SUMMARY:British Invasion Part 1: Beginnings and Influences
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Tuesdays – September 19 & 26 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nBefore the Beatles kicked off the British Invasion of the US\, a musical revolution was underway in the UK. Teens reveled in listening to a specific type of American music: rock and roll from Elvis Presley\, Fats Domino\, Little Richard\, and more. Early Motown reached the Merseyside\, along with records by little-known (in America) R&B artists. At the same time\, James Brown and Ray Charles scored hits both in the US and the UK. However\, folk also attracted teens’ attention through a genre called skiffle\, a style that would greatly influence budding musicians such as John Lennon and Jimmy Page. \nThis two-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole examines the influences of these genres on what would become the British Invasion\, which would ultimately transform music worldwide. The class will survey the artists that would predate the Beatles: Billy Fury\, Cliff Richard\, the Shadows\, Tommy Steele\, The Vipers Skiffle Group\, and much more. It will reveal just how different the UK and US charts looked prior to the British Invasion\, and how these artists and numerous genres contributed to the transformation from 1950s to 1960s sounds. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

DESCRIPTION:Closing Reception and lecture/walking tour: Thursday December 7 – Tour begins at 4pm; Reception (light refreshments) from 5-6pm \nThis retrospective show\, PAT CRESSON Taking a Leap –The Power of the Natural World 45 Years of Creative Work is a combined visual statement of over 45 years of artmaking. It covers 21 different categories ranging from painting\, drawing\, collage\, printmaking\, and digital imaging to sculpture. CRESSON have always been interested in a broad range of art topics\, styles and techniques and has followed her heart and not limited herself to just one or two topics\, series or styles. \nAncient cultures and architecture\, botanicals\, maps & ephemera\, the landscape\, weather systems and climate\, insects\, birds\, Asian culture\, kimonos\, bonsai design\, endangered species\, marine life and the seashore – these are all topics that have interested her for many years and she returns again and again to them for inspiration. Using these as inspiration and metaphor her interest is also in the exploration of human interaction and the natural world – the navigation between what is hidden and what is revealed. \nRecently she has concentrated her explorations into the connection between geometry and Nature. She has explored this by juxtaposing hard edge geometric design form\, scientific illustrations\, and pattern against organic landscape shapes\, portions of sketches\, and textured paint. \nMany of the artist’s pieces combine drawing\, type\, painting\, graphic design\, digital imagery\, and original photography. A majority of her prints and images over the years have reflected interests in nature and landscape\, legend\, myth\, storytelling\, and spirituality. In painting\, the artist’s use of oils\, wax\, and mixed media enhances both the collage look of her work and her atmospheric approach to color. In printmaking\, her use of chine-collé and the collograph process heightens the variety of textures and colors in her work. Whether one looks at the paintings and the prints on display here\, or the drawings and digital images available on the artist’s website\, there are opposing areas of abstract color\, a wide array of textures and transparencies\, and recognizable images (or in some cases\, the vague suggestion of images). Color is one of the artist’s strengths\, and her use of it ranges from the poetic to the dramatic. The paintings\, which tend to be more abstract than the prints\, contain some of her most ethereal color combinations. SUMMARY:Guajiros Retratos de Otoño\, an exhibition of work by Lázaro Niebla
DESCRIPTION:Lázaro Niebla\, a resident of Trinidad de Cuba\, documents the connection to the past through reverse woodcut portraits of those that understand it best: his elders. His process begins by collecting discarded colonial window panels that were used to protect the homes in Trinidad de Cuba during the Spanish colonization. He then photographs his subjects\, capturing them in a spontaneous moment. Working off of his photograph\, Lázaro meticulously carves layer after layer from the repurposed panel\, exposing the perfectly preserved wood under the surface. Using acrylic paint\, Lázaro adds touches of color to the piece\, choosing to leave the skin of the subject wood tone — connecting the person he has chosen to portray to the material that he has chosen to work with. The life of the tree\, the window shutter\, the home it protected\, the subject portrayed\, and the artist are all represented in each piece of art. \nArtist Demonstration: September 27 from 6pm – 8pm |Great Hall Auditorium\nLázaro Niebla\, Cuban wood sculptor\, explains his concept\, technique\, tools and cultural aspects of his work.  He’ll show an example of a work in progress and how he accomplishes the carved details of his subjects to create the multi-dimensional texture of his works.\n\nNEW!!! SUMMARY:The Boxmasters - Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2007 by Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew\, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences\, but most importantly\, the rock and roll of the 1960’s. Listening to The Boxmasters\, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles\, Byrds and Beach Boys\, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and Big Star. Since forming The Boxmasters\, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band\, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters\, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration\, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core\, there is a backbeat\, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion. \nAs a touring band\, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top\, Steve Miller\, George Thorogood and Kid Rock The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner\, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”\, Springfield\, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville\, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm’s “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock\, New York were highlight performances for the band\, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015\, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

DESCRIPTION:Sometimes revolutions begin quietly.\n\nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies. \n\nFormed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar\, Margo Timmins on vocals\, Peter Timmins on drums\, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass\, the band has sparkled over the course of 26 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete\,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.”\n\nUnlike most long-lasting groups\, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to the podium to conduct Blanchard’s second Met premiere. Director James Robinson\, whose productions of Fire Shut Up in My Bones and Porgy and Bess brought down the house\, oversees the staging. Camille A. As the oldest son of Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Guthrie\, Arlo made his first appearance onstage at age 13 and built a renowned career touring North American for six decades. In October 2020\, Guthrie announced his retirement from the road amid the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic. Two years later\, he’s had enough of retirement and launched a new company Gut3 Productions with his wife Marti Ladd to present the new “In Conversation with Arlo Guthrie” four-part series. \n“These engagements won’t be musical events\,” said Guthrie. “We’ll be setting this as an interview with talking\, joking\, telling stories…as well as answering questions from the audience. We’ll have some fun\, and we’ll talk about serious subjects\, as well”. \nWhat’s Left Of Me features Arlo in conversation with Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music and includes rarely seen video footage along with an audience Q&A. Arlo grew up surrounded by renowned folk musicians: Pete Seeger\, Leadbelly\, Cisco Houston\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott\, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee\, and the Weavers. Since the age of 13\, Arlo became absorbed in the music that was shaping the world. By the age of 20\, he was touring overseas. \nA natural-born storyteller and accomplished musician\, Arlo attracted and surprised audiences all over the world with his unique folk style. Arlo’s career soared with his debut of “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. Later that year\, he was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the “Best Folk Performance” category for the studio version of the song on his debut album\, Alice’s Restaurant. The album went Gold (1969) and then Platinum (1986)\, and was adapted into a film by director Arthur Penn and released a few days after Arlo performed at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. \nArlo has released 32 acclaimed albums\, has appeared in notable TV shows and movies throughout the decades\, and led a lauded six-decade-long touring career performing on the world’s most distinguished stages. \nAbout Bob Santelli \nBob Santelli is the author of more than a dozen books on American music\, including\, Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art\, Words and Wisdom (w/co-author Nora Guthrie) and Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.  Santelli is currently the Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University and the Director of Popular Music at Oregon State University. He also was the Founding Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles\, the former CEO and Artistic Director of Experience Music Project in Seattle\, and the Vice-President of Education and Public Programs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. A GRAMMY winner\, Santelli co-produced with Smithsonian Folkways box sets and books on Woody Guthrie\, Lead Belly\, and Pete Seeger.  He also was one of the executive producers of the public television series In Performance at the White House during the Obama administration and created music education programs with First Lady Michelle Obama. \n

DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – April 20\, April 27\, May 4* | 7:30 – 9:00 PM (Please note due to illness this class has been postponed one week) \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole explores the question – just what is rock?\nRock’s roots extend far beyond America\, with sounds from various countries encompassing the building blocks of the genre. This course provides an overview of some of the cultures and traditions that contributed to the melting pot that is rock music. Africa\, Cuba\, Italy\, and Mexico are among the places visited on this three-week musical tour. In addition to multimedia presentations\, class discussion and activities will enable attendees to identify elements of these cultures in rock and roll. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.
