SUMMARY:The Boxmasters - Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2007 by Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew\, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences\, but most importantly\, the rock and roll of the 1960’s. Listening to The Boxmasters\, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles\, Byrds and Beach Boys\, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and Big Star. Since forming The Boxmasters\, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band\, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters\, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration\, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core\, there is a backbeat\, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion. \nAs a touring band\, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top\, Steve Miller\, George Thorogood and Kid Rock The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner\, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”\, Springfield\, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville\, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm’s “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock\, New York were highlight performances for the band\, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015\, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

She will be teaching a step-by-step guided oil painting course the neo-classical in Erlanger Gardens on the campus of Monmouth University. The class will cover compositional structure perspective\, color theory\, diverse application of materials and most of all the process of “capturing the LIGHT in the open air like the Impressionists.” New Wave Pochade Easels will be provided to all participants for use during your exclusive lesson\, along with a comfortable pleinair chair to relax and paint at during the class. \nAll levels of experience in oil painting are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes revolutions begin quietly.\n\nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies. \n\nFormed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar\, Margo Timmins on vocals\, Peter Timmins on drums\, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass\, the band has sparkled over the course of 26 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete\,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.”\n\nUnlike most long-lasting groups\, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. As the oldest son of Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Guthrie\, Arlo made his first appearance onstage at age 13 and built a renowned career touring North American for six decades. In October 2020\, Guthrie announced his retirement from the road amid the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic. Two years later\, he’s had enough of retirement and launched a new company Gut3 Productions with his wife Marti Ladd to present the new “In Conversation with Arlo Guthrie” four-part series. \n“These engagements won’t be musical events\,” said Guthrie. “We’ll be setting this as an interview with talking\, joking\, telling stories…as well as answering questions from the audience. Arlo grew up surrounded by renowned folk musicians: Pete Seeger\, Leadbelly\, Cisco Houston\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott\, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee\, and the Weavers. Since the age of 13\, Arlo became absorbed in the music that was shaping the world. By the age of 20\, he was touring overseas. \nA natural-born storyteller and accomplished musician\, Arlo attracted and surprised audiences all over the world with his unique folk style. Arlo’s career soared with his debut of “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. Later that year\, he was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the “Best Folk Performance” category for the studio version of the song on his debut album\, Alice’s Restaurant. The album went Gold (1969) and then Platinum (1986)\, and was adapted into a film by director Arthur Penn and released a few days after Arlo performed at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. \nArlo has released 32 acclaimed albums\, has appeared in notable TV shows and movies throughout the decades\, and led a lauded six-decade-long touring career performing on the world’s most distinguished stages. \nAbout Bob Santelli \nBob Santelli is the author of more than a dozen books on American music\, including\, Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art\, Words and Wisdom (w/co-author Nora Guthrie) and Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.  Santelli is currently the Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University and the Director of Popular Music at Oregon State University. He also was the Founding Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles\, the former CEO and Artistic Director of Experience Music Project in Seattle\, and the Vice-President of Education and Public Programs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. A GRAMMY winner\, Santelli co-produced with Smithsonian Folkways box sets and books on Woody Guthrie\, Lead Belly\, and Pete Seeger.  He also was one of the executive producers of the public television series In Performance at the White House during the Obama administration and created music education programs with First Lady Michelle Obama. \n

SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: The Prophetic Quest
DESCRIPTION:An art exhibition that explores a range of works over a long career\, created by the American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau. The exhibition features a selection of some eighteen works. All are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings\, and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. \nReception: Thursday\, April 13\, from 4– 6 pm \nAbout Jacob Landau:\nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to have over sixty one-person shows\, featuring a wide range of drawings and paintings. The recipient of numerous awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants\, many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nFor Jacob Landau “art enables us to see the world whole and undivided.” And at its center lies the artist’s desire for justice in this world. The current exhibit reveals that his entire career was driven by such a quest from an early work with conte crayon\, “Two Women in Market” and his “Mine Strike at Auchel” through an “Einstein” portrait\, as well as watercolor pochoirs of “Malachi” and “Isaiah” who call for justice and whose bold colors and sinuous lines derive from their respective stained-glass windows that Landau created for the Keneseth Israel Synagogue in Elkins Park\, PA (just outside Philadelphia)\, two of ten windows\, each towering 5’x20’\, that flank the prayer hall. \nLandau’s Isaiah and Malachi watercolors exhilarate\, even as they confront the viewer. We realize that the prophet does not predict the future but reveals the present\, witnessing injustice\, condemning it\, and proclaiming alternatives—actions. Clearly\, Isaiah’s words pierced the artist’s heart: “Seek justice\, relieve the oppressed.” \n And we see Landau’s struggle in his quest as a citizen of our world and as an artist in a series of sketches and preparatory drawings for his portrait of Malachi as well as those of Amos\, Hosea\, and Jeremiah. We are also given an image of a world without justice\, Ezekiel’s Vison of Dry Bones\, and a glimpse of a promised new world to come\, New Jerusalem. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Curator Victoria Reis\, Founder & Artistic Director of Transformer Arts Organization\, will highlight innovative contemporary platforms artists and arts organizations have initiated nationally to develop\, create\, and present art. Showcasing a range of visual art practices\, including performative\, experiential\, social\, and pedagogical\, Do You Know Where Your Art Comes From? investigates current and future models of art organizing. \nTransformer is a Washington DC based arts organization that develops multi-faceted exhibition and program platforms to advance emerging contemporary artists & arts practices. \nVictoria Reis is a curator\, writer\, and arts organizer who has been actively supporting contemporary visual artists and arts organizations within local\, national\, and international contexts since 1991. \nIn 2002\, Reis co-founded Transformer\, an internationally recognized non-profit visual arts organization based in Washington\, DC. Since 2006\, Reis has been leading Transformer as its Executive & Artistic Director\, curating and presenting substantial exhibitions and programs in support of emerging artists\, innovative cultural production\, and new & best practices within contemporary visual art. Reis has established comprehensive cultural partnerships & collaborations with an extensive range of arts\, educational\, and diplomatic organizations and institutions. She has launched and advanced the careers of several hundred artists. \nIn May 2017\, Reis expanded Transformer’s programming to include Siren Arts\, an Asbury Park\, NJ based summer residency program for emerging visual artists working within the performance art discipline. Siren Arts will be presenting its 7th season of programming summer 2023. Reis is a Founding Member of Common Field\, a national network of art spaces and artist-led initiatives. She has been a member of ArtTable since 2000. DESCRIPTION:It’s just like book club but with albums! With new advances in technology\, the way we consume music through our devices\, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora\, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. This event will feature The Kinks’ Are the Village Green Preservation Society. \nThis event will be held in person at The Great Hall Auditorium and will also be available remotely via Zoom. When you register you will be provided the ZOOM meeting link to join the conversation.  \nFree and open to the public\, but registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:Verdi’s Shakespearean comedy features a brilliant ensemble cast in Robert Carsen’s celebrated staging. Baritone Michael Volle sings his first Verdi role at the Met as the caddish knight Falstaff\, gleefully tormented by a trio of clever women who deliver his comeuppance. Reuniting after their acclaimed performances in the production’s 2019 run are soprano Ailyn Pérez as Alice Ford\, soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano as Meg Page\, and mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Mistress Quickly. Soprano Hera Hyesang Park and tenor Bogdan Volkov are the young couple Nannetta and Fenton\, and Daniele Rustioni conducts.

SUMMARY:The American Soldier
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Taurel (“Nurse Jackie\,” “Blue Bloods”) is the creator and star of the Off-Broadway Award-nominated solo play\, “The American Soldier\,” based on true events and documentary letters written by veterans and their family members from the American Revolution through current-day Afghanistan. It honors the experiences of veterans and their families and explores the internal struggles they face when returning home from combat. “The American Soldier” has been nominated for the Amnesty International Award for theatre excellence \, received 4 stars internationally\, and has been featured in The Huffington Post\, The Washington Post and Time Out. \nThere will also be a FREE matinee performance of this show at 3 PM.
