This one-semester requirement forms part of the General Education curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ms-rteFontFace-3 ms-rteFontSize-2 ms-rteThemeForeColor-5-5\">Monmouth currently offers courses in eight World Languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL). With these courses, students can fulfill the one-semester language requirement, and if they choose, continue to higher study in the language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ms-rteFontFace-3 ms-rteFontSize-2 ms-rteThemeForeColor-5-5\">Students will need to complete a brief World Language Placement Survey and (possibly) a World Language Placement Test before they can register for their course. <\/span><span class=\"ms-rteFontFace-3 ms-rteFontSize-2 ms-rteThemeForeColor-5-5\">Monmouth offers placement testing for most languages to ensure that students take the correct class for their level.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>World Languages at Monmouth University\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ms-rteFontFace-3 ms-rteFontSize-2 ms-rteThemeForeColor-5-5\">At Monmouth University, we have a shared vision that guides our General Education curriculum, one that exposes\u00a0our students\u00a0to various areas of\u00a0academic engagement\u00a0and experience. Students at Monmouth\u00a0must be\u00a0prepared\u00a0to work within\u00a0the realities of global systems\u00a0at home and\u00a0abroad, such that\u00a0cultural\u00a0competence\u00a0and global awareness\u00a0are essential components of\u00a0their\u00a0academic journey. To be marketable, competitive, and truly well rounded, it is necessary for students to expand\u00a0their\u00a0study beyond English-only classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ms-rteFontFace-3 ms-rteFontSize-2 ms-rteThemeForeColor-5-5\">Monmouth University provides courses that promote cultural, literary, and linguistic competence in a language other than English\u2014including American Sign Language\u2014while enhancing students\u2019 soft skills such as critical and creative thinking. At the university level, students experience their language study in an authentic, collaborative, and immersive dynamic within and beyond the classroom.
