SUMMARY:Roger McGuinn Music Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic of rock history with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and The Byrds co-founder\, Roger McGuinn\, as he shares rare video\, unforgettable stories\, and the songs that defined a generation. \nBy 1964\, Roger McGuinn was already an experienced figure in both the New York and Los Angeles music scenes when he co-founded the band that would become the Byrds\, alongside Gene Clark and David Crosby. Before forming the Byrds\, McGuinn had toured and performed as a guitarist and banjo player with the Limeliters\, the Chad Mitchell Trio\, and Bobby Darin. He also served as musical director for Judy Collins #3. After the Byrds disbanded in 1973\, McGuinn embarked on a solo career\, releasing five albums with Columbia Records and continuing to tour. \nThis workshop entry is free with the purchase of a concert ticket. Please call the Box Office at 732-263-6889 to get your complimentary ticket.

SUMMARY:'60s Girl Groups\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: April 23\, 28\, & 30\, 2026 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThe early 1960s began the girl group renaissance\, with prominent Brill Building songwriters and emerging producers such as Phil Spector crafting hits. Motown would further set the template\, with Martha and the Vandellas\, the Velvettes\, and the Marvelettes inspiring even British Invasion groups.  Perhaps no one defined the girl group aesthetic like the Supremes\, one of the most successful (and influential) acts of the 1960s. \n\n\nAs the next decade loomed\, the girl group genre was not as prominent on the charts.  Yet the Honey Cone\, the Emotions\, the Three Degrees\, and LaBelle added a thoroughly modern spin on the girl group sound\, adding elements of disco and funk.  The Pointer Sisters would achieve even greater success in the late 1970s and 1980s\, with the 1990s bringing a new wave of groups such as En Vogue\, the Spice Girls\, and SWV.  The trend continues today with an international flair\, as the hugely popular K-Pop genre has redrawn the blueprint with artists such as Blackpink and Twice. Part two travels through these eras\, exploring why the girl group genre continues to thrive. Multimedia presentations and discussions will help define how girl groups changed music and pop culture. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:James Joyce\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! This week’s book is A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. \nLike much of James Joyce’s work\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a fictional re-creation of the Irish writer’s own life and early environment. The experiences of the novel’s young hero\, Stephen Dedalus\, unfold in astonishingly vivid scenes that seem freshly recalled from life and provide a powerful portrait of the coming of age of a young man of unusual intelligence\, sensitivity\, and character. \nThe interest of the novel is deepened by Joyce’s telling portrayals of an Irish upbringing and schooling\, the Catholic Church and its priesthood\, Parnell and Irish politics\, encounters with the conflicting roles of art and morality (problems that would follow Joyce throughout his life)\, sexual experimentation and its aftermath\, and the decision to leave Ireland. \nRich in details that offer vital insights into Joyce’s art\, this masterpiece of semiautobiographical fiction remains essential reading in any program of study in modern literature.

SUMMARY:Pysanky: Learn the Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the spring at Monmouth University with this unique opportunity to learn the seasonal ancient art known as Pysanky. Pysanky\, also known as Ukrainian eggs\, is an ancient folk tradition that has been passed down for thousands of years. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come. This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky\, a demonstration\, and independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs\, dyes\, and tools. Participants will turn real eggs into works of art using a wax resist method similar to batik. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg\, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off. In-person attendance will be extremely limited. \nNo prerequisite skills are required. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. Ages 18+

SUMMARY:Comedic Improv with Michael O'Keeffe
DESCRIPTION:Location: Pollak Gallery\n\nComedic improvisation is the true playground of the theatre! Students gain confidence while acquiring skills that allow them to create scenes and stories using nothing but their imaginations and each other – all completely on-the-spot! \n\nThere are some fascinating opposites inherent in improvisation: \n\n• In order to look good you must make others look good. \n• In order to be safe you must take risks. \n• To be self reliant you must trust others. \nTo be able to succeed you must be willing to fail good-naturedly.\n\nWe will explore these concepts along with others\, including teamwork\, focus\, concentration\, mistakes as gifts\, relaxation\, being changed\, listening/observing\, re-incorporation\, comedic timing\, etc.\, etc.\, etc… \n\nWe will be doing structured exercises and games (just like “Whose Line is it Anyway?”)  as a whole group as well as in pairs and trios. We will work on going with our first idea while supporting our partner’s ideas. We will practice trusting our instincts and taking risks in a safe\, fun and playful atmosphere.

SUMMARY:Tristan und Isolde
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this Metropolitan Opera event will start at 12pm. \nAfter years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives at Pollak Theatre on March 21 as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Market.

SUMMARY:Taylor Jenkins Reed\, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! This week’s book is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reed. \nTaylor Jenkins Reid is the New York Times bestselling author of Carrie Soto Is Back\, Malibu Rising\, Daisy Jones & The Six\, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo\, as well as four other novels. Her next novel\, Atmosphere\, will be published in June 2025. She lives in Los Angeles. \nAging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job\, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her\, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography\, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment\, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s\, and\, of course\, the seven husbands along the way\, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition\, unexpected friendship\, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star\, but as Evelyn’s story nears its conclusion\, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen – Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman
DESCRIPTION:Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her.  Her radical images showed them as intellectual\, curious and engaging. This was a major shift in the way women appeared in art. \nMARY CASSATT: PAINTING THE MODERN WOMAN follows the progression of Cassatt’s work\, her meticulous study of the Old Masters and traditional techniques while also exposing her frustration at not finding a style that truly expressed her desire to be modern until she discovered the Impressionists. \nThis film tells a riveting tale of great social and cultural change at a time when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was being completely re-written. \nMary Cassatt and her modern women were at the heart of it all. \nProfessor Kenneth Womack will offer pre-film commentary about Cassatt’s groundbreaking Modern Woman project. After the screening\, he will lead a discussion about the film and Cassatt’s enduring artistry. He will also be on hand to sign copies of The Time Diaries\, his novel about Cassatt’s relationship with fellow impressionist Edgar Degas. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at cost for $20.

SUMMARY:Play On!
DESCRIPTION:This is the hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty authoress who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show\, Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal\, and the final act is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does.
