About the Program<\/h2>\n\n\n

The Information Technology Minor provides students with essential proficiencies to help maximize their technological fluency. In addition to exposing students to hands-on development work in essential tools that include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, students in the IT Minor also explore coding through HTML, CSS, Visual Studio and Javascript, work with Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop, learn about project management and the software development lifecycle, and gain sensitivity to the social and ethical ramifications of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry Meets Education<\/h2>\n\n\n

This spring, students in IT-150 have the unique opportunity to get some real-world experience while creating and expanding their on-line portfolios. Mat Weisfeld, adjunct Information Technology professor and MU alumnus, has invited small businesses to partner with his students to create, update or re-brand their websites. Recently, these students had the opportunity to showcase their technological skills, in a client-facing scenario, with 2 organizations: VPI Industries and CILU, Citizens for Informed Land Use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VPI Industries, a high-end audio manufacturer, met with Weisfeld\u2019s IT-150 students to discuss the music industry, manufacturing, marketing, sales and how they relate to course material.\u00a0 Sales Director, Bill Poteet, \u201cVPI is happy to be involved in all educational opportunities that inspire the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Students also had the chance to help CILU Board Representatives redesign their website, while utilizing the skills taught in IT-150, including advertising, graphics, web design\/development, and database management.\u00a0 CILU will meet and decide which website design they will implement later this year.\u00a0 Mat Weisfeld commented, \u201cIt was an educational and eye-opening experience to see the presentations became a constructive forum of ideas between the students and the CILU Board representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>
