DESCRIPTION:Vietnam is a country in transition.  Intrigued by the rapid transformation of Vietnam\, one of the fastest growing economies of the world Monmouth University professors\, Mark Ludak and Andrew Cohen have returned multiple times to photograph this region.  A dynamic\, youthful country\, especially seen in mega-cities like Ho Chi Minh City (Sai Gon)\, it is a country where the traditional and contemporary are reconstituted into distinctively Vietnamese manifestations.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (Broadcast Live in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter\, The Woman in Black)\, Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral\, The Witness for the Prosecution) star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny situation comedy\, broadcast live from The Old Vic theatre in London. David Leveaux’s new production marks the 50th anniversary of the play that made a young Tom Stoppard’s name overnight. Against the backdrop of Hamlet\, two hapless minor characters\, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern\, take centre stage.  As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama\, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds.

SUMMARY:You’re A Good Man\, Charlie Brown
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 6/23: 2pm & 8pm;  6/24: 2pm & 8pm;  6/25: 3pm;  6/30: 2pm & 8pm;  7/1: 2pm & 8pm; 7/2: 3pm \nShadow Lawn Stage\, the professional theatre of Monmouth University\, will present the 50th anniversary production of the enchanting musical\, You’re A Good Man\, Charlie Brown this June with 10 performances at the historic Woods Theatre on the university’s campus. Based on the famed comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles Schulz\, the musical tells the story of some typical days in the life of Charlie Brown. From running after the school bus to spying the cute little red-haired girl at lunch\, Charlie deals with the fun and frustrations of life with his friends Lucy\, Linus and Schroeder; his kid sister Sally; and his faithful companion\, Snoopy. The original production featured Gary Burghoff (Radar in the MASH series). The 1999 revival won 2 Tony Awards – for Roger Bart as Snoopy and Kristen Chenoweth as Sally –  and the Drama Desk award for “Best Revival of a Musical”. \nThe songs of the show\, written by Clark Gesner\, reveal the dreams and goals of the characters: Lucy explores her feelings for Schroeder while he plays Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” (“it’s always been my dream that I’d marry a man that plays the piano”); Linus sings and dances with his security blanket in “My Blanket and Me”\, and even Snoopy sings the praises of his favorite time of day in “Suppertime!”  For the revival\, Andrew Lippa added a new song that had Sally searching for “A New Philosophy” (is it “Why are you telling me?” or “I can’t stand it!”?)  As the day comes to a close\, the whole gang reflects on the things that bring them “Happiness”.Directed by Maurice J. Moran\, the Shadow Lawn production features a range of actors: professional members of Actors’ Equity Association\, MU students and alumni\, and new rising stars.

SUMMARY:Bolshoi Ballet: A Hero of our Time - Live in HD
DESCRIPTION:Pechorin\, a young officer\, embarks on a journey across the majestic mountains of the Caucasus\, on a path set by his passionate encounters. Disillusioned and careless\, he inflicts pain upon himself and the women around him…\n \n“Give me everything\, it is still not enough.” The story based on the larger-than-life hero Pechorin is adapted from Mikhail Lermontov’s literary masterpiece in three separate stories recounting his heartbreaking betrayals. Is Pechorin a real hero? Or is he a man like any other? This brand new production by choreographer Yuri Possokhov is a tragic poetic journey that can only be seen at the Bolshoi. \n“I saw Bolshoi years ago at Lincoln Center. The only time I was reminded that I wasn’t in the theater live was when the theater in Moscow applauded and we didn’t. I was tempted many times.” \nRun time 2:45

SUMMARY:SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE POOR FOOLS
DESCRIPTION:Playing a wide range of music from Dylan\, Mose Allison\, Muddy Waters\, NRBQ\, Richard Thompson\, Emmylou Harris\, The Band\, George Jones and more\, The Poor Fools also dive into some of the Southside’s Asbury Jukes material–revisiting some classics as well as the underperformed deep tracks. “The Poor Fools tour is a chance for me to try out different material and some Jukes standards in an acoustic-ish form. In this incarnation\, musicians such as Jeff Kazee\, John Conte\, John Putnam\, Neal “The Dude” Pawley and I will all be singing\, playing\, and having some fun on stage. It will be a loose mix of songs\, stories and banter between the musicians and–hopefully–the audience. With Lyon shaking up each night’s setlist for himself and his gang of multi-instrumentalist band members\, these troubadours ride the rails of the runaway train known as Southside Johnny and The Poor Fools. \nThere will be a meet and greet for Gold Circle ticketholders at 6:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Laughing With Me! - Improv workshops with Michael O’Keefe (Adults 18 & up)
DESCRIPTION:Laughing With Me! is the ASD program that is filled with fast-paced\, interactive fun!! Students think of communication issues like a game!! They will become flexible within these experiences. The outcome being that now they won’t break\, but simply bend. They also learn that it’s OK to fail. It’s simply a part of life that’s ultimately not a big deal. Also\, a common occurrence of the program is an understanding of a special kind of laughter that gives a boost to self-confidence and creates a feeling of camaraderie. This is called “earned laughter”\, because the students realize that they have done something funny on purpose\, in a setting that promotes and encourages that behavior. Delve into the ASD workshop where we look at how we handle what comes our way – expected or not! Add in the great fun and team spirit built into our games. We’ll be playing with both our strengths and our quirks.\n\nMike O’Keeffe is a teaching artist with The Count Basie Theatre\, and has been performing and teaching improv comedy professionally for over 25 years. He received his M.A. in Education from Monmouth University in 1996\, and has been a public school teacher for 20 years. He has done regional improv touring shows with former troupe-mate Wayne Brady\, and has traveled across the country performing corporate comedy and team-building. Recently\, he presented a TED Talk on the concept of “Play” called “Using Improv to Become a Better Human”. He is an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University\, where he teaches Critical Discourse. This spring\, he was a keynote speaker at the National Youth Leadership Council’s\, “More Powerful Together” conference in Washington DC\, which brought together educational leaders and future educators. He was a speaker at Princeton University this summer\, where he demonstrated how to integrate performing arts into their Common Core Curricula.\n\nFree but registration is required.

SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald. \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. Most died in battle. \n“… The Mitzvah is an important piece of cultural discourse as well as a marvelous piece of theater… by a gifted and versatile playwright and performer.”\n– Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel\, Chabad of Port Washington

SUMMARY:Walnut Street Theatre’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers
DESCRIPTION:America in the 1960s\, an era that encouraged LOVE\, was populated by “Mad Men” and “Mod Women” trying to navigate the new normal. In this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s classic\, Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, true comedy ensues when a modern man in the hip sixties looks for something new and different\, but ends up finding himself in the same situation\, again and again…and again! \nBarney Cashman is middle-aged\, married\, overworked and overweight. It’s finally his turn to join the sexual revolution… before it’s too late. With no experience in covert maneuvers\, he arranges three attempted trysts. His targets; a bawdy bundle of fun who likes smooth whiskey and other women’s husbands\, a young actress too kooky for words\, and a neurotic housewife who happens to be married to his best friend. And through all the mishaps and laughter\, Barney begins to rediscover his humanity and what he thought was missing all along.\nLast of the Red Hot Lovers had a lengthy run on Broadway and was made into a hit film starring Alan Arkin and Sally Kellerman. \nWalnut Street Theatre\, America’s Oldest Theatre\, celebrated 200 years of great entertainment in 2009. Most noteworthy American actors of the 19th century and many from the 20th century have appeared on stage at the Walnut. Some of the Walnut’s shining stars include: Edwin Forrest\, Edwin Booth\, the Drews\, the Barrymores\, George M. Cohan\, Will Rogers\, The Marx Brothers\, Helen Hayes\, Henry Fonda\, Katharine Hepburn\, Marlon Brando\, Jessica Tandy\, Ethel Waters\, Audrey Hepburn\, Sidney Poitier\, Lauren Bacall\, George C. Scott\, Jane Fonda\, Robert Redford\, Julie Harris\, Jack Lemon\, and William Shatner. \nThe theatre has been home to many pre-Broadway try-outs of plays that would go on to become American classics\, such as A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marlon Brando\, A Raisin in the Sun featuring Sydney Poitier\, The Diary of Anne Frank featuring Susan Strasberg\, Mister Roberts\, starring Henry Fonda\, and Neil Simon’s first Broadway play\, Come Blow Your Horn. \nThe Walnut began its most recent incarnation as a self-producing\, non-profit regional theatre when Bernard Havard took the helm in 1982\, founding the Walnut Street Theatre Company with a vision of once again creating theatre in a space that is so steeped in the American theatre’s traditions and history. Today\, you can experience the realization of that dream when you attend a live performance. With over 56\,000 subscribers annually\, Walnut Street Theatre is the most subscribed theatre company in the world. But he is far more than that. He has a mellow and compassionate understanding of how weak and essentially well meaning mankind behaves…a genuinely brilliant play.”- New York Post

SUMMARY:Drones by Karina Aguilera Skvirsky
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Feb. 2\, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in  Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Friday\, Feb. 2\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nDrones are in the news. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions.
