood belongs to the hideous logic of slavery and who has now come from the “place over there” to claim retribution for what she lost and for what was taken from her. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. SUMMARY:History of Slavery in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:It’s just like book club but with albums! With new advances in technology\, the way we consume music through our devices\, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora\, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. This event will feature Prince’s Sign o’ the Times. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. However\, we are also committed to continuing offering access virtually to Tuesday Night Record Club for all our new audiences! You can register now for Zoom access to the event.
