{"id":3428,"date":"2026-09-01T15:19:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T19:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/department-of-communication\/?page_id=3428"},"modified":"2026-09-01T15:30:35","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T19:30:35","slug":"minor-in-science-fiction-fantasy-and-horror-filmmaking","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/department-of-communication\/programs-of-study\/minor-in-science-fiction-fantasy-and-horror-filmmaking\/","title":{"rendered":"Minor in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Filmmaking"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"about-the-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Peter Pan to Batman, Stranger Things to Japanese Anime, Freddy Krueger and Lord of the Rings, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Filmmaking have been an integral force in the history of cinema and popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This first-of-its-kind program in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Filmmaking gives students hands-on, professional experience creating their own unique works in these pioneering genres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open to all Monmouth University students, no matter your major\u2014no previous experience in filmmaking required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"core-courses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Core Courses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intro to Video Production (or equivalent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screenwriting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Filmmaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Topics in Genre Film<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-in-page\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/catalog.monmouth.edu\/undergraduate-catalog\/wayne-d-mcmurray-humanities-social-sciences\/communication\/science-fiction-fantasy-horror-filmmaking-minor\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\">View Curriculum &amp; Sequence Charts<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"undergraduate-research-amp-internships\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Undergraduate Research &amp; Internships<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students can strengthen their filmmaking and screenwriting abilities by participating in the Film Club, Monmouth\u2019s student-run filmmaking organization. Film Club allows students to gain experience in every level of production, including their own fully realized original scripts and short films. Students assume all leadership responsibilities, from the screenwriting and pre-production to directing, cinematography, production design, editing, and VFX.
