SUMMARY:Alumni Speaker Series: "Lunch and Learn" with Becca Baier ’12
DESCRIPTION:From Self-Doubt to Self-Assurance: Navigating Your Career with Confidence\nWhat happens when you want to apply for a job or internship and that voice in your head tells you that’s totally nuts and you don’t have the experience or qualifications? \nAnd then\, if you somehow magically land the role\, how do you “fake it til you make it” in a place you’re worried you’ll be found out? \nAlmost 4 years ago\, Becca made the transition from a higher education professional to the corporate world\, and these were some of the many thoughts she had along the way. Whether you’re thinking about entering the workforce for the first time\, changing career fields\, or just struggling with self-doubt\, this is the workshop for you! \nAbout the Speaker\nA proud Monmouth Hawk\, Baier has a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Higher Education Student Personnel. She went to Ole Miss for grad school\, and during her eight years working in higher education\, she worked at Rider University and Rutgers-New Brunswick. In January 2022\, Baier made the career leap to corporate\, where she now works at Paramount Global in Human Resources. After her first year and a half\, she made a jump within Paramount to a new team and continues to experience that thing we can’t seem to avoid in life—change! \nOutside of work\, Baier is the founder and director of The Celebrate Life Foundation\, a NJ 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, and is a certified life and career coach. She loves spending time with her family and friends\, lives on the beach (right by campus!)\, and has a knack for organizing and color-coding.

SUMMARY:La Bohème
DESCRIPTION:With its enchanting setting and spellbinding score\, the world’s most popular opera is as timeless as it is heartbreaking. Franco Zeffirelli’s picture-perfect production brings 19th century Paris to the Met stage as Puccini’s young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life. Soprano Juliana Grigoryan is the feeble seamstress Mimì\, opposite tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the ardent poet Rodolfo. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts the November 8 performance\, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to the Pollak Theatre.

SUMMARY:La Sonnambula
DESCRIPTION:Following triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette\, Verdi’s La Traviata\, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor\, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina\, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production\, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina’s fiancé\, Elvino\, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival\, Lisa\, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works\, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to Pollak Theatre on October 18. \n\nDue to wet ground conditions\, there will be no parking on the Pollack/Great Lawnfield tomorrow. Please park in the soccer fields or identify yourself to the football parking assistants as performing art patrons\, and the fee will be waived. \nThank you\, and enjoy the show!

SUMMARY:Salome
DESCRIPTION:Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy\, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth\, one of Europe’s leading opera directors\, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive\, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine\, who demands the head of Jochanaan\, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather\, King Herod\, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife\, Herodias\, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series\, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

SUMMARY:Hernan Diaz\, Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is Hernan Diaz’s Trust. \nWINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION\nA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER \nEven through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s\, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together\, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds\, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit. \nHernan Diaz’s TRUST elegantly puts these competing narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction. The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Jean Rhys\, Wide Sargasso Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack. This month’s novel is Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea. \nWide Sargasso Sea\, a masterpiece of modern fiction\, was Jean Rhys’s return to the literary center stage. She had a startling early career and was known for her extraordinary prose and haunting women characters. With Wide Sargasso Sea\, her last and best-selling novel\, she ingeniously brings into light one of fiction’s most fascinating characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. This mesmerizing work introduces us to Antoinette Cosway\, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Mr. Rochester. Rhys portrays Cosway amidst a society so driven by hatred\, so skewed in its sexual relations\, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.
