DESCRIPTION:Reception: Monday\, April 11 | 4:30- 6 PM | Library Seminar Room 102\nGallery Hours: Tues. – Thurs.: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\, Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.\, Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\, Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Jacob Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He had over sixty one-person shows and was the recipient of many awards\, including Tiffany\, Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants. Many of his works are featured in permanent collections in the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, among others. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nJacob Landau viewed art as a defense against chaos. That all is subject to entropy haunted the artist his whole life. So art becomes a weapon to combat this descent into disorder. And it is a powerful weapon. For “each time we create something\,” Landau has said\, “we win a victory over decay.” Monmouth University’s exhibit “Order & Chaos” demonstrates this triumph. The exhibition features a selection of fifteen pieces. All works are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Jewish Culture Studies Program and the Honors School of Monmouth University. \nThis event is free & open to the public. SUMMARY:J. Seward Johnson Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Following an early career as a painter\, Seward Johnson turned his talents to the medium of sculpture. Since then\, more than 450 of Johnson’s life-size cast bronze figures have been featured in private collections and museums in the United States\, Canada\, Europe and Asia\, as well as prominent places in the public realm such as Rockefeller Center\, Pacific Place\, Hong Kong\, Les Halles in Paris\, and Via Condotti in Rome. Seward Johnson is most widely known for his sculptures depicting people engaged in every day activities. Johnson’s desire to highlight the mundane in his Celebrating the Familiar sculpture series has brought a unique voice to the world of art in public spaces. \nJohnson is often recognized for his most dramatic work — and also his largest — the 70’ aluminum giant entitled The Awakening. This sculpture was selected for the International Sculpture Conference & Exhibition and is currently sited along the Potomac River at National Harbor in Washington\, DC. This work was profiled in LIFE magazine\, Time Magazine and has become a “must see” destination in the nation’s capitol. In recent years\, Seward Johnson’s monumental scale sculptures have captured the attention of the international media and a global audience. Among these are the 26 foot tall Forever Marilyn with her skirt blowing upwards defying the stainless steel and aluminum materials. SUMMARY:GUERRILLA GIRLS ON TOUR: Act Like A Feminist Artist
DESCRIPTION:Aphra Behn shares her experiences as a feminist activist and artist for almost 20 years as a member of Guerrilla Girls (1997-2001) and Guerrilla Girl On Tour! (2001 – present). Revealing the inside workings of the grassroots groups\, she discusses the successes (protests; fax blitzes; speak-outs and street theatre); the struggles (hate mail; death threats; backlash) and the downright defeats (sabotage; infighting). Act Like a Feminist Artist 
is a 60 to 90 minute interactive talk\, audience members will be challenged to rethink the concepts of what it means to be an “activist\,” “artist\,” and “feminist.” The talk is framed with readings from Aphra’s upcoming memoir\, “UN/MASKED\, My Secret Identity Revealed” (Skyhorse Publications\, October 2016.) A lively Q and A will follow the talk.

Together they will be joined by local and national talent including Arlan Feiles\, Kate Taylor\, Bruce Gassman\, Emily Grove\, Remember Jones\, Stringbean\, Yuri Turchyn\, Sonny Kenn\, Ashley McKinley\, Matt Wade\, Puggy DeRosa\, Fred Scribner and More!  Recreating not only the music but the celebration\, camaraderie and talent that took over the stage November 25 back in 1976. \nThe Band’s style of writing and music has influenced so many artists\, bands and songwriters\, from the Grateful Dead and The Beatles to Elvis Costello and Pink Floyd to our own local artists\, throughout the years and continue to do so. DESCRIPTION:Please note this event is SOLD OUT. \nThe Friends of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection\, along with Monmouth University Center for the Arts and Backstreets.com announce a special event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of The River and the forthcoming release of The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set. \nThe event will include a special guest appearance by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny who will be introducing the film\, as well as a big-screen preview presentation of Zimny’s new documentary The Ties That Bind\, which focuses on the making of Bruce Springsteen’s fifth album\, The River. The film contains rare photos and period concert footage\, as well as commentary and solo acoustic guitar performances from Bruce. As an added bonus\, Thom will also present a special one hour big-screen preview cut of the new Zimny-edited concert film Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour\, Tempe 1980. Both films will be included in the forthcoming box-set The Ties That Bind: The River Collection\, which will be released worldwide on December 4\, 2015. \nA Celebration of Bruce Springsteen’s The River\, The Ties That Bind Preview Screening will mark the New Jersey premiere of New Jersey native Thom Zimny’s The Ties That Bind documentary\, as well as a unique extended preview of the Zimny-edited Tempe 1980 film. Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey\, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles\, features 45 iconic images of Bruce Springsteen. The exhibit serves to document a great American music legend\, and will feature photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch\, Ed Gallucci\, Eric Meola\, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko will be on view in the Rechnitz Gallery before the film. \nAll proceeds from the film screening will benefit The Bruce Springsteen Special Collection at Monmouth University.

He has been a Norman Mailer fellow and a visiting scholar at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas\, Austin. His essays and criticism have appeared in Vogue\, The Nation\, Boston Globe\, and have been broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered. His next novel\, Eastman Was Here\, is forthcoming from Viking/Penguin in 2016. He is the Artist-in-Residence at Monmouth University where he teaches creative writing.

The exhibit serves to document a great American music legend\, and will feature photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch\, Ed Gallucci\, Eric Meola\, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko. \n“Our goal with this exhibition is to define the career of Bruce Springsteen in an entirely new light\, as captured by these five incredible photographers\,” said GRAMMY Museum executive director Bob Santelli. “Each of these photographers was able to artfully document Bruce’s world\, at different stages in his career. We are honored to partner with each of them in order to help tell the story of one of the most important figures in American music.” \nBruce Springsteen’s recording career spans more than forty years\, beginning with 1973’s Columbia Records release Greetings from Asbury Park\, NJ. He has released 18 studio albums\, garnered 20 GRAMMY Awards\, won an Oscar\, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, was a 2009 recipient of Kennedy Center Honors and was named 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year by The Recording Academy. Springsteen’s newest album High Hopes (Columbia) was released on January 14\, 2014. \nWhile the majority of the exhibit focuses on Springsteen off-stage\, four additional live performance photographs\, shot by Barry Schneier\, will be showcased. These photos were shot during the now famous Springsteen concert at Harvard Square Theater where famed Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau claimed\, “I have seen the future of rock and roll\, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” \nAdditionally\, the exhibit will feature video interviews with each of the photographers\, produced by the GRAMMY Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Urinetown March 4 – 8; March 10 – 12\, 2015Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nFrom an American town in the early 20th century\, we flash forward to a future dystopia where a severe water shortage has made public pay-per-use toilets a legal necessity. Urinetown was a hit Broadway musical in the early 21st century\, running for two and a half years. It won Tony Awards for its composer and lyricists Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis and Mr. Kotis also won for the book of the musical.  The show is a satirical take on social change (the police are represented by Officers Lockstock and Barrel)\, corporate greed (the pay toilets are run by “Urine Good Company”)\, and Broadway musicals themselves. One of the show’s characters – its hero Bobby Strong – was included as one of the 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre.

DESCRIPTION:There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being the voice of America’s conscience\, and even fewer who continue to make vital music. For six decades Mavis Staples has been the solid rock of American music. Alongside the family group she is so identified with\, the Staple Singers\, Mavis has managed to transform herself as she goes\, yet never alter.  \nFrom the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s (“Uncloudy Day”)\, to the engaged protest of the civil rights era (“Freedom Highway”)\, and then\, amazingly\, on pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (“I’ll Take You There\,” “Respect Yourself\,” “Lets Do It Again”)–through all these\, Mavis carried on\, her warm embrace of a voice the only constant. On their second collaboration\, the Grammy-nominated 2013 album “One True Vine\,” the legendary singer and her producer\, Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy\, have crafted a gospel album for the 21st century. On the record\, Mavis gives voice to something new in her repertoire\, something deeper and more resonant with our times.  Where her Stax-era hits spoke for a growing black social consciousness\, and her seventies collaborations with The Band gave spiritual weight to the rediscovery of traditional American music\, Jeff Tweedy has crafted a pulpit from which Mavis lends her voice to a search for grace. Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer\, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner\, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient.  VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll\, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.  Her previous album\, the Tweedy-produced “You Are Not Alone\,” won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2011\, adding a remarkable new chapter to an already historic career. \nOpening for Staples is a songwriter and performer who represents an exciting new voice in millennial music — in addition to being the Jersey Shore music scene’s most acclaimed breakout artist in a generation. Nicole Atkins grabbed the industry’s attention several seasons back with her major-label debut album Neptune City\, a nationwide TV commercial for American Express\, and a musicologist’s dexterity that found her sharing stages comfortably and confidently with everyone from Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds to Monmouth professor Marc Muller’s Dead On Live project. Having reaffirmed her indie roots with her latest release Slow Phaser\, Atkins is creating some strong and innovative new music — and she’ll be sharing it\, along with the expected surprise interpretations of her many and varied influences\, in a solo acoustic setting on the Pollak stage.

DESCRIPTION:A former member of the\nSouthern rock outfit Drive by Truckers\, Jason Isbell’s solo career has seemed\neffortless\, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit\n(2009)\, through Here We Rest (2011) and last year’s Live From Alabama. He writes\nopen -hearted songs full of storm and drama\, bursting with personal truths\, and\nechoing with the southern sound of his Alabama upbringing. Embracing his\nnewfound sobriety\, Isbell next produced an album of haunting atonement and\nredemption\, the sparse and impressive Southeastern\, which was a critical\nsuccess and commercial breakthrough.

DESCRIPTION:February 1 – February 28\nPollak Gallery\nOpening Reception: February 4\, from 6-8 pm (includes a performance by the du-wop group the Tee-Tones)\nLecture: February 11 from 7-8:30 pm in Pollak Theatre by Charlie and Pam Horner\nGallery Hours: Mon – Fri 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and select weekends \nLong before Asbury Park became known for rock music\, the city’s African American community rocked on Springwood Avenue.  Between 1910 and 1970\, the city’s West Side pioneered the sounds of jazz\, gospel and rhythm & blues.  This exhibit explores\, chronicles and highlights Asbury Park’s black music scene from Count Basie to Billy Brown\, through an impressive collection of rare photos and memorabilia.
